Even though we might have been dreaming about another coach it was a long shot that Larry Drew wouldn't be brought back for the final year of his deal. The Hawks made it official on Friday when they exercised the option in Drew's contract for next season.
Rick Sund on Larry Drew via official team release:
"Larry did an outstanding job this season in guiding our team to the fourth-best record in the Eastern Conference, despite a condensed schedule and unfortunate injuries," said Sund. "The Hawks have reached the postseason in each of his years on the bench, and we feel Larry's experience, expertise and dedication to the game were a key ingredient to our success."
This is the first domino to fall into place for the Hawks this offseason as Sund's status as general manager is still apparently not decided. The move to extend Drew's contract seems a little odd considering nothing is known about Sund as of yet. The move seems to suggest that Sund will also return for next season or someone already within the organization would likely take over as GM.
