Please trade Kirk for a big man and save LD from himself

Excluding the last 8 minutes of the first quarter, the Hawks outscored the Bulls 72-61.

In that 8 minute stretch, the Bulls outscored the Hawks 29-6. Out of that 23 point swing, 14 of those points came after LD brought in the subs, and even though the Hawks were getting killed on the glass up to that point, none of the subs was a big man.

11 minutes for Vlad at PF, 2:43 combined for the only backup big men on the team, Ivan and Dampier.

Oh yeah, and Pargo once again proved that he is fully capable of handling the backup point guard role on this team.

TRADE KIRK FOR A BIG MAN

I think LD gravitates towards jump shooting type players

In a way, even the changes in Smoove’s game started with LD.

LD likes classic guards, who stop and pop and take jump shots from outside. Certainly he is not against facilitation, but I believe, he wants all his players to be able to make shots from outside.

You can see this even with treatment he gives Ivan vs. Rad. While Ivan would make a better sub for Zaza or Smoove, he will instead go to Rad. It is what he is comfortable with. To him everything else, defense and driving to basket are secondary. He may pay lip service to them, but, in his heart, he is a jump shot first kind of guy. It is who he is, he can’t change his stripes. It is why he is more comfortable with Kirk. As long as LD is coach, Teague will become marginalized as is happening, and Kirk and to some extent Green and Pargo will get higher billing.

The chemistry of this team changed when Kirk came back. Some people may think I am being negative towards Kirk, that is not the case. Kirk is just taking minutes from everyone who were playing well together.

I am with you with getting size, it seems like some people still think this team we have has enough size. I vehemently disagree

by ATLpaul on Feb 20, 2012 7:51 PM EST up reply actions

It's not so much size as it is mentality

I really think LD thinks Vlad can do big man things (like rebounding and post defense) just because he’s 6’11". It doesn’t work that way.

I’d gladly take someone like 6’7" DeJuan Blair. Being a big man is more about the way you play, not height and weight necessarily. The Hawks need players who will mix it up inside, rebound, defend the post, block shots, etc. I’m not that picky about how tall of a big man the Hawks get in return for Kirk, but they need to trade him for a big man. They have plenty of perimeter players and swingmen, but their only two healthy big men are Ivan and Dampier and LD won’t play either one of them.

Please stop with that. Vlad is 6'9 or 6'10 at best with baby arms.

Dejuan Blair is 270+ pounds and is cut with 7’2" length. Its on draftexpress. Last time I checked the same length as Amare and McGrady. Thats size.

No one thinks we have enough size

we just don’t think that size for size sake is the team’s problem. I absolutely think size matters – I don’t think that it’s the cause of all the ills of our team. Bring Al back and you’ll have more size and still not cure the issues this team has in contending for a title. I think we need a coach more than we need size. And yes, I have already made my point a while ago that I thought that Kirk was tradeable – absolutely think that’s necessary, but I just don’t want it to be for just size. I want it to be for talent, possibly a draft pick that you can use on a big man.

So, I don’t think anyone is anti-size. I think we just don’t buy into that being the only ill for this team. I believe that the fact that we have an entire rent-a-bench is also a bigger long term issue. You can’t get chemistry out of a bench that is all free agents save Zaza. So, there are lots of issues for this team and you highlighted some of them – size matters, but when Teague and Joe and Josh are all mediocre and your best player is Pargo and you lose by 9 – it’s not just size that loses the game.

LD

what the fukc?

We get blown out on the boards with Josh and Zaza getting 10 apiece, the rest of team only 7. The answer is to play Willie Green and Hinrich and go zone?

As much as it hurts to say this, As long as this team is built with Josh Smith avoiding the SF position the Hawks deserve to continue to get raped versus the elite teams.
- Smith standing under the basket piling up fouls
- Smith posting up taller stronger PF/Cs
- Smith and Zaza’s futility slaving away for offensive rebounds while the SF is really a nonphysical guard

We would have won this game with Josh vs Deng instead of the dumb crap we do. Josh vs Boozer and Noah. Joe Johnson vs Deng. Where Deng used his superior length to take Joe out of the game.

I have no idea whats going on. Initially LD said Smith would be the SF last year but then he loses weight and becomes more of a SF. What he pulled with JJ at the 3, a position he does not like. And then benching him…over Hinrich? This is looking like an imploding failure of an organization.

Because

He is feeling pressured to make some kind of change, and unfortunately he doesn’t know the right ones to make based on match ups so he just put in the guy who had a good shooting night the previous game. Ld shouldn’t be coaching in high school, yet he is our nba head man. Also unfortunate is that the pressure he is feeling is coming from the losses and not from the brass, his job, regretfully, is likely secure.
I feel like most anyone who blogs on this site could do a much better job with this organization from top to bottom. There is more sound basketball logic passed around in any 100 comments here than there has been in ASGs existence.
Its tough, but one day things will be better. One day josh won’t be the only freaking player on the team going for a lose ball while atleast 2 others sit by and watch…i almost screamed in the middle of class when I saw that happen again today (i watched most of the game online).
One day…if I win the lottery, we will run the hawks!

Atlanta Hawks are the most mind numbingly idiotic franchise I've ever been a fan of.

Instead of Josh Smith at the wing they male the team mind numbingly unathletic.

Lost Marvin Williams today and instead of getting an opportunity to go big. Get a physical rebounder in there to help do dirty work and moving Josh Smith to run and gun on the wing … They go with 6’4 Willie Green/Joe Johnson and let Smith play the Pf/c.

Every ufcking game fans pay and come out to expect Josh Smith to do something athletic or exciting but they tell him to crash boards and do the grunt work vs Boozer and Noah, so Willie Green Joe Johnson and a broke down Kirk Hinrich can get out & run?

Only time Smith can run on the break is if the other PF or C falls down or Smith grabs the board and leads a break. Obviously Struggles to post up size and we have the GALL to ISOLATE him against Taj Gibson and Boozer. WHen we had Luol Deng doing jumping jacks against him last year.

I’m glad Hawks lost today. LD has no clue and needs to get his sh*t together with Smith and Joe at the wings or be fired. The Small Forward is the glue of the team. The only chance we had today was Smith at SF doing the dirty work vs Deng. And we went with Joe Johnson vs Deng. Then benched Mr.$120 million.

COMPLETE misuse of players today. I dont care anymore. I’m glad Hawks lost today. They want to keep putting players in position to fail and being jerkoffs to Joe and Josh, keep playing them a position down. Go right ahead. See if any Free Agent ever comes to this hellhole of an organization again.

Lets play our “run and jump” help defender DIRECTLY under the basket.

So he has EXACTLY ZERO chance to come and help against Rose and has to take charges and fouls, Effectively becoming as effective as Zaza Pachulia.

ESPN kept saying how we want to get out and run

But we really don’t. We want to grind the game to a halt because our half court offense is so great. We have been wasting athleticism for years. Its called the highlight factory but I really can’t remember a highlight this season. This team was more exciting when we were losing every night.

Run with who? The PF (the"4") and C(the “5”) go back and get the boards. The PG(the “1”)so who’s running the wings?

Here’s the wings I saw today.

McGrady, Marvin
Joe Johnson, Willie Green, Hinrich

Joke of an organization that falls into stereotypes! that just because your athletic you can play small ball. You REBOUND and then those who DONT run. 1st grade basketball.

In response to comments made by Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol after Sunday night’s game against the Phoenix Suns, Mitch Kupchak issued the following statement:

"As a former player, I understand how the days leading up to the trade deadline can be nerve-wracking for an NBA player," said Kupchak. “Nonetheless, as General Manager of the Lakers, I have a responsibility to ownership, our fans and the players on this team to actively pursue opportunities to improve the team for this season and seasons to come. To say publicly that we would not do this would serve no purpose and put us at a competitive disadvantage. Taking such a course of action at this time would be a disservice to ownership, the team and our many fans.”

that pic was bigger than I thought it was. Either way this loss goes all the way to the top. Dampier signed again for what? How many minutes did he play.

Ivan a PF should shift Smith to SF and make us tougher. But plays center minutes or none at all.

And Gearon has been on record saying he hates adding a center to Smith because it moves him away from the basket… What???

Thats the point numbnuts. Derrick Rose can drive right by our weak wings and guards, drive into Smith and get him 5 fouls. Instead of him coming off the wing to help and alter shots with his wing athleticism.

Same old same old

When I look at the Bulls, I see what we could be. A fluid group of players with notable weakness (save for Rose, it’s hard to find a weakness in his game) that mask them with depth and accountability. When Boozer or Noah have bad games, Thibs will bench them in favor of Gibson and/or Asik and have them play out the 4th quarter. LD is way too loyal to Josh (not saying he should be benched in the 4th since Vlad/Ivan and Damp scare me) and his jumpshooting ways. He’s a great defensive player but he could be so much better given some harsh treatment.

LD’s distrust of young PG’s is frustrating in that we are still going through growing pains with Teague. He will usually go with Kirk and Pargo if peeved about Jeff, even going as far as playing Pargo alongside Hinrich today (horrible idea if you ask me). Teague had 22 minutes while Pargo had 26 and Kirk had 30. Even in borderline blowout like this one, I want to see Teague on the floor to iron out some issues. Pargo and Kirk aren’t the ones in our longterm plans.

The Bulls stuck with D Rose though he like all young PGs had growing pains, they formed a stoic defensive identity with less than great athletes (save for Rose) and have jumped from a .500 team to a championship contender in less than two years. With this group and lack of an identity and accountablility will never be better than a second round flameout.

Atlanta sports have singlehandedly crushed my soul.

by Beachy Keen on Feb 20, 2012 10:19 PM EST reply actions

No Josh Smith has clear weaknesses. He cant post up size.

We will never be the Bulls because they pursue size at the PF and C and play their well rounded rebounding 6’8 player at the SF.

Josh Smith is 6’8. He’s supposed to be Boozer or Noah?

edit: video evidence – 7 years into his career and Hawks organization and fans just dont get it.

Chicago has a capable backup froncourt unlike us, but the real issue is having accountability and discipline. Last night Thibs called a timeout and yelled at his lax defense for giving up a layup to Zaza. They were up 19 at the time

That me and PointGuardSlim actually agree on something is scaring me

Lets get something straight, Josh Smith right now, is the best PF in the East, at the same time one has to ask. Why didnt the Hawks go big this game? Especially with Marvin Williams out, combined with Josh Smith Blistering Luol Deng in the playoffs last year you would have thought LD would go big to combat the Bulls superior length. Its like he watched the tape of Portland game and decided that Rebounding WASNT THE BIGGEST ISSUE. So he plays a three guard lineup that includes three guards who are neither great defenders or rebounders

Now apparently Joe Johnson has a knee injury. Why is he playing then, +/- really shouldnt be used this way but Joe Johnson was a -20, At HalfTime. The Hawks made their runs when he wasnt in the game. Jeff Teague wasnt great again, but i feel if he didnt play alongside Joe JOhnson he’d probably would have had a better game too. If Joe is hurt he shouldnt play. Hes hurting more than he’s helping right now.

Larry Brown Plays Corliss Williamson Plays at SF in the NBA Finals
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfTSHowZLds

Coach Drew speaks of having "interchangeable" pieces on this team, and this leads off into the discussion of possibly playing Josh Smith at the small forward position at times.

"He has the ability to erase a lot of defensive mistakes because of his athleticism. I won’t match him up against a lightning-quick guy where he would have to defend multiple screens. But he certainly will be able to play some 3. At the same time, he can be a tough matchup at the 3 as well. You play him at some 3, there is a high probability he is bigger than that three man, stronger than that three man. Certainly the way to take advantage of that matchup is to post him up. We will certainly try to utilize his ability against a smaller guy. It won’t necessarily be about us adjusting to what the other team does. We want to put the opponent in a position where they have to match up with us." – Larry Drew

What the fcck happened? That was Smith at 250 lbs. He lost 30 lbs and we still seing this crap. Luol deng was too “lightning quick” today?

I've got an idea

Starting five: kirk, stackhouse, mcgrady, horford, dampier.
Well be called the geriatric five…well I guess that doesn’t work for horford
How about the brittle basketiers?
We may as well have some entertainment value, id laugh my ass off to see that. Play all of them 40 minutes and the image you get is dampier and stackhouse dragging along their oxygen tanks, horford using his one good arm to shoot that corner pick and roll shot, and mcgrady complaining that he is getting too much playing time.
P.s…this is a joke to those of you who take things literally, I never want to see this lineup…unless we can mix the past with the present, all those players in their prime sans pargo would actually be a formidable squad.
