Preview:
This game figures to provide a big challenge for the Hawks to match up with the Sixers' bench brigade of Louis Williams, Thaddeus Young and Evan Turner. All three come off the bench and all three are averaging double figures in points. Williams leads the team with 15.7 points per off the bench.
Spencer Hawes who is averaging 10.4 points and 8.8 rebounds for the Sixers is questionable with a strained Achilles. He sat out Wednesday's loss to Denver. Entering tonight's game Philadelphia is No. 3 in the league in scoring at 101.0 points per game and is also the league's second best defensive team at 87.4.

It’s a tricky question because the answer to the question retired as a Hawk, but didn’t play here very long
Actually he did play for the Hawks
So I think the way they asked, it could be the answer. But the guy before him retired as a Hawk with the Career title
It was Maurice Cheeks
Gus Williams retired as a Hawk at #2 because it looks like Maurice Cheeks passed him right at the end. When Mo retired in 93 he was #1 and then was overtaken by John Stockton a few years later.
Forgot the tie-in to the opponent which should of told me it wasn’t Gus.

He played all of his minutes with the starters
Sometimes +/- is deceptive. At least, in the small scale (over the length of the season, I think it’s really telling). He was playing in the first half with guys who were really trying and were passing the ball. But he was on the floor when the momentum shifted, and offensive possessions with him on the floor are terrible. I’m sure that if we had had anyone else on the floor instead of him during his entire 20 minutes, it would have been better than -3.

Where you are wrong is that the bench played well tonight
In fact the +/- of bench is all positive. Except for Zaza. That tells me Zaza was the one not effective. Please stude that info before posting
Often, it's when you play, not how you play
Trust me, Jason Collins was terrible. He’s at least partially responsible for the slow start after half-time. He’s useless offensively. When he played with the starters at the end of the first half, his +/- got jacked up quite a bit, but it wasn’t really because of anything he did. He wasn’t doing anything against Brand-Brand had 8 rebounds during the 16ish minutes that both he and Collins were on the floor (4 offensive and defensive). So he was actually somewhat less effective than during the other 21 minutes.
And it should be really embarrasing that ELTON BRAND is killing us on the boards.

Again his +/- with starters who played worse is much better than Zaza who played with bench that were playing better
That is not to say Collins played well.
But if you think either Zaza or Collins will give you value, then you are missing the big picture. This team clearly needs a starting level center. Neither of those two are starting level centers in NBA.
Collins is a situational center. Zaza is a backup. Neither will score a ton.
Each have virture.
Collins is smart. Understands defensive positioning, will take charges. Better defense against big men.
Zaza has more energy. Much more active on the offensive boards. In general more active. Horrible Horrible hands.

There was plenty of opportunities for Philly to get those misses and they did.
And we shot a higher percentage than the sixers

He really needs to watch film of Michael Jordan
He wasn’t the greatest because he was a great jumpshooter. Sure, he was good from mid-range, but he made his legend by driving to basket and just plain dunking on people. Later he turned into a pretty good shooter, but it was getting inside and getting to the line that made him legendary. Josh Smith needs to emulate THAT guy, more than Dirk Nowitzki.

Smith has clearout Pick and rolls and Transition.and thats it.
Jordan was a guard who used skills, quickness and/or strength advantage.
Smith is a tweener and can never be Dirk, or Jordan.
Even if Smith’s jumper is flowing like those guys… I’ve only see him pump fake a guy out and drive once this season. Only Tyrus Thomas was dumb enough to be scared of his jumper.
Smith is undersized, and like Shawn Marion, he can only win with certain players in this league. Josh Smith is Josh Smith.
Because of his lack of off the dribble skills he will always live and die by that jumper. He’s done developing. And I’m beginning to doubt Radmanovic was ever considered a stretch “Power” Forward.
I was watching him with the 2nd unit and He posts up less than Marvin!

Now the guard is a wing. The wing is the outlet recipient of rebounders. I advocated Smith as a wing getting transition buckets.
Jason Collins is a smart player but he’s too slow and uncoordinated.
Maybe you haven’t noticed but Smith is a smart player. His skillset is limited though. He doesn’t have the tools that Jordan had.
Josh Smith can be as smart as he wants. He’s not good at shooting off the dribble.
How many times must people say Hawks should try the Pistons model with Smith as a Rodman type SF. You need a shooting big and motion to balance his weaknesses.
Offensively there have been athletic guys who were just bad shooting off the dribble. Dennis Rodman comes to mind. And I mean the Pistons model not the MJ Bulls or David Robinson Spurs.
Pick and rolls and shooters and rebounders to let him run. But his skills development is pretty much peaked at that. A Gerald Wallace/Marion/Rodman type SF

That's how I am feeling.
But the Hawks had control of the game and let the turnovers and missed shots take them out of the game. They held Philly to 39 points in the first half. Philly scored 15 points in the first 6 minutes of the 3rd quarter, 25 all together.
Smoove and Joe really.
When Smoove was active and played fairly well in the first half, the Hawks had control of the game even with Joe not having it going. In the second half, when both are in a funk, you see what happens. Teague also didn’t have it going in that 3rd quarter.
Smoove was played by Elton Brand. Who is baby Garnett on defense.
And wow did not know but finished with 9.4 wins shared last year. He’s still elite

Zaza is really inconsistent on the boards. He has 2 double-doubles already this year. And he had 11 boards in the last game. If he can be consistent on the boards, he can play 25 minutes a game a be productive.
Horford definitely would have helped.
But we lost this game because of turnovers, missed shots, and not getting back on D. Did you see the 3rd quarter. Iggy had atleast 4 breakaway dunks. I don’t think Horford would have been able to track Iggy down to block those dunks.

This game was not about the center position or Al at all. At all. I know you watched the third quarter. The turnovers, the missed shots, the long rebounds and the outlet passes for dunks. Horford would not have made any more difference in this games as he did in the Chicago game or the Miami game that we lost.
You will have a chance to pick another game, when its clear that the Hawks lost because of play down low. But this isn’t the one.
No Jason Collins does not do anything. Al Horford was the 4th option that made Marvin irrelevant.
Now you have to replace that.
Is Marvin going to replace that? He might as well have no shooting pocket. Someone’s always in it.
Is Collins? Zaza came the closest and he’s terrible?
Size and skill killed us today. No point in going “big” if you have no skill. No point in going “small” if you have no rebounding.
I don’t know how it’s a “big” lineup if Marvin is starting in place of Horford.

I think the reason rebounds were down was lack of effort and to many jumpers.
- You can’t get rebounds when you’re hanging around the perimeter being lazy

Let's not throw the team or specific players under the buss over one loss.
They played really well in the first half, but they also shot 50% from the field. The hawks were outrebounded, not because of lack of size because the average height of our starters is bigger than theirs as well as the bench players that played, because they didn’t play hard. They didn’t crash the boards and they took to many jump shots. When your jumpers aren’t falling you run the risk of getting drilled on the boards. Josh is a great players, he just bailed out tonight. I think he will look at the numbers and get back to the Josh we’ve seen most of the season tomorrow night. Marvin has played great this year as well. One game doesn’t mean we should just get rid of him. Joe Johnson didn’t play very well either. I believe this loss was a team effort that started with the starters and trickled down to the bench.

Tonight like so many other nights Josh Smith was revealed as the center. Other than him there’s no one preventing paint looks. At least a center can push Brand and Vucevic out.

Bad losses happen, it should have happened in Minnesota
I felt the first half was a bit of a mirage, at least offensively anyway, none of the starters had anything offensivley and Teague’s lack of experience cost the Hawks the game in the second half. Josh Smith had become way too reliant on the Jumpshot recently and it came to bite them
Highlight of the night was Jason Collins getting outjumped by 6-8 Elton Brand for a rebound, who no longer has any lift due to multiple knee surgeries
