So a lot of the discussion on comments has become monotonous regarding either tanking/acquiring talent or offseason moves. Now that we mostly know what our roster will be, I would imagine that some predictions will be made in the months ahead. For now, I invite the scouts in each of us to identify the players that you would like to see the Hawks target in the next 12 months. Of course, I think any of us would take Lebron/Durant, but I am going to break it into 2 categories which I think are more reasonable:
1) The Jason Kidd category: Which established non-star veteran would improve our team without saddling our cap room and possibly help us acquire a star in the future?
For me, I would like to see us make a move for Granger or Afflalo. Neither are the star we are missing, but they are 2-way players at wing that we desperately need and who seem to be valued by other NBA players. I am not sure we have the right assets to get Granger from a Pacers team that is all-in to win now, but that would be my first choice. If Shroeder shows a lot of promise early on, I could see flipping Teague for Afflalo and getting a similar player in talent level and cost but who is of a greater need for our roster. Who interests you?
2) The Billups category: What player on a rookie contract is undervalued and may become much better than currently projected?
I am a huge fan of Derrick Williams and think Wolves have completely mishandled him. I think he has star-potential--not that he will become one--but potential is there. He is still young and showed improvement from rookie season to last year and Wolves have seemed to build their future plan without considering him as a major factor. I think he is the type of player who struggles being a role player. He likes the pressure of being a star which is rare. Most like the attention of being a star, but not the pressure. The question is if he has the skill to become that type of player. I just think he is worth a risk. My second choice would be Dion Waiters. I think he will be sixth man of the year down the road and most recent champs/finalists have a Waiters-type as 3rd or 4th best player. I love Lou but not sure he is best fit for that role into the future.
Just some thoughts for the day and a poll for the other 2011 lottery disappointments behind Derrick Williams...
