Is Atlanta A Bad Sports City?
I don't know if any of you saw the bit on 11Alive after the Super Bowl. They addressed the national media's perception that Atlanta is a "Bad Sports Town". But they offered some nice feedback on why we may be perceived this way. Here are some bullet points for what they had to saw.
- Attendance rankings: Falcons 15th/32, Braves 15/30, Hawks 22/30, Thrashers 28/30
- 156 seasons/ 1 Championship
- The teams haven't been in the city as long as say New York or Boston so the fan base doesn't go back very far
- If you think the last 10 years how many the teams in New York and Boston have won championships compared to the last 50 years for Atlanta teams: New York 3 championships from 2002-2012, Boston 6 championships from 2002-2012, Atlanta 1 championship from 1962-2012

don't care. Management has to win something. - 156 seasons/ 1 Championship.
Could you imagine if LA lost that often? Murder rates would go up severely.

imo Atlanta is a GREAT sports town, considering the facts.
From a basketball perspective I’ve seen their is a handful of players you can win a title with.
Recently the trend has been
star wing + Twin Towers (PF +C). This core has gotten beaten up so bad on the boards until last year.
Hawks management wants to play small ball then they will get beat up in the playoffs.
Need tougher lineups and better fitting pieces. But again, imo Atlanta is a GREAT sports town, considering the facts. Imagine if the Hawks won a title.
Can you say ’’Hawknik’’?

I think success is the main culprit. We haven't had a whole lot to cheer about but
division championships. If we had the success of say Boston I think our fan base for our sports teams would be one of the largest. I say this because we can draw from Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The casual fan wants to support a winner. For us who live and die with our team it doesn’t matter, but for those who occasionally watch games they only know or follow the teams if they are generating a lot of buzz. You don’t get buzz unless you are winning and winning big.

Well
New York has a big traveling fanbase despite winning much at all. And with Jeremy Lin playing well for 4 games he’s the talk of the nation. There are a lot of sports fans in the south, just not many NBA fans for whatever reason.
Atlanta will win a championship....someday
Answere is easy
atlanta is a new city with a lot of transplants. most of those people brought their team with them instead of adapt to a new home town. of these people that moved here and started families, some of the offspring adapted to their parents favorite team, which is common. and a lot of the offspring started liking atl sports teams. time will change this, and success will speed the process up. but with atlantas popuilation booming we are going to be a mixed population of sports fans, they call it a melting pot or something.

Atlanta isn't a new city
It is a transplant city meaning home grown Atlantians leave and people from everywhere come here. Early failures is probably causing generational distain for the hawks, not to mention our inconsistent play over the past few years.
Atlanta will win a championship....someday
They haven't been to inconsistent.
We say that, but they have made it to the second round of the playoffs the past 3 years and pushed the Bulls to 6 games. I’d call that some sort of consistency. Sure during the regular season when they get drilled by the Suns and then come back to beat the Pacers and Magic seems inconsistent, but that happens in the NBA.

oh if that's the case
we’re a consistent second round and out team, the Wizards are a consistent losing team, Josh Smith is consistent at never making an all-star team, etc. Maybe I should have said, we’re not progressive.
Atlanta will win a championship....someday
progression
as in we’ve seen other teams win the finals and Chicago, whom two years ago we used to dominate, have gotten further than we have the four years we’ve been to the playoffs?
Atlanta will win a championship....someday
I'm not trying to be negative here
I’m giving reasons why people here aren’t showing up in droves to see the hawks play and why even most long time hawk fans won’t go to the games.
Atlanta will win a championship....someday
Josh Smith asked for a big man shooter and got Vlad Radmanovic. Still starting the slow PF who you can hide even Steve Kerr's defense on in Marvin Williams.
Seems like mediocrity.

or a recipe for it. Hawks just do not match up well against good basketball teams.

You could have included these sentences in your last reply to post
You don’t have to reply to yourself all the time. You can include everything in one post every time. Just a suggestion. I’m not trying to be a playa hata, I’m just saying.

I live in PA, right in between Pittsburgh, Philly, Baltimore, DC and NY
Atlanta has a long way to go. They need less focus on amateur sports (college and High School), and put their attention on their pro teams.

It's crazy
because I think there’s a lot of pressure for amateur atheletes and their coaches to perform. But unlike where you’re from there isn’t pro sports towns right next to each other.
Atlanta will win a championship....someday
A slight problem with that
is that Atlanta is in the Heart of SEC conference in football and ACC for basketball. With the fanbase those two conference command alone, it’s practicually like the pro teams are facing 32 other teams, 31 pro + 1 conference fanbase.
I guess with your facts, it’s mediocre

It's pretty simple, at least to me...
I did not see the news story, but as a 40yo native Atlantan, two facts immediately jump out.
1) As someone else said earlier, Atlanta is now a city of transplants, many of whom bring their own team favorites with them. We probably won’t grow a new base of purely Atlanta fans for another generation..maybe sooner if one of the pro-teams develops a consistent playoff-winning culture.
2) For those of us who HAVE been die-hard Atlanta fans for decades…many of us are starting to become jaded. If you remember the few good years for the Braves and Falcons in the late 70s-early 80s, and the Hawks’ run throughout the latter 80s…you also remember the inevitable defeats/meltdowns either right before or during the first/second rounds of the playoffs. I’m not even going to talk about the Flames and the Chiefs. Hell, even Tech sucked for years until relatively recently.
Then take the Braves’ 90s – 00s run…with that one championship. Looking at all that, it is easy to get to the point where you say, “do I REALLY want to spend money on season tickets for another disappointment?” “Can I REALLY talk trash with people rooting for other (winning) teams?”
I think there are a lot of Atlanta fans out there, but we’ve learned the hard way not to hope to much or talk too loudly!

29 teams face disappointment every year. Not being able to sell out Turner Field for a playoff game and telling our fans to actually get to the stadium early is a disappointment. More tickets sold means a higher payroll, it’s like complaining about the president when you haven’t even voted. Bad sports town. Fact.
