Atlanta Hawks still facing decision at point guard

Debby Wong-USA TODAY Sports

Atlanta's made two deals at the trade deadline and now have a full 15-man roster but could still be forced into making a roster move because they are extremely thin at the point guard position.

The Atlanta Hawks made a pair of deadline deals on Thursday sending out Anthony Morrow to Dallas in exchange for Dahntay Jones and acquired center Jeremy Tyler from the Golden State Warriors for a second-round pick. The moves give the Hawks a full 15-man roster but also leaves the team terribly thin at the point guard position.

Atlanta was discussing it's point guard situation prior to the All-Star break after Jannero Pargo's second 10-day contract expired. The Hawks elected to wait until after the trade deadline before addressing the situation. Now its unclear how they may add another guard.

Atlanta played on Wednesday with Jeff Teague and Devin Harris as the only true point guards on the roster. Harris has battled injury the entire season and it may be foolish to expect him to remain healthy for the remainder of the season. Rookie John Jenkins is the emergency option at the point but Larry Drew would likely be reluctant to throw him into a big spot.

Hawks head coach Larry Drew discussed the situation prior to Wednesday's game:

"We've already had dialogue and conversation about our [point guard] situation if nothing changes," Drew said. "Certainly we have to keep an eye on Devin [Harris] with a sore foot, but this is something we've already discussed prior to going into the All-Star break. We made a decision to revisit our situation if nothing changes when the deadline passes. So that's something we'll sit down as a staff and discuss."

Hawks' general manager Danny Ferry also indicated on Thursday that there was still decisions that have to be made on the current roster and Atlanta's point guard position.
