The Atlanta Hawks have announced a sign-and-trade deal with the Clippers that will send Willie Green to Los Angeles. In exchange Atlanta will receive the rights to Sofoklis Schortsanitis. The Hawks also will get a trade exception out of the deal.
Schortsanitis was drafted with the 34th pick of the 2003 draft by the Clippers. He is 27 years old and is listed at 6-foot-10, 345 pounds. Schortsanitis played this season with Panathinaikos and previously has played with Olympiacos, Maccabi Tel Aviv as well as the Greek National team.
The gem of this deal is turning a free agent like Willie Green into a trade exception that can be used in a later deal. The move once again gives general manager Danny Ferry more flexibility down the road which is something that he has been focused on since taking the job.
Green enjoyed a career year for the Hawks in 2012 finishing with averages of 7.6 points and 1.5 rebounds on 47 percent shooting.
