Confirmed: Al Horford will play more power forward.
This report comes from Fox Sports En Espanol. In the Google translation of the story, Larry Drew's first name somehow turned into "Mike." The main point is that it's clear it's being communicated to Al that he will be playing the position that he's been playing most of his life. My questions are:
Will he continue to start at center? If not, what do you all think about Zaza or Josh Powell starting at center?
How will this effect the rest of the lineup? Josh Smith at SF? Marvin Williams to the bench?

this won't do the rest of the lineup well unless he still starts as c
And play pf when he “feels” like it. I mean, would they bench al to be smooves backup or vice versa? moving smoove to sf would be a mistake. I know he is developing the jumper but he doesn’t need that type of “freedom.” now I knew al would wanna play pf more but earlier in the summer a report came out on ajc quoting him saying he knew he would still be starting as c but he still wanted to play pf when needed. give me a working scenario of players if this happens so I can vision it please……

Weight
I noticed that Horford and Joe Johnson are about the same weight (240). If Al adds an extra 20 to 25 pounds, cant he play the 5?. Seems to me that the reason he cannot play the 5 has to do with his weight not his height( He is the same height as most centers in the NBA.).
Does anyone think this is a good idea?
But why have him do that
when he doesn’t really have the height, long arms or hops of those bigs? Add 25 lbs and he looks like Big Baby—who can’t defend anyone.
big baby is...
fat, yet athletic… fathletic as some may put it. but if al could bulk up 10 pounds of muscle atleast, he would still have his quickness vs other centers, and start becoming a bruiser downlow… i would love that haha
Big Baby held his own against Gasol, Bynum, and Odom
That’s not saying I think Al needs to add those pounds though.
Bet it hit the rim!
He couldn't grow another 3-4 inches to compete on the defensive end....
I don’t think the was that bad to be honest with you.
Bet it hit the rim!
Re-watch the Lakers series
and all those offensive rebounds.
My point was he did what he could for his size
He couldn’t grow 3 or 4 more inches so of course they’d get more rebounds than he would. Otherwise, they’d be underachieving. That being said, on the offensive end, he bullied his way to the basket with all his girth.
Bet it hit the rim!
Somebody had to...
…with all the solid centers the Hawks have signed over the past three years, there simply was no room.
Please, please, please...
let Al Horford at PF mean Josh Smith at C. Please. A dedicated Josh Smith attacking all over the painted area, sounds beautiful.
so basically
Josh at pf and al at c starting(original) and al at pf and zaza at c. yal are correct in that zaza and al play really well together when on the court. so it could work but only if al starts as c and switches up throughout the game

I think the hawks worrying about one on one matchups
too much isn’t the way to go when you want to establish team defense and team offense. The best teams in the league play team D and unselfish basketball no matter who the opponent is. The team that loses the focus of TEAM usually loses the game. The Hawks problem with Orlando was never Dwight by himself
Atlanta will win a championship....someday
Very good points. Since the Hawks haven’t made any significant roster moves, it will be up to Larry Drew to design a team defense that works better than Woodson’s stale always switch.
We may well discover that Woodson's switching worked pretty well
when we expect those guards to have to actually stay in front of someone.
I like mixing Al in the 4 more
Al in the past has played great alongside Zaza. BUT I do not like the idea of moving Al to power as a starter.
