Josh Smith trade rumors: Phoenix Suns reportedly pursuing Atlanta Hawks forward

The Phoenix Suns are the latest team that is reportedly exploring trade options with the Atlanta Hawks for forward Josh Smith.

USA TODAY Sports

The Phoenix Suns are actively pursuing Atlanta Hawks forward Josh Smith according to a report by Hoopsworld.com's Alex Kennedy. The Suns are interested in prying Smith from the Hawks prior to the trade deadline or are interested in participating in sign and trade discussions during the offseason.

Any trade involving Smith is unlikely to bring back a lot of salary unless Danny Ferry sees it as an opportunity to acquire a player that can be a part of Atlanta's future going forward. Phoenix has a nice collection of assets and a deal could be centered around center Marcin Gortat. The Suns also have a collection of expiring contracts and control several first-round picks.

Gortat is under contract through the 2014 season at around just over $7 million dollars. He is averaging 11.6 points and 9.0 rebounds a game this season. His presence would allow the Hawks to theoretically slide Al Horford to the power forward position. If the Suns were to offer Gortat in addition to expiring contracts and a draft pick for Smith would Danny Ferry bite?

There is no mention in the article of Smith's trade kicker so its unclear how that might affect negotiations. Nothing appears to be imminent but as the Rudy Gay trade showed, these things can develop quickly and the Suns are a team worth playing attention to.
