Jeff Teague, Hawks can't reach agreement on contract extension

Atlanta Hawks point guard Jeff Teague was one of the players who did not receive a contract extension by last week's deadline.

While players like Jrue Holiday and Ty Lawson were signing contract extensions last week, Hawks point guard Jeff Teague was left waiting and will now head into the offseason with an uncertain future. Both sides discussed an extension but ultimately an agreement couldn't be reached.

HOOPSWORLD's Lang Greene caught up with Teague before Friday's season opener with the Rockets to talk about the contract situation:

"I mean we tried but you know it didn't work out. [The numbers] didn't match up. But you know it's a little more motivation to go out there and try to prove to them that I deserve the things I was looking for and try to make the best of it."

Hawks general manager Danny Ferry has worked hard to clear up the team's salary situation for next season. Atlanta is now in position to be a major player in next season's free agent market. Atlanta seems content to let Teague set his market for next season with his play this year.

Teague will be a restricted free agent during the offseason giving the Hawks the ability to match any offer a team makes. It is a move that could end up costing Atlanta more in the long run should Teague further improve his game this season. However, at this point, it looks like it is a gamble that Ferry and the Hawks are willing to take.
