Reports are that they are shopping Josh also

but asking for a ton in return. Has to be a home run trade if we move Josh.

Having traded for Heinrich already, it would seem unlikely they would trade Josh for another PG. I can’t think of a C who might be available who would be worth Josh (I assume Dwight Howard isn’t on the trade block). Who is out there the Hawks might want back in a Josh trade?

by redwards95 on Feb 24, 2011 12:21 PM EST up reply actions

I was sitting here trying to think myself

Just sounds like a home run attempt to me. Like they call New Orleans and say hey we will trade you Josh for Chris Paul and then the Hornets politely hang up the phone.

Really though I have no idea. I guess Al Jefferson is probably available but would the Hawks be willing to do that?

@KrisPTHoops

Does it have to be a PG or C?

Could they go after a true SF instead? Or maybe two really good players at SF and C?

Does anyone remember when zaza had that double double the first game of the season

More rumors

From Hoopsworld:
“Keep an eye on Dallas; they have been linked to Atlanta’s Josh Smith, Miami’s Mike Miller and Detroit’s Tayshaun Prince, and seem poised to make a deal…”

It's telling . . .

That I didn’t even notice they held Zaza out of the lineup last night.

by Evil Dallas on Feb 24, 2011 1:25 PM EST reply actions

Excellent trade getting Hinrich. He had been languishing on a crappy Wizards team. he’s a far better upgrade than Mike Bibby. that’s for sure.

by Jeffrey Thompson on Feb 24, 2011 1:56 PM EST reply actions

Wasn't there a trade...

Involving the Clippers (Davis, No. 1) and the Cavs (Williams)? Maybe it’s not official?

As for the Hawks, the more I think about our team with Hinrich v. Bibby, the more I like the move.

I am a fan of the Dawgs, Falcons, and Braves...oh...and tacos, but I like the other three more.

by Jman781 on Feb 24, 2011 2:05 PM EST reply actions

From SI...

At work and too lazy to paraphrase, but I like this analysis by Zach Lowe:

Nabbing Hinrich doesn’t make the Hawks a title contender, but it feels like the kind of move that could have a bigger impact on the court than many anticipate. Start with this: Hinrich can defend point guards. Very well. And that addresses the main problem with Atlanta’s defense, which ranks about average despite the Hawks’ having faced the easiest schedule in the league. It isn’t just that Bibby can’t defend point guards; it’s the degree to which the Hawks have had to compensate for the 32-year-old’s defensive issues. They’ve had to tire out Johnson by assigning him point guard duty. They’ve gone to zone defenses that haven’t really worked. They’ve switched too often, though less so this season under rookie coach Larry Drew.

They can toss out those gimmicks now and go to work with lineups like Hinrich, Johnson, Marvin Williams, Josh Smith and Al Horford. That works.

The Hawks will miss Bibby’s shooting, but it’s not as if they are losing a pick-and-roll stud who initiates most of their sets. Bibby handles the ball some, but he’s usually a spot-up shooter and screen-setter in Drew’s offense, which mixes in motion plays, post-ups and lots of off-the-dribble work for Johnson and Jamal Crawford. Hinrich, 30, can step into Bibby’s role immediately, and he happens to be shooting a solid 38 percent from three-point range (and a career-best 45 percent overall) this season.

One small bonus that Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel picked up on immediately: Hinrich is 6-3, tall and strong for a point guard, and he has defended a ton of shooting guards through a career of shifting between the two backcourt positions. That gives Atlanta a nice answer for when Miami goes to lineups that don’t include traditional point guards, and if the Heat earn the top seed in the Eastern Conference, there’s at least a small chance the two teams will meet in the second round.

I am a fan of the Dawgs, Falcons, and Braves...oh...and tacos, but I like the other three more.

Now that I think about, this will hep us defensely

Its just the fact that I now have to root for Heinrich which hurts me the most. For the past 2 years I have been going to his games just to heckle him. Its gonna be hard for me

by Throw on Feb 24, 2011 2:17 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah...

I didn’t think of the effect that Hinrich would have on the OTHER players. Sure, I knew that he was better defensively than Bibby, but keeping guys like Joe Johnson fresh is huge. Also, a backcourt of Crawford and Bibby still makes me crinch—Hinrich and Crawford…much better.

While I still think that Boston is the team to beat in the East (I do…sorry), I like the Hawks’ chances much more now than I did 24 hours ago. Maybe, just maybe, Hinrich is the piece we needed to have our team play the way it should play (i.e. guys don’t have to play out of position as much). Lord knows that last night’s game was rough.

Did we give up too much? Maybe, but really, other than the #1 pick, what did Washington really receive? Old man Bibby, a project, and a waste of space (sorry Mo). Let’s be honest with ourselves, for that package, we did pretty darn well. As others had said, Hinrich is more of a sure thing than any late round first round pick our management would select—we weren’t finding a Rondo in the draft.

And I haven’t even discussed the potential of Armstrong (minimal, but it’s there).

I am a fan of the Dawgs, Falcons, and Braves...oh...and tacos, but I like the other three more.

by Evil Dallas on Feb 24, 2011 3:48 PM EST up reply actions

Hopefully, the Hawks make another move

All I can say right now is that I’ll be heavily disappointed if no additional trade for the Hawks goes through before the deadline. Hinrich is a solid upgrade at PG over Mike Bibby, but I don’t feel very confident going forward if our personnel stays as is. Many Eastern Conference teams have made improvements through trades in the last few days, and I’m not saying that our roster isn’t formidable, but with the way Drew has been using our players so far, I don’t feel confident that we can make major noise in the playoffs going forward without a big move. I just hope another deal is made.

Brad Miller at least has to be guarded when near the perimeter, creating more space for our true inside offensive players in Horford, Smith, and Johnson.

that's it?

So it seems that was the only Hawks deal. It should be interesting to see if Heinrich is enough for the Hawks to hold off the Knicks and keep the 5th seed.

It is disappointing we could not trade Zaza

Now I have to watch him getting stripped off the ball every time he goes inside for the rest of the season. Well at least he seems to have learnt Basketball 101 on how not to set a moving screen lately

by ATLpaul on Feb 24, 2011 8:00 PM EST reply actions

Maybe

A lot of teams were supposedly in search of a big man. We found no good offers for Zaza. I think that would point to either we wanted too much (unlikely) or that people really didn’t want his contract heading into the new CBA.

by Evildallas on Feb 24, 2011 9:20 PM EST up reply actions

So Boston trades two of their bigs for a second round pick?

they could have given us that but i guess they wouldn’t do it in conference

Atlanta will win a championship....someday

by maxxj3 on Feb 24, 2011 10:58 PM EST reply actions

You mean Erden & Harangoody?

Went in conference, just to Cleveland. We had the exceptions to do such a deal, but we would have had to cut someone and pay luxury tax to do so. I suspect that since Cleveland bought out former Celtic Leon Powe that there was a wink-wink understanding in the move. Powe might be resigning with Boston soon.

On the sad side Erden who was given away has similar numbers to Zaza this season at a tenth of the price.

Great job Kris

The celtics deal is still the strangest of the bunch. What a crazy move! Just don’t get it. I mean i get the dynamics of them possibly losing Perkins after the season, but they just did away with their strongest area (big men) and put all their money on very old often injured players. They may have made a world championship mistake by trading Perkins to OKC.

by ATLpaul on Feb 25, 2011 7:45 AM EST up reply actions

I agree

The move may have been brought on by his rejecting their extension offer but I don’t think they should have made a move until after the season. I really OKC now and wouldn’t it be crazy if Boston played them in the finals?

@KrisPTHoops

by Kris Willis on Feb 25, 2011 7:52 AM EST up reply actions

Hawks second pick-up

Is Armstrong enough of a player to take Collins place in the lineup? Can he play center? Then we move Marvin to bench to strengthen the bench? And Collins and Damien there also.

by ATLpaul on Feb 25, 2011 7:57 AM EST up reply actions

I'm skeptical

but I guess we start to see how it plays out tonight. I will be glad when they get off the west coast, these 10:30 starts are killing me

by Kris Willis on Feb 25, 2011 8:01 AM EST up reply actions

Yes the 10:30 starts are late

but always kind of surreal so I don’t mind them, as long as we start winning a few. I really am wanting to show some passion but they are killing my positive juices

by ATLpaul on Feb 25, 2011 8:07 AM EST up reply actions

the celtics deal was strategy

Sending Perkins could help OKC knock out LA. And the celtics get younger with Jeff Green when they have to play Miami (supposedly)
