Detroit gave the Miami Heat a scare Wednesday night falling 101-98. Key players Charlie Villanueva, Will Bynum, Ben Gordon and Tayshaun Prince all missed the game for the Pistons. Prince was out with a family matter and his status for Friday's game against Atlanta is unknown. Austin Daye picked up a lot of the slack scoring a career-high 28 points against the Heat.

Atlanta won three of the four matchups last season against the Pistons. Josh Smith averaged 23 points and 9.5 rebounds per game in those games. Friday's game will be Atlanta's third on its current five-game road trip. The Hawks split the first two games winning in Milwaukee and falling in San Antonio on Wednesday.

Hey Peachtree Pimps!
I wrote tonight’s game preview over at DBB and discussed a strategy for rebuilding the Hawks. Just curious about your take on these points:

1. Amnesty Joe Johnson this summer.
2. Trade Kirk Hinrich’s expiring for a shooting guard to replace Johnson before the March 15th deadline. (Hinrich could request a waiver and return to Atlanta before the playoffs)
3. Trade Josh Smith on or before draft day for a top 4 pick, aiming for Andre Drummond
4. Move Horford to PF, where he might be more comfortable and productive
5. Start 2012-13 with a core of Teague, Horford and Drummond

I mentioned in my preview (with my homer glasses on) that one option for Atlanta would be to send out Hinrich’s expiring for Ben Gordon, if the interest is replacing the current production of Johnson on the cheap. If given the same burn and attempts, Gordon gets roughly 90% of the numbers of Johnson at 33% of the price. Thing is though, I’d look elsewhere first if I was Atlanta. Gordon is 6’3", and he and Teague would make for a tiny backcourt. Anyway, just sharing my thoughts. Am I insane? Let a brother know. Just be gentle, I’m fragile.

Good luck tonight. I predict that the Hawks will stomp my Pistons, because my Pistons— they suck.

Wow. That's a whole lot of work!

I like the forward thinking, but there is no way they will gut that much.

I love getting Al to the PF, but if they keep Al and trade Josh, the fans will riot (for some reason).

Mainly because Josh Smith is more valuable than Al, in my opinion of course

We can survive without Al, but I think we would be a mediocre team if the tables were turned and we had lost Josh and not Al

I don't know if we'd get a #4 pick for Josh Smith in a strong draft

We weren’t able to get the #2 pick in a weak draft for him over the summer.

I don’t know if we’d get a #4 pick for Josh Smith in a strong draft

I originally had this idea as Detroit and Atlanta playing trade partners. My thought was that only Anthony Davis matches up well with Greg Monroe, and if Detroit can’t nab him we could trade the pick to bring in the right pairing for Monroe. My first thought was Josh Smith, as his above-the-rim, shot-blocky, big D style would be the ideal complement.

If I was Detroit’s GM, I’d consider moving our first round pick + either Maxiell or Villanueva for Smith and Atlanta’s first rounder.

by Mike Payne on Jan 27, 2012 6:35 PM EST up reply actions

With the way the ASG work their transactions, I don't know if they'd worry so much about improving for the future

Case in point – Your #1 point on your post about the Hawks rebuilding. You get the feeling the Hawks ownership aren’t so worried about building for the future as much as the present (a possible by-product of them looking to off-load the team).

Ivan Johnson - the new Xavier McDaniel

by Nique Fan on Jan 27, 2012 6:43 PM EST up reply actions

Wishful thinking but that won't fly around these parts.

First of all, your scenario has to many wheels for this ownership and management to digest. Over the past 5 or 6 years, the Hawks have made marginal changes to the roster each year. This offseason was the busiest we’ve seen around these parts since they stripped the roster in 2004.

Then, Josh Smith is having a really good year without Al Horford. So if he continues that, he becomes even more important to the Hawks future and less of a liability. So if the Hawks didn’t trade him last year, he won’t get traded before next year’s trade deadline when he would be in the last year of his contract.

Joe Johnson isn’t getting amnestied anytime soon. Marvin Williams would be the prime target for an amnesty if the Hawks felt the urge to do it. And again, Williams is playing really good now and probably has killed the amnesty talks for now.

The Hawks don’t want Ben Gordan. That was your squads bad signing.

And the Hawks team is too strong to blow up this year. If there are roster shakeups in the Hawks future, it would after next season when Josh would be looking for an extension or set to be a restricted free agent in Summer 2013.

by jdewayneatl on Jan 27, 2012 6:47 PM EST up reply actions

Josh would be looking for an extension or set to be a restricted free agent in Summer 2013.

Josh Smith is an unrestricted free agent in 2013.

Josh Smith is having a really good year without Al Horford.

Which is precisely why you should seek to get the most value out of him while you can.

Joe Johnson isn’t getting amnestied anytime soon. Marvin Williams would be the prime target for an amnesty

This is entirely baffling. The Hawks will be paying a 34-year-old Joe Johnson $25M in 2015/16 when he’s barely worth a 3rd of that amount today. $107M in cap-clogging salary hell, and the Hawks would amnesty Williams? I don’t mean to knock Joe Johnson and I don’t want to offend anyone here, I’m just amazed at the Hawks’ management.

by Mike Payne on Jan 27, 2012 7:26 PM EST up reply actions

Thanks for the correction. I meant unrestricted.

The contract is always the starting point when talking about Joe, but his play this season shows why he is so important to the Hawks at this stage. And the Hawks owners are definitely not gonna amnesty Joe if they still have to pay him whether he is in a Hawks uniform or not.

by jdewayneatl on Jan 27, 2012 7:38 PM EST up reply actions

Just to let you know

The Hawks never offered that to Minn

by Jonesy24 on Jan 27, 2012 11:35 PM EST up reply actions

ASG will not Amnesty JJ

They’re too cheap to be stuck paying his contract while he’s not playing, and still filling out a roster. And Rick Sund isn’t going to admit he made a mistake with that move.

Braves will be fine. I'm not worried.

by Bronn on Sep 18, 2011 4:26 PM EDT

by Bronn on Jan 27, 2012 7:31 PM EST up reply actions

That sucks. With the way the amnesty system works, the sooner the better it’d be for the Hawks payroll. The worst-record teams get a chance to bid on the player first, and I could absolutely see Cleveland and Minnesota raising the rates quite a bit (since they both sorely need a versatile veteran wing). The more the post-amnesty teams spend on that player, the less the organization has to continue to pay.

by Mike Payne on Jan 27, 2012 7:36 PM EST up reply actions

Is it just me, or is anyone else enamoured with Greg Monroe's game?

Maybe it’s because he has a similar game to Al,with a greater post presence.

No doubt. Detroit isn’t even rebuilding yet. We still have to get out of our horrible contracts before we can begin to rebuild. Sadly, Detroit has the worst GM in the league right now, and the new owner seems to be pretty invested in him…

Darko I forgive

Charlie V’s contract and Ben Gordon’s contract are unforgivable.

Darko is a classic example of how a coach can undermine a young player. Was he a bad pick given who went after him? Sure, but I credit Larry Brown with trying to pound the square peg into a round hole and setting him back years.

The Hawks have a good chance of landing Kenyon Martin for the vet minimum.

Kenyon’s targets are Atl, Miami, San Antonio, NY, and LA Clips. He wants a sizeable role on a contending team. While NY and LA can offer 2.5 mini-midlevel, NY isn’t a contender right now and Atlanta can offer a larger role than LA, Miami,or San Antonio.

Like I said, Pachulia’s a good bench big…..when he went to the bench and came back he played a lil better. It’s like the bench revived him…he found an old friend. I guess you didn’t see how Zaza was getting abused earlier and then Collins came in and the game was managable. But then again everyone here has selective viewing.

As a Georgia Tech student who saw Iman Shumpert in person for 3 years, I was completely shocked by the Knick picking him in the first round. Yes he’s athletic and can defend, but his ball handling and shooting are atrocious. He shouldn’t be near a starting lineup at this point

Joe announces he’s willing to renegotiate his contract to get a player like Howard..

Yea

They couldn’t have picked a better team. I love watching George Karl coach

Knicks bought into the superstar hype. Gallinari = Carmelo in a lot of ways IMO. Gave up too much to a "rookie" GM. funny.

I like Karl too

when he was having his contract squabble with the Nuggets a few years ago I was dreaming that he might end up in Atlanta.

I liked what he said when talking about the superstars joining up on one team. He said that wasn’t likely to happen in Denver so they tried to get a top 10 player at each position and combine that with a top 10 bench. So far it is working for them.

They are a well run organization

A smart, young GM
a great coach
players who look like they have fun playing with each other

That is what stands out the most

That is one thing about this Hawks team that I didn’t notice last season. They seem like they are having fun playing together. Last year we fold at the end of the fourth in this one I feel.

True

I like to watch players reactions on the court after a foul or dunk etc. They all seem invested into each other. When Josh commits a foul, T-Mac complains to the refs. When Zaza falls someone runs over to help him. It’s nice to see

Speaking of Harrington

He and Linas Kleiza just almost came to blows. Harrington looked like he picked up Rudy Fernandez and threw him at Kleiza

I was on a flight with him once, a few years back

A row back of him and across the aisle, so I was just eavesdropping on his conversation, but he was fascinating to listen to. Fun to watch him breaking down tape, too.

From the AJC blogs:
DID ANYONE ELSE SEE LAWRENCE FRANK AND JSMOOVE STARING DOWN EACH OTHER IN THE 2ND HALF? IT WAS A BREAK IN PLAY AND THEY WERE ICE GRILLING EACH OTHER – Grandmaster Jeje

Don’t know if its true but there was a break in the play (free throws I think) where Smith and Frank were both trying to work over a ref.

I just thought to myself “Josh does more coaching/coaxing the refs than Larry Drew” it was surreal.

I saw that but I didnt' think they were staring at each other

Looked like to me they were both complaining to the ref or Smoove was just listening to what Frank was saying.

New Orleans frontcourt is gonna kill us I just know it. Carl Landry a real "Power" Forward and Okafor a solid C. Hope he dont drop 20 and 20 and hope we win. We'll see.

lack of guard play. Any team with solid bigs give us trouble in the paint and keeping Smith out of the paint.

Not expecting a cakewalks in New Orleans.

Best players according to Win Shares Per 48.
Carl Landry
Jarrett Jack
Emeka Okafor

Watch out for Gustavo Ayon too. Mix of Scola and Al. Plays smart backdoor cuts and doesnt miss,

nothing more sobering than watching SportsCenter waiting for Hawks highlights

Joe’s shot to tie the game doesn’t make top plays but 3 separate Miami dunks do. Never actually saw Hawks highlights. Sad.

A bit of coverage from MC at ajc

This was similar to the Milwaukee game: Awful start, great finish. "I wish it could be a little earlier," Josh Smith said. "I would rather have the lead than try to claw back into it and do it the way we did it. But a win is a win. I’ll take it."

The Hawks did it behind Joe Johnson’s 28 points after halftime. There are times when Johnson doesn’t have it and focuses on drawing doubles and swinging the ball. This time, he just kept doing his thing until he found his rhythm.

"The second half I just wanted to be aggressive," he said. "It was do or die. We had to put up or shut up. Guys came out and made big plays and gave ourselves a chance in overtime. I just wanted to validate that and be aggressive and make plays not only for myself but my teammates."

Marvin came off the bench and made the big 3-pointer but Drew sent him in for defense. "I wanted to get more active defensively and they were scoring with posting [Greg] Monroe," Drew said. "We were going to double team him and getting into rotations, and I wanted someone a little more mobile out there."

Marvin played 35 minutes and delivered with his best game in a while: season-high 22 points on nine shots and eight rebounds.

More evidence of Atlanta’s lack of depth in the front court: Monroe, Jason Maxiell and even Austin Daye gave the Hawks problems in the paint. There were times the Hawks cross-matched Josh on Monroe and Twin on Maxiell. That’s just not a good situation.

It would be sadly ironic if Chris Kaman has better health than Bogut going forward in his NBA career.

BEATING A DEAD ASS HORSE ....

WE may win the game tomorrow but we gotta have an inside big…zAzA is AWESOME (coming off the bench) Twin actually is a space eater but I believe what he contributes on offense actually benefits the OPPOSITION (missed layups, three second violations, etc)…we have valuable trade pieces but at the same time, I believe when Al returns the new C will be good enough to allow him to move to pf(thus the title)…..
Kaman would be nice but not for the alleged asking price…get a third team involved? maybe….btw….2 irrelevant questions……THINK WE SHOULD LOOK INTO BRIAN COOK?(saw him and his massive ears on the knicks bench)
WHATEVER became of SOLOMON JONES?(just curious)
