Pape Sy for #13?
I'm not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing? I'm leaning towards bad to be honest.

This makes sense...
Why waste money on a potential big like Hassan Whiteside or Jarvis Varnado when you could draft a complete unknown Mario West-lite player like Pape Sy and pay him slightly less?
not sure what this post is about
- is that his jersey number or is he the 13 player on the roster
what does #13 mean
Pleez...
The #13 jersey is and will always be synonymous with the great Helsinki Warror: Hanno Mottola.

ya know
For a mutt lover, you’re fairly hilarious. Rec’d

Ain't nothin wrong with a damn good...
dawg. Sure is a heckuva lot nicer than being an engineer considering the last 10-20 years record between the rivals in football, men’s basketball, and of course, male/female student population percentages.
Yeah
I’ll just refer you to this.

No seriously, stick with me for a minute. I think we all agree that the ASG has continually proven how wasteful they can be when it comes to the draft in general, but with the second round picks specifically. If they are going to continue to be stubborn and only field the league minimum of 13, then why not actually use that last spot on one of thier picks?
By all accounts, Sy looks to fit the Knight prototype when looking at his measures. Maybe he doesn’t have what it takes to be a true PG in the NBA and he is clearly not a pure SG, but he could fill in as the backup SF and could probably do a much better job than Evans. At least it would give us a little more depth and if he can play D close to Williams, then he could easily be groomed as his replacement should Williams never fulfill his potential.
He could even be used defensively late in garbage time at any of the first three spots to maintain a lead if his defense is sound enough. Honestly though, I think I’d much rather see the ASG actually use their picks than to sign another waste of a so-called ‘veteran’.

What would he give that can't come from Mario West?...
at which point why not let him stay in Europe for a year to get additional playing experience before bringing him over. We can sign any number of random names from the D League or undrafted free agents to fill a similar role (Mikhail Torrence among others), while not stunting Sy’s development or accelerating his pay (getting his rookie deal going earlier and on to the veteran salary scale sooner).
So there is kind of no way to get this described as “not a bad move”.
As for the video you linked above, assuming you are a college educated individual and have seen such videos before, any guess how many major state school orientation videos aren’t as equally lame?
Not saying there isn't a better move
Just noting that given this organizations propensity to waste draft picks, bringing Sy over is somewhat a move in the right direction. Maybe it’s a lateral move, yes, but it’s a move nonetheless. While I agree about the pay issue, I don’t really see how bringing Sy over to the NBA now would be stunting his development. He’d be playing against far better competition and learning from much better players as well. And sticking with the thought that he would be replacing Mario West’s role on the team, no player in that position is worth much of anything. We’re talking garbage minutes here, nothing critical. Speaking of which, I’m going to assume that he would be cheaper than signing West again.

the development line is obviously debatable...
what would be better, coming over here and practicing against fellow NBA players (that is assuming the ASG sticks at 13 eliminating the ability to send Sy to the D League, which would probably be the best case scenario), but only geetting say 100 minutes total of game action throughout the entire season, or would it be better to let him stay in France where (again, youi’d assume) he starts and gets a lot more playing time in games?
An argument could be made it’s best to let our raw talent play major minutes for his French team, and an argument could be made for stateside practice. Obviously the best would be combining both and letting him come here while also getting significant playing time with the D League, but as said above, that doesn’t seem like an option the front office will allow for by signing more than the minimum 13.

Yeah, I agree
Bringing him over and letting him get his feet wet in the D-League would be the best option. I guess that by “not a bad move” I really mean “a better move than doing nothing”. But, that’s just my opinion given that we know the ASG doesn’t use the D-L and they never bring their second round picks over from abroad, so if I had to pick something, I’d much rather see him and feel like we were actually using our picks versus never hearing about him again.
I feel like it’s one of those lesser of the evils situations.
