With the current logjam of NBA teams and affiliates, brought on by the 1 to 1 relationships that have been formed, it seems like discussions about the addition of more D League teams will start to pick up. Having more teams and a 1 to 1 affiliate for the Hawks would allow us to really develop young players without having to send them overseas. We could then keep a close eye on them and monitor not only their on court development, but also their physical and emotional development as they become pros.
As far as where to expand, if you look at this map of current affiliates, it is apparent that there is a glaring hole in the southeast. Several teams could be added in this region, as well as in other parts of the country to create a true minor league system with 1 to 1 affiliates.
If there was a Hawks D League team that played in the Gwinnett Arena I feel that it would draw pretty good crowds and would be very close to the current Hawks facility. This would also make it easy for fans of the parent club to keep an eye on the potential next crop of stars (or role players, whatever).
I don't know what the economics behind this type of massive undertaking would be, but I'm sure Adam Silver can figure it out. What do you guys think about D League expansion?
