im just shocked
they actually pulled the trigger
Ivan Johnson does not buy ground beef, he just takes a whole cow, runs it through his beard, and fully cooked hamburgers come out.
HOLY CRAP
just in time for Dwight

If you want someone who is 6'11 to stand in peoples way you found him.
Been a big Mavericks fan for years and Erica was worthless when they signed him and I am sure he is worse now. He might get some rebounds but don’t expect anything else.
We don't. Just needed a big body.

He should eat up a bit of space in the paint at least, although it sounds like that hasn't been all he''s been eating
Ivan Johnson - the new Xavier McDaniel
might get rebounds?
he’s already better than collins

If the might holds up.
Have to see if he can make it under the basket before the other team shoots. Then maybe.
The Hawks are over the tax line,
Do the bite the bullet, or are we going to see some salary shedding coming soon?

whut
seriously, what’s wrong with Keith Benson? its like this organization is scared to hire young players.
well
he’s a big. he’s cheap. he’s fast. he’s not 37 y/o. he had a pretty outstanding college career (albeit, the summit league). he could stand to gain about 20lbs but it’s practical to say that he could achieve that. i never saw any kind of press release as to why he got waived in the first place. as much as i’d like to think there was a legitimate reason, its Larry Drew and Rick Sund we’re talking about here.
and its not so much that i’m in love with Benson, as much as i’d rather see us develop a young player who’s hungry as opposed to someone like dampier who, lets face it, should probably be put out to pasture. infact, i’m pretty sure that was his plan before this contract. i will say that while i didnt watch or attend the preseason games, i did go to the preseason scrimmage and he seemed like he had hustle, length and actually had a decent stroke on his shot.
ive always felt like ASG is just after a quick buck, and this is just another decision i feel has nothing to do with building this team.
also
it looks like he’s leading his d-league team in rebounds now that steimsma got picked up by the C’s.
Question
Do you think Bensen is better than Hilton Armstrong?
Why could Hilton Armstrong not make it?
hmmmm
i think hilton was very athletic for his size but didnt really seem like he had a strong b-ball IQ and just overall never impressed me, but then i never watched him in washington and he played such limited time in atlanta. did he get waived or did he just sign overseas during the lockout? i can’t remember. anyways, i think the possibility of Benson turning into an effective player, moreso than hilton, is reasonable. barring some hardcore genetic limitations, guys can usually bulk up if they put in the work.
Have you seen how slight his shoulders and frame are?
I don’t think Benson’s ever bulking up. He just doesn’t look like that type. See John Henson at North Carolina, or Jarvis Varnado formerly of Mississippi St. Those guys have tried bulking up for years, and are still beanpoles. I’d assume Benson has tried to get thicker over his 4 yr college career. It didn’t work, did it? He’s 23. Your frame usually is what it is by then.
http://sportsandgrits.com/
I'd argue that he doenst need to bulk up
you dont need to be bulky in the NBA to be a good frontcourt. Having good footwork and using your superior length and athleticism to your advantage is more important than size.
Pure size, agreed
but with size comes strength. And as physical as it gets in NBA paints, having the strength to hold your position matters.
http://sportsandgrits.com/
ok Thanks for entertaining that question
I wondered when we drafted Bensen about Hilton. They seemed to have similar builds. And we last I saw Hilton vs. muscleman, I was screaming for him to be removed.
But drafting in low second round, one really can not expect much more than a project, unless one hits the jackpot. I feel like we hit the jackpot with Ivan though
Bias against young players is kind of standard in the NBA
Not saying it’s right, just that it is common. In our case I think it shows how the team sees itself. They don’t see themselves as having time to learn on the job. Our only rookie is a 27 year old beast. The other rookie we had on the team was only used as a victory cigar while Hinrich was out and then they released him. The team is worried about the now not the future. Dampier should know more about being an NBA roadblock in the paint than Benson will likely ever learn. As much as I hope Benson finds his way into the league someday I don’t think he would have fared well fighting Howard and Bynum for position in the next week +.
i can agree with that
benson would get abused by bynum or howard, but considering his price, i’d keep him on but not as my starter. let him bulk up and get minutes against other teams who are struggling in size. i mean the guy is athletic. just like benson doesnt have the roadblock mentality, dampier certainly doesnt have the athleticism.
They should have never let Benson go
Benson is a project, who should have been kept on this team in place of Stackhouse. He would not be of immediate help, but could learn.
Dampier is the type of player Hawks need if they are to contend. Of-course the jury is out whether he has any juices left. But at this point, surely it can’t be much worse than Collins. We need a bigger body center, and he fits the bill
I agree 100%
With this.
We need Dampier NOW. Benson is loads better long-term as a project, but we don’t need a project now…
GATA!
There is a reason that Benson
was cut from his foreign team and didn’t latch on with anyone else after being cut in training camp. I understand the upside thing but still.
@Kris_Willis
+Kris Willis
facebook.com/krisawillis
And a lot of his supposed upside
is attached to a weight gain that his frame and age imply he’ll never actually be able to gain.

Bench fodder
Michael Cunningham @ajchawks
Erick Dampier looks to be pushing 300 pds. Larry Drew: “He’s not in best of shape. Still, his size is presence in middle.”
I hope he never plays meaningful minutes during his 10 game stay
pushing 300 lbs. And he's a veteran. Give me Mikki Moore. He has that Junkyard Dawg look and mentality.

If the early feedback is right about Dampier's shape
Then I think you got something with Mikki Moore. He’s been in the D League and is probably in much better game shape

Not cool at all.
Maybe he got the call by surprise and figured he was retired.
It’s Mark West all over again.

It's 10 days, until Twin gets healthy
doesn’t seem like he sticks any longer than that. And even if Twin is out over 20 days, I’d assume they sign another big to a 10 day deal instead of signing Dampier to enough he becomes guaranteed.
http://sportsandgrits.com/
Good point...
I’m not excited by a fat, out-of-shape, aging Dampier…
(Read the above statement however you wish.)
GATA!
True, that is important to stress
He is playing for his future or the Hawks will move on to the next 10-day deal

Basketball-ref
has him having madae near $100m over his career.
http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/d/dampier01.html
I doubt he’s playing “for his future”, maybe just one last shot to stay in the game, or to play for a champion (if he’s auditioning for Miami or someone else). If his career has more than next year, if that, I’d be shocked. But he is probably better able to give something and adapt to the system immediately thanks to his experience than a new kid would. So for 10 days, he’s our best bet. If he proves healthy and able to help, wonderful, if not, we got more than we would from a Benson, etc, who we could always just sign 10 days from now, or next summer.
http://sportsandgrits.com/
I certainly doubt he is playing for his next meal
but yeah by agreeing to the deal I am guessing that he would like to hang on a little longer.
You do know that they were discussing bringing someone in on a 10-day with the possibility of it being for the full season. Not saying it will be Damp but it is still possible if he performs.

Would that not put them over the tax?
If so, that seems shocking for ASG to pay the tax. Especially considering if they were, wouldn’t they try to do so for a better player? Maybe they go for Wilson Chandler on their MLE once he’s done in China.
Or maybe they plan on a salary dump for a draft pick or two with Hinrich or Marvin.
http://sportsandgrits.com/
never mind I see what you say below
and agree that it makes a potential Kirk deal more likely. Maybe to the Lakers for their trade exception and a 1st round pick or two (I say two since being a Lakers #1, it’s in the 20s and not worth much).
http://sportsandgrits.com/
Murph dog baby. But tbh I have to say Kirk ran the PG better than Teague. Teague needs to take notes.

Is Stern talking about the Hawks?
"They’ve committed to pay the luxury tax, which not many teams in our league do these days," Stern said. "They are committed to hire the personnel to demonstrate to the fans that this is a franchise worth supporting. I think they are committed to Atlanta, and I’m committed to them."
http://www.ajc.com/sports/atlanta-hawks/stern-hawks-owners-way-1339203.html
I think he was in town to talk bout them trading for Howard to be annoused after the All-Star game.
He wanted to make sure they could afford him an go over the luxury tax……. lol Im hoping anyways…
by SmokedTooMuch013 on Feb 9, 2012 3:15 PM EST up reply actions
Fact is they are in the luxury tax right now
and as MC pointed out yesterday even if they get just under, playoff incentives could push them back over. That is probably where the Chris Sheridan rumor about them looking to shed payroll came from.
Depending on how they play up until the trade deadline it may be interesting whether or not they try to offload Kirk’s salary or someone else just to get under the tax line. According to what MC said yesterday if they stand pat with what they have now then they are going to pay.

keeping stack
is just mind boggling – honestly, if we shed salary instead of trading because it makes the team better in the short and long term. I’m going to look back at keeping Stack with great disdain.

You have to remember that ASG left all the overhead including Joes contract to Meruelo.
Now they are just trying to hold the fort down until another Meruelo resurfaces.
Isnt that the guy who couldnt pass the credit check to buy the Hawks?
They should ask Ted Turner to buy them back.

Sell the team to Ted Turner!
I’ve been saying that for the longest…
