Al Horford To Miss 3-4 Months Per Yahoo! Sports
Worst. Case. Scenario.
Maybe the one guy the Hawks could not afford to lose --- Al Horford is out 3-4 months --- per Marc Spears of Yahoo! Sports (via Twitter).
From the official release from the team:
The Atlanta Hawks learned this afternoon that All-Star center Al Horford will likely miss three-to-four months of action after an MRI revealed a torn pectoral muscle in his left shoulder as a result of an injury he suffered with 6:08 remaining in the first quarter of Wednesday's game at Indiana.
Typically, this type of injury requires surgery, but Horford will get a second opinion and make a final decision at that time.
"We are very disappointed for Al and our team and we wish him the best as he moves forward in the rehabilitation process," said Hawks' Executive Vice President and General Manager Rick Sund. "He has contributed greatly to our success since his arrival in Atlanta, and that's evident by his selection to the NBA's All-League team last season (third team pick)."
The two-time All-Star finished with five points and two rebounds before leaving last night's contest, and in 11 games, Horford posted 12.4 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.3 blocks to go along with .553 FGs (eighth in the NBA).
Anyway, discuss. More will follow. For now, a clip that serves as the keynote for today's bad news:

An Excuse
Instead of blaming consistent inconsistency, I suppose that Drew and Sund will be able to blame injuries in 2011-12. Too bad for Al. He may not be what everybody wants him to be, but the guy is a good player.

Listen - season is lost
It is time to be forward looking. Chicago needs a good shooting guard to go for a championship. They are not happy with Noah. We need to be forward looking.. This team is not going anywhere without Lion. Anything else, is fooling oneself.
If indeed a pectoral muscle tear, this is season ending for him
Let's not over react now. We are still a good team.
And I still think we are a top 5 team in the East. We just can’t have injuries like this pill up

Over react?
Lion’s value will beome obvious in a few games.
Top five? I seriously doubt us making playoffs. I think more like lottery five
You're crazy man! If us making the playoffs is all on AL's shoulders
then the Hawks do have a huge problem. It’s time for other players to step up. We didn’t lose last night because we lost AL. We lost because we were without Marvin, Tracy, and AL. Getting those two back plus Kirk will be huge. We are still making the playoffs buddy. Mark my words!
by BravesFanScout on Jan 12, 2012 4:04 PM EST up reply actions 1 recs
So a team that was already lacking a center
Now loses any semblance of good center play. And that makes me crazy? No, that makes me a realist. Basketball is a big boy sport. If you lose you center, it means there is a void much bigger than losing a win.
You did not just lose a player. You lost an all star. While he was playing out of position, he was still an all star with all tangible and intangibles.
Replace that with Marvin? Don’t think so. But I like your optimism
I'm positive the Hawks will make the playoffs. Al is a solid player, but he isn't
what makes or breaks this team. I think Josh is a much more important player than AL. Zaza is going to step up and be a solid rebounder and contributer.
by BravesFanScout on Jan 12, 2012 4:12 PM EST up reply actions
13 and 7 dude, 13 and 7
The only thing the Hawks will miss about Horford, is that elbow J that he hasn’t shot at all this season.
Most advanced stats say it starts with centers. And Al is no exception. 13 and 7 does not tell the whole
story. You got to replace it with something. OK now Zaza starts…. Bad enough but who’s the backup?

As long as we make the playoffs, who cares, really?
I think we’re good enough to compete, even without Horf. And who knows? Maybe the ASG decides to make a move of some sort…
(not buying it, but maybe…)

I'd rather not make the playoffs
without Horford, how far can we go there anyway? Get in the lottery, maybe get lucky and hit a top 3 pick, and reload in a big way for next year, similar to how the Spurs added Duncan when David Robinson was lost for a year.
http://sportsandgrits.com/

the thing is,...
this team is still good enough not to tank, and players like Joe and Josh wouldn’t be willing to go that route, so we’d likely have to dump one of the two for a combination of draft picks, young players with upside, and expiring salaries.

Al
It’s a tough loss, but if our entire season outlook is based on a guy who averages 13 and 7, we weren’t going to make the playoffs anyway
Not just the numbers
The glue guy.
He is the guy that makes Smoove and JJ and Teague work together.
Without him, there will be no chemistry. Last night, was just the beginning.
We have three captains, but there really is only one leader who is now out
not only that
this instantly puts twin in the rotation. we screwed.
Larry Drew makes me think I can coach at a professional level.
I think Al is a great player, but honestly he is the same player when he came out of college.
I don’t think Al is a leader. I don’t think the Hawks have a leader, they just go out a play ball. This is going to big for Josh. I think he will start playing more aggressive and closer to the basket. ATLpaul, you’ve got to stop overreacting man. Al is a solid player, but he isn’t the team.
by BravesFanScout on Jan 12, 2012 4:09 PM EST up reply actions
I am one of the biggest Smoove fans you can find
But what you will find with Smoove now, is he will try to take over.
That in turn means he will play out of control.
Lion is a calming influence on Smoove. One of few players Smoove actually respects on this team. He is his blood brother.
The next few games will reveal a lot about character of the Hawks. We shall wait and carry this exchange after those games. We know where we stand on the impact of loss of Lion
Smoove
I thought when Al was out last season, Josh seemed to be more comfortable knowing what his job was.
Smoove is a natural Power Forward
He plays the Power Forward position. As such loss of Lion is not going to impact where he plays.
Where it will hurt him, are the exchange and defensive rotations they play.
where it hurts, is the fact that he lost his running mate on the breaks.
They throw lobs to each other. And they pass to each other.
Now Smoove has to pass to Zaza in traffic. Enough said
If you think his accurately described by "13 and 7,"
You’re probably the one who is delusional. His numbers were slightly down, partly because his minutes were down, and partly because it was still very early in the season. At least, you should call him a 16/10 guy, since that’s pretty much what he has shown to be over the past two years. And that’s probably still understating his impact.
Braves will be fine. I'm not worried.
by Bronn on Sep 18, 2011 4:26 PM EDT
Did not expect any improvement in those at all?
And again, part of that is because he’s played fewer minutes, like all the starters.
Braves will be fine. I'm not worried.
by Bronn on Sep 18, 2011 4:26 PM EDT
Maybe a bit
But he was not having a very good season so far. This season’s outlook should be different because of our bench. Horford is not a game changer. That being said, his 13 and 7 can and should be replaceable
"Should be" and "is" are not the same thing...
… when Zaza is your backup.
Yeah, Zaza can probably put up something close to 13 and 7 given starters’ minutes, but at much lower efficiency, much higher turnover rate, much worse defense, and without the threat of the mid range jumper.

yep, which is why in referring to my point below this.
this is a great season to be in the lottery. especially with a team as set as this one
We are still a good team guys.
We are still a playoff team! I think this injury is the direct result of REFEREES not make calls. AL got fouled the first time he went up and got raped the second time and it resulted in losing him for the season. The Refs let that game get out of hand. The Hawks shot a lot of free throws yesterday, but realistically we should have shot 10-15 more. The Hawks ARE going to make the playoffs and they are gonna do well this season. This is Marvin’s time to step up and Zaza to take on a larger role (05-06 11.7ppg and 8 Rb). If we can get similar production we will be fine.
I think we can make the playoffs
its just we wont be in the top 3 anymore. It just kills our chances for homecourt advantage through the second round.
Larry Drew makes me think I can coach at a professional level.
Silver Lining
This is like the best time to have a down year. The draft is loaded with talent. I am thinking about when the Spurs drafted Tim Duncan. This would be a great year to have a down year be in the lottery and get a top talent to really energize this franchise.
I wonder if there's any potential we could trade JJ for pretty much anything at this point
And get a first round pick back with it. We could really load up for next year, with perhaps a pair of first round picks and then cap space.
Braves will be fine. I'm not worried.
by Bronn on Sep 18, 2011 4:26 PM EDT
This
is exactly what I thought of right after my initial shock and denial wore off. The reason we’ve topped out at “consistent playoff but not elite/contender” status is because we’ve not had a high lottery pick since Horf (not to mention our three before that were downright putrid – Shelden, Marv, J-Chill). We’ve got a solid core squad — no need to blow up. Let’s hope for a good lottery draw and finally have a solid pick for next season…
You know what...
Thats exactly how San Antonio got Tim Duncan. And that’s exactly how the Colts will get Andrew Luck!
Not up to date with draft? What top players should we be looking at? Is he a Big man? SF? SG?

isnt that usually season ending in the nfl? I have faith we can make the playoffs, maybe at a lower seed now but if he’s here by playoffs we should still be good. only thing this hurts really is our chances of homecourt and our “power rankings” that some people for some reason think is important
Larry Drew makes me think I can coach at a professional level.
Wow, y'all are really positive
For how much love Al gets on this blog I figured there would be a lot more “sky is falling” posts.
To be honest, while this no doubt sucks, I think this is a great opportunity to dismantle the core and rebuild. Trade Joe/Josh/Marvin, clear cap space, get draft picks in this year’s deep draft, and build a newer and better core.
twitter.com/fakericksund
An intelligent man that I can finally agree with
I would not have entertained blowing the core, but I see no hope now
I don't necessarily think we should blow the whole thing up
But I’m always in favor of trading JJ, if possible. I’d hold off on trading Marvin, just for a little bit. If he comes back healthy and playing like he did before he got hurt, he could potentially drive up his trade value. Let him work it up to a peak, potentially, before we move him.
Braves will be fine. I'm not worried.
by Bronn on Sep 18, 2011 4:26 PM EDT
Where is the blow-it up guy when we need him?
He pushed the nuclear button way too often and pre-maturely, but I believe this is the time. We must entertain those thoughts seriously.
We must look forward and rebuild. Look for trading JJ, either to a contender that needs him, or for multiple draft picks. It is time.
Slim is about to pop in here and tell us we should have traded Horford for Mehmet Okur when we had the chance.

I'm the blow it up guy?
A player Can’t hit perimeter shots and takes it inside. Where he’s undersized. The player gets horrifically injured…on a routine, everyday play. And you’re saying rebuild around said player.
AND then clowning me, the guy who says get shooters, get bigger, as the “blow it up” guy?
I find it ironic and that’s my response. No doubt people will say I’m a cold hearted SOB and say I’m Charles Barkley 2.0. I don’t care.
Also find it ironic and disrespectful every other day to say “Trade JJ to a contender”. What the hell? Why can’t ATL be the contender? Always the bridesmaid…
Instead of just saying “Slim may have been right with the Bogut+ Leuer + bench some starters helps us > Vlad +Horford can help us” you start throwing pot shots. Memo Okur? As if I ever asked for over the hill Mehmet Okur or as if we don’t pay “under the hill” Jerry Stackhouse.

The is the perfect opportunity for everyone to see that Al is not much more of a difference than Zaza.
How soft is the boss to get put down by a throwing the ball into Hibbert’s outstretched hands?
Well
The second time, Hibbert slapped him on the arm, crashed into his chest, and nearly slapped his face. That’s the one that knocked him down. Not a flagrant foul, but definitely a foul, and it didn’t draw a whistle.
And, while I think we’ll gain more appreciation for Zaza out of this, I think we should also gain some appreciation for Horford.

by Bronn on Sep 18, 2011 4:26 PM EDT
There is too much appreciation for a guy that has never showed up in the playoffs and is the 2nd best PF on the team.
really?
ha! ok. basketball IQ is highly underrated. The reason our bench looks better is because of their high basketball IQ. Josh is the low point of our b-ball IQ and if he can settle down and get us to the playoffs that’ll be a major improvement in his game
Atlanta will win a championship....someday
IQ is awsome, but production is much more important.
High IQ players go in to coaching when their production goes away. Jerry Stackhouse probably has a very high basketball IQ.
This is unfair statement
Lion has played Hibbert well in the past. This is a injury that can happen to any one at any time.
Hibbert is 7’2" was pushing down standing on his feet.. Lion 6’9" jumping up and pushing up. Sudden force made it happen.
It can happen to any one. What does that have to do with being soft?
Exactly... the bossy softy!
A real boss would have stuffed Hibbert’s hand in the rim with the ball. Well a little exaggerated but com’ on man, you would have thought that his right should was the injury. Now the fall looked a whole lot worse than that weak block by Hibbert.
This is real time basketball
Not just a video game. Any one can get injured, that has nothing to do with being soft
Ha... Al's mediocre season is saved by injury.
Now he doesn’t have to make excuses as to why he can’t grab 10 rebounds.
Zaza to the rescue!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Guess it’s time for a Honesty Corner. Before I do, let me just say – uh…panic much! Good grief – half the teams in the league still suck, so we’re still making the playoffs. That didn’t change. Now, if he can’t get back by April to get back into a groove by playoff time – ok, but otherwise, everyone take a chill pill. This is going to be a perfect time for guys to step up and show what they are made of. It’ll also show us what life is like without Al to determine which of him or Josh needs to be traded. I’m looking at the upside. And if we start tanking because Al was more valuable than I’ve given him credit for, then great – I’m wrong and we can get a higher draft pick to pair with him next season. So, this is not the time to panic – smart GMs are able to figure this stuff out…oh wait. make that a Hennessy with a splash of coke, please
Hawk Str8Talk
Maybe dump Smoove or if possible Joe
for some young talent that can grow going forward, combine with a high draft pick, or two, and be ready to explode on the scene next year. I’d rather not make the playoffs and have another early exit.

No need to panic I think
we have a decent trade chip with Kirk and we can trade for big man such as Anderson V in cleveland or lamar in dallas. the salaries kind of match and Kirk is expiring.

If we can tread water until March and remain in the hunt, how about using the MLE to land Kenyon Martin when he’s eligible to return to the NBA? If Al returns for the playoffs then we have a deep mean middle. If not we are still viable.

You guys will be fine
Offensively, you don’t make use of the center position anyways. If Pach and Collins can semi-hold the fort down in the paint defensively, you’ll make the playoffs easy. However, I would expect the FO to make a move. Nab a rental C, perhaps Kaman?
We'll see...
Even making a move for a guy like Kaman is sketchy since we don’t have a surplus of assets. Front office would be stupid to shell out picks, yet again. If we get someone, we’re signing him off the street or out of the D-League.
And I’m not so sure we’ll be “fine,” either. Going back to before Horford was a Hawk, this was not a very good basketball team. And Jason Collins just is not very useful.

The Hawks will be ok, still be top 5 in the east. I have a Major fucking problem tho with how the Pacers play the game with basketball. They hack over the shoulder all the time. Granted the play on Horford wasnt such an instance but in general that team plays dirty
Boo Hoo!

Ask Teagues, He’s an Indy product…he’ll tell you me and other players here knocked the shit outta him to make him a little tougher for the NBA. Yes or course Gordon (Eric & Haywood), Z.Randolf, the Zeller boys, Maquise Teague (thats Jeff’s little BETTR brother at KY now), Bonzi Wells, Courtney Lee, George Hill, JuJuan Johnson, Greg Oden just to name a few.
