Atlanta Hawks Roster Taking Shape After Jannero Pargo Signing

Star-divide

Atlanta's signing of veteran point guard Jannero Pargo probably means the end of the line for Brad Wanamaker and Donald Sloan as the team's final roster begins to take shape.

Here is how things are projecting:

PG: Jeff Teague / Jannero Pargo / Kirk Hinrich

SG: Joe Johnson / Pape Sy

SF: Marvin Williams / Tracy McGrady

PF: Josh Smith / Vladimir Radmanovic / Keith Benson / Magnum Rolle

C: Al Horford / Zaza Pachulia / Jason Collins

As reported by MC, Pargo's contract won't become fully guaranteed until February 10 so the Hawks could choose to waive him then to get themselves back under the luxury tax threshold. By that time Kirk Hinrich will be expected to be back. I haven't confirmed it but this could also be the case with Magnum Rolle's contract which would give the Hawks a little more flexibility.

Pargo's one-year, veterans' minimum contract provides the Hawks some flexibility to avoid a luxury-tax payment at season's end. His contract is among those that won't become guaranteed until Feb. 10. The unpaid portion of non-guaranteed contracts does not count toward team salary if players are waived by that date.

This is a similar situation to the one Damien Wilkins faced last season. Atlanta waived him shortly before his contract would become guaranteed and then signed him to two consecutive 10-day contracts before finally signing him for the remainder of the season.

Am I wrong to feel better about this year’s collection of cheap vets than previous years’?

Still don't trust those bigs

but when Hinrich gets healthy, and if McGrady stays in good health, I really like having those two, + Pargo as backup PG and Sy as a wing defender off the bench.

It's truly sad...

How scared of going over the tax threshold the ASG are.

I get it; this is purely a business to them, so they make all decisions with the almighty dollar in mind. That said, it’s silly, for they would be barely over.

I am not certain but my unofficial math

has them just a few thousand over. Because I am not for sure is the reason I didn’t publish the salary numbers.

Why is it a big deal? Here is why. Lets say they went $100,000 over the tax line. They would have to pay $100,000 in penalties which is chump change right? You are correct except they wouldn’t receive their share of the luxury tax money that is paid out to the teams under the cap which I am sure is several million dollars.

I get the big deal of it

but if he puts us over, and we don’t cut anyone, I don’t see the point since it’s not like we can get cheaper than the minimum, which is pretty much our entire bench besides Hinrich and Zaza. McGrady, Pargo, Twin, Benson, Rolle, Sy, Radmanovich; all on minimum salary deals.

Damn, I really don’t like the Joe deal. At least offer the man just under max ala DWade, Lebron, etc. Since we’re such a penny pinching org, why outbid yourself?

The big deal part was meant for Jman781

They just have to get under the tax line by the end of the season. They can be over until then provided nothing changes from last season.

I didn't realize...

The ramifications of not sharing in the luxury tax. Makes sense.

I still dislike the ASG.

My personal projection had them just under the cap at 13 players

This scenario has 14 which also leads me to believe they will be at the line or slightly over

So then you just cut Magnum Rolle

I don’t get the obsession with him to begin with. He’s over 25, so not exactly young with loads of room to develop. He’s a decent D League player but not even a 20/10 guy on that level. He’s not a wide body shot blocker. He’s not a stretch 4 that can knock down jumper after jumper. So where does he fit if he’s not either of those things, nor a project for the future ala Sy/Benson?

If they give Pargo the Damien Wilkins treatment

Do you think they will fall below the luxury tax threshold. Instead of signing for the vet min, cut him, give him a couple 10-day contracts and then sign him for the remainder of the season (that’s if he’s any good). We may not even need him by then since Kirk would be back in a few weeks.

But if we did take that route, would the team save a couple hundred thousand by doing so? That way they’d be under the luxury tax and have some depth at the 1 spot.

That is kind of the way I see it although I am not completely sure of the salary numbers

If I am not mistaken both Pape Sy and Magnum Rolle’s contracts won’t be guaranteed until Feb 10 as well which provides a few more options.

This...

At least there’s (positive) name recognition.

Can someone fill me in on Pargo? As an SEC basketball fan, I know him from his Arky days, but is he a solid bench option? His stats are less than stellar, but he hasn’t played much recently.

Solid, nothing special

decent PG, decent scorer. He’s a good fill in for Hinrich until he gets healthy and then can slide in to a deep reserve role after that.

Best years came in New Orleans

If I remember correctly, then went overseas and never has really found a consistent opportunity since returning.

I honestly have nothing good to say about him

He’s a decent, not great, three-point shooter. He doesn’t do much else that’s useful in terms of scoring. He shoots free-throws at a high percentage but almost never gets to line. He handles the ball okay but isn’t a pure distributor, doesn’t get a ton of assists. His highest PER, ever, was 13.4. He’s a somewhat decent defensive player-maybe just a tad better than Jamal Crawford, which doesn’t say anything. He doesn’t rebound, doesn’t get steals, and perhaps turns the ball over more than he should.

Looking at basketball-reference, he’s never had a season where his team has outscored the competition while he’s on the floor. His team always, always allows more points than they score during Pargo’s time on the floor. Hopefully the Hawks can change that this year. Or if not, hopefully he never plays.

My buddy and I just decided that the braves would be set if we could get Matt Kemp, Jose Reyes, and Albert Pujols.

Not me

I’m not excited about the bench at all. Basically, it’s Zaza and then a prayer that McGrady has something in the tank. That’s it in my mind, but my mind has failed me before. The sad part about the cap mismanagement is that we will be cutting players and bringing them back to keep under the cap. Which means even if we saw this team jell and make a push – we wouldn’t be able to make a move to fill in the blanks. We’re basically praying that the ‘core’ gets better, stays healthy, and that Jeff Teague is the playoff 2011 Jeff Teague every game this year. Which means for the cheap vets – we have to keep them from really being needed or else they’ll be dead come playoffs. So, no – you’re not wrong, but if we go back to each offseason – we all find reason to be excited until the season starts and these guys start playing, then we say – hmmm, well – I wondered why he was available for the vet minimum and now I know.
