Horford for Kaman
This is totally hypothetical because we have yet to see how things work out over a longer stretch of games without Al, although I say losing Al is minor hiccup. If the Hawks continue to play as well as they are, there is a legitimate claim that the Hawks would be one dominant defensive minded and offensively capable center away from competing for a championship. That is of course if the bench continues to exceed expectations, Josh continues his MVP run, Joe continues to show why he has been selected as an All-Star 6 consecutive years, and Jeff Teague continues to show that he can play with the best point guards in the league.
So just say that Al becomes expendable...
Would it be worth the gamble of trading for Kaman, who is set to be a free agent in the summer, near the trade deadline?
There are several reason I would say yes:
-Kaman is a legitimate 7 foot shot blocker and he is just as productive offensively as Al.
-The Hawks would become players in free agency during the summer. Kaman's 14 mil and Hinrich's 8 mil coming off the books in the summer would put the Hawks over 10million under the cap.
-Kaman may also be a better fit in terms of giving the Hawks a low post threat and a better compliment to Joe and Josh.
-Most importantly, he fills the starting center void left by Al

7-4 With Al
4-0 Without Al
51 Hawk games left
I wonder if Horford heals before the playoffs begins and we’re still on a tear sitting at the 1, 2, or 3 seed in the East, do we try to sneak him back into the lineup with the possibility of destroying the Hawk’s chemistry?
In response to your writeup, Kaman would also be cheaper for the Hawks, enabling us to make a couple of more roster moves to strengthen the team.
Can you trade injured players?

^ Wrong
Yes you can if the team knows the player is injured and accepts it.

pass
It says something when your not good enough to start for the clippers imo. They would have to at least throw in that pick they acquired from the clippers to even consider it.
This got me thinking of another potential deal though. With Boston getting old and looking to deal, should we try to make a deal with them for Kirk, Marvin and a pick for Paul Pierce. I’d think Pierce would give this team a killer instinct they’ve been lacking.

I would not do that trade for Pierce.
I really believe that Kirk is the Hawks X-factor now with Teague, Joe, Josh, Marvin and the bench all playing really good basketball. Pargo has been able to play spot minutes and provide sustaining backup point guard play. But Hinrich has the ability to make plays at both ends of the floor. I think letting JCrossover go shows that more is better, especially in a compressed season. Marvin and Hinrich are much more valuable than Pierce alone.
And...
That totally disregards the fact that any trade that would occur now would be to acquire a center.
Bogut? Hello
I know they’re both big white guys but Chris Kaman is not the center you want. He gets his share of blocks but he’s slower much older, misses more games and does nothing on defense. Even on a winning team his numbers were pedestrian. Our center needs to be able to do what Zaza does but better and actually finish putbacks.
When has Kaman ever shown to be scrappy like Zaza. Anything but a finesse scorer who mopes about touches?
This guy turns 30 in 3 months. How long is that window open?
Bogut is the clear cut choice. And Kaman is pretty insulting. Especially considering New Orleans would have
- high pick
- Okafor
- Horford
Kaman is on the bench behind Landry and Okafor.
Heck no and no way. Its not a smart move

If there was an assurance of Bogut staying healthy, then yes and no.
The thing that draws my attention to Kaman is that Kaman has had a career as a starting center. He has been an All-Star. Also, Kaman’s contract comes off the bench for the Hawks at the end of the season. And so, that may be the biggest benefit of all. The Hawks would go from a good team pressing against the luxury tax to a good team under the salary cap and able to make a plethora of moves.
Bogut if healthy is the clear choice but considering his contract and string of issues, I think that gaining cap space is much more beneficial.
I don't think the Bucks are stupid enough to do that trade
Bogut is one of the premiere defensive centers in the league. I’ve heard analysts (crazy or not) say he’s better defensively than a Dwight Howard, because when Bogut get’s a block his team is more likely to get the ball back whereas Dwight’s blocks are slapped far away from the play.
Bucks are trying to rebuild. Skiles is on his way out. Bogut is not even close to carrying that team. He's a 4th option. And available for youth.

well since Horford is missing the season they would obviously tank ;). So a higher pick is incentive.

I mean everyone now agrees that what Horford brought was little better than a big traditional center. But Bogut + Pachulia platoon not Kaman + Zaza
is the answer…[inserts footage of Bogut vs PHI].
Kaman is like Bogut done wrong. And trading for a backup would kill us. Do not want.

Don't know how the numbers work, but they would have close to enough cap space to go after Dwight in free agency.
And you'd have to get a future pick...
which if it was in this draft could be used for an Andre Drummond, JJ Sullinger or other C prospect.

Yeah...
It looks like the Hawks payroll would be at about $47 million in guaranteed contracts which is about $12 million under the 2011-2012 cap. Next year’s cap should go up. So the Hawks could amnesty Zaza or Marvin and have enough room to sign Howard.
Sigh. I still don't like New Orleans getting 2 centers, and a pick.
What is the alternative if Dwight ignores us? I don’t like the amnestying. We’re giving up 2 players for 1 territory now.
Plus, He hasn’t expanded his list to include us. I’d love to have Dwight but I’m tired of hearing all the rumors. He knows we want him and there is nary a rumor about him to ATL.

I doubt anyone gets that pick...
New Orleans is set on building through the draft. The trending thing in the NBA now is to get as many draft picks as possible and build through a youth movement. Atlanta, OKC, Sacramento, Memphis, Portland and now Minnesota have taken that route. So I don’t think that there’s any chance the Hawks to could pull a pick away, especially in this upcoming draft, which is probably the best draft class in Lebron, Wade, and Carmelo.
Does Kaman still play in the NBA??
You trade Horfords contract that would benefit the team for years for a center that does not even play the game anymore, he has more injury problems than t-mac. So cut this shit and hope for a miracle for this team. hope somebody will offer the hawks for joe jhonson and get valuable players and draft picks. The Hawks will be a successful team if this happen.. Wide room cap space, young players, potential superstars & established superstars, Josh Al & Teauge. The best thing that could happen for the hawks to move on top for next year,
What are some options for the Hawks to improve this year?
Pargo is acceptable as the backup PG if we were to trade Heinrich’s expiring contract now that he is healthy. Marvin and Kirk for Granger? The money adds up, we get a scorer from the 3, and we now longer have to worry about Marvin failing to live up to the hype. Other guys that look enticing include Jordan Hill and Terrence Williams, who did not have their options picked up by the Rockets.

Terrence Williams is a point guard/point forward. Not really a shooter. I heard Granger is slumping but a few weeks ago Bird said he was untouchable.
Has that changed?
