NBA Announces Holiday Schedule (Look Close for the ATL)

Here you go...the holiday schedule....I guess (53) wins, bringing your same roster back, including your FOUR TIME ALL STAR, doesn't warrant the attention you received maybe even a season ago.

See for yourself (thanks, hawks pr!):

THHB great post

I was watching the “special” was doing the same as you, looking closely for a hawks game. Im kinda pissed that the only highlights we got was the loss to OKC. I think we got demoted on MLK day, I mean he is from atlanta right?

I think what pisses me off the most

is that the Knicks and the wizards get a primetime before us. Those teams actually suck and like you said, we did win 53 games and we are getting team back again. Every year the team gets better. I dont know why we are teh only ones that can apparently see this.

hell, they even get a ESPN and TNT game.

and we get stuck with a NBATV.

The NBA can kiss my ass

I don’t care how bad our playoffs were we still return a 53 win team and all we have is a game on NBATV against Sacramento… I’m done

Just to elaborate...

especially if it serves to piss off Josh (like say the All Star snub) and the rest of the team, it certainly isn’t too early to pull out the Rodney Dangerfeld. I’d love to see this team play all year pissed off, with an “us against the world” attitude. We lacked that type of edge and intensity last year, and with our youth up front it’d do us a world of good to have it.

Hawks v King is some serious Must See TV!

Back to the middle of the pack where I knew that we would be. It’s gonna be all Heat, all Thunder all the time. Mark it down. The Hawks are the like tweeners. They used to be cute and cuddly. Now they have a squeaky voice and don’t keep their rooms clean.

Bet it hit the rim!

MLK Day is almost a given being MLK was born here

It most definitely would have been a WOW if we didn’t get at least that day

Atlanta will win a championship....someday

As a Hawks fan I am used to it

This whole TV special to announce these games just wreaks of “The Decision” all over again. It is like sending a message to the rest of the NBA that they don’t matter.

Well for the first 30 min of this special....

it was a Miami Heat special. Im so mad that when they talk about underdogs, they mention LA and boston. Last I checked who did boston get swept by in the season. So to answer your question, it is not to soon. I mean c’mon, people think we might be below the bobcats and everyone in the world says that the bulls are going to finish fourth. So again the answer is no, no one in this country respects this team except the loyal fans.

So throwed that Randy Moss jumpin up couldn't even catch it

its never too early thhb

Hawks are back to being the underdogs. just cause the knicks got stoudemire they are better? and a huge " puhleeese" on miami because I have a strong feeling their going to be a fluke. Boston is aging and Cleveland “cant get right”. whatever. I shoudve expected this but I figured 53 wins and ATLEAST advancing to the second round warranted appreciation.

Knicks got Amare and their better?

I completely agree with you on that statement.

Saving my outrage

For the release of the full national TV schedule next week. That’s when the extent of the dissing shall be known. It is also when I can be sickened by the number of Miami Heat games on ESPN and TNT. I think the main reason I buy league pass is that the lack of variety on the main networks is sickening.

What do we think of this year's team?

I was going to turn this into a full fledged post but I am going to have little time over today and I feel it is relevant now.

What do we think the outlook is for this season’s team? I know it is easy to get washed up into being negative when they don’t make wholesale changes or sign/draft the players that we want. Still the goal in the short term was to return the core of a team that won 53 games last year.

The interesting thing is had Chris Bosh and LeBron James signed in the western conference then the whole perception might have changed. We might be looking at this team as one that could have finished as high as second in the conference. Of course that didn’t happen and when you look at finishing third in your own division it makes it tough to fathom that you could finish third in the whole conference.

Was the Joe Johnson contract a bad thing? Time will tell, but I don’t expect him not to be an All Star this season. Josh Smith and Al Horford should improve. Hopefully we get something out of Marvin Williams and this team has the reigning sixth man of the year in Jamal Crawford. That is nothing to be ashamed of.

I put Orlando at the top followed by Miami then I feel like it might be a crap shoot. Boston is old and will coast through part of the regular season. That is a given. They do remain as a team that could beat anyone in a seven game series. The Bulls are better on paper but we have to see them on the court. The Bucks have my attention as Scott Skiles really impressed me in the playoffs last year but answer me a question as to when was the last time Corey Maggette really made a team better?

If you think back to last year the Washington Wizards were a team that many were picking to finish ahead of the Hawks and it just didn’t work out on the court. Will the Hawks finish third? I don’t know but I expect them to be in the mix. I expect them to be around 50 wins by the time the season is over, and if they are not then you will hear me calling for this team to be broken up by the time the trade deadline rolls around.

Again I apologize for the long comments post but I think it is too easy to get washed up in the negativity of the off season that you forget what we have. It appears that the NBA doesn’t think much of us looking at the Natl schedule but that is ok. With the way the last season ended I am not sure that they should. Still I am not ready to right off that this Hawks team will be any worse than last years.

Personally...

I think the Hawks will be battling for the 3rd, 4th and 5th spots with Boston and Chicago. As mentioned on this site, having Bosh, Wade and James all in one place makes the REST of the Eastern Conference weaker. The top is still the same, but now there is more disparity between the haves and the have-nots.

Miami will be tough, as will Orlando, but Cleveland and Orlando were tough last year. Chicago is improved, but the aforesaid Cleveland, as well as Toronto (even more so), will be dreadful. Boston is a year older, which may not be a good thing for them. The Bucks and Bobcats will be tough (at least to Atlanta), but are we really afraid of any other team? The Knicks? The Sixers? The Wizards? Nah…Not really? The Pacers, Nets and Pistons? Nope…It’s a four team conference (five if Chicago steps up)…

As far as the Hawks themselves, I DO see them improving slightly, not necessarily in wins but in consistency. They are the same team as last year (basically) and have played together for so long it can’t do anything but help them. Plus, the new guys Teague (yes…he’s new in my opinion, for he didn’t get much of a shot next year) and Crawford #2 will add energy to the team off the bench. I feel that we’ll be slightly better on the road, too. It’s hard to improve on 53 wins, but I think it is possible. I would rather them be consistent, though. The Hawks either won by 20 or lost by 20 last year…Frustrating. If we can be more consistent, maybe we won’t lay eggs like against Orlando in the playoffs…

The problem is that I don’t think we matchup well with the top two teams, especially Orlando. Thus, assuming that Orlando and Miami go 1 and 2…I see us bowing out of the playoffs in the second round yet again (though we won’t be swept). Regardless of how much improvement we show during the regular season, all that matters is how we play against the big two (or three if you count Beantown…or four if you count Chi Town)…Who knows? Maybe we’ll figure Orlando out. Maybe Miami will wear themselves down over the course of the season? But I will believe it when I see it…

by Jman781 on Aug 4, 2010 9:35 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm not sold on the Bobcats...

Gerald Wallace is a great player, but he can play at the level he did last year? I’m not buying Tyrus Thomas as a legit starter, and the rest of their bigs are pretty bad. DJ Augustin didn’t exactly make Felton expendable with his player either.

I like the Knicks better with Felton and Stoudamire, especially if Galinari can improve into a legit wing scorer. But as you said, if Teague can step up and demand PG, I like what we got to compete in the meat behind Orlando and Miami, with Boston, Chicago, and perhaps Milwaukee in the 3, 4, 5, 6 spots. That leaves 7 and 8 for the Bobcats, Knicks, Sixers, and anyone else that steps up.

by Mr. Sanchez on Aug 4, 2010 10:06 AM EDT up reply actions

Agree...

We are clearly better than a majority of the Eastern Conference teams. We just are.

I mentioned the Bobcats merely because they seem to give the Hawks fits; we split with them last year and one of our wins was a squeaker in OT…We did win 3/4 against them two years ago, so it may just be a perception error on my part…

Maybe I am stubborn, but I refuse to acknowledge the Knickerbockers until I see them play a bit first!

by Jman781 on Aug 4, 2010 10:19 AM EDT up reply actions

I can see where you are coming from with the Bobcats...

and they could be trouble again. I just think they lost two good pieces with Felton and Chandler, and didn’t replace them, so that would be a step back, and even more so if Gerald Wallace can’t play at that same crazy level, or gets hurt.

And if the Knicks can find a way to add Rudy Fernandez, I like them a lot. They would be crap on D, but hell on O. Felton is a good PG for them, very good. Galinari showed some skills as a wing scorer. A healthy Stoudamire is perfect for that offense and working the pick and roll with Felton. Turiaf adds toughness inside, and Anthony Randolph may or may not go crazy with consistent, 20-30+ minutes of playing time in D’Antoni’s up time system. Add a healthy Azubuike and improved Toney Douglas, and they’ve got some weapons to make a move up the charts. And if they add Fernandez, I think he’d be a 20-25 ppg player there and ideal SG.

by Mr. Sanchez on Aug 4, 2010 10:26 AM EDT up reply actions

Now I'm scared of the Knicks!

If I am going to give the Bobcats credit for being tough against the Hawks, how can I ignore an improved Knicks team that won 3/4 against us last season?

Not really scared of them, but they seem like a good contender for the playoffs…But…They are the Knicks…

by Jman781 on Aug 4, 2010 10:35 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree with both of you

The point I was really trying to make was while the off season might not have went exactly like some might have wanted don’t sleep on the fact that we return a pretty good team. Is it good enough to win the conference? Probably not, but if you want to be overly optimistic then maybe Larry Drew is the difference.

http://www.peachtreehoops.com/

by Kris Willis on Aug 4, 2010 10:39 AM EDT up reply actions

And maybe...

We take the disrespect card and run with it. The team has to be tired of the media and (some) fans bashing them for laying down against Orlando last season. They have to be annoyed that they aren’t considered by many “experts” as a legit contender.

In that vein, here’s to hoping Joe Johnson shows all of his detractors that he really is worthy of a max-contract, at least in year numero uno!

by Jman781 on Aug 4, 2010 10:47 AM EDT up reply actions

I pretty much agree with the above sentiments

Miami essentially replaces Cleveland, Orlando is still Orlando, but after that I don’t see how we are any worse than what we were last year. I think we could pull out the third spot over Boston and Chicago and whoever else rises from the muck. Toronto won’t be a threat and even if the Knicks and Bobcats take a few from us, that’s no different than last year so I don’t see them improving enough to rise from fringe playoff teams to 3rd best in the East.

Here’s to hoping that Larry Drew and Co can bring consistency to our players/team!

Well Shaq's going to the celts...

I guess that “saga” is over. I’m afraid the hawks might tease us again with a great regular season. Right now a great preseason means nothing. A great regular season means little. A great post-season would be great!

I agree that the hawks are goin to bring back a good team this season

They might not have gotten some of the players they needed but they have another young backup in Powell, an improving pointguard in Teague, a possible surface of marv, and a possible gamechanging gameplan and atmosphere with drew. I definently wouldn’t count the hawks out. playing with their backs against the wall suits them. Boston is a mindset and Atleast has the advantage because of their confidence against them. hawks need confidence to beat Orlando and Miami. and of course the gameplan lol

IF YOU CANT ACCEPT LOSING, YOU CANT WIN.

by Hawksgirl on Aug 4, 2010 11:30 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

We diehard Hawks fans don’t respect this team. Why would we expect the national networks or the schedule makers to?

There’s a huge amount of uncertainty around the Hawks due to the new, first time head coach. A lot of us don’t think Woodson was a good coach, but it will take a year or more likely 2 or 3 years before we can judge if Larry Drew is any better. Right now I’d pick the Hawks to win somewhere between 50 and 56 wins and finish 4th or 5th in the conference.

by redwards95 on Aug 4, 2010 11:41 AM EDT reply actions

I respect a 50-56 win team

A team at that level is not one to be over-looked. We don’t know what injuries may occur to what teams. The Hawks were very fortunate last season in that regard. Still I question whether the Celtics can manage the marathon of the regular season and stay in that top 4. No doubt they are a threat if they are healthy when the playoffs start but you won’t see them grinding trying to finish 3rd.

ATL deserve no big exposure

Because it has been a bust 2 years running. No serious change in the makeup of a team, makes one believe that the end will be no better at best.

Hope is what man live by. Hawks bring no hope to fans or foes because they stand still, while everyone else changes around them. Others may get worse, but others may also get better. Hawks, can only hope to stay the same.

The fact that the Hawks aren’t on a significant national broadcast tells you all you need to know about what the league thinks about whether Joe Johnson is really a superstar.

I didn’t read most of this but I’m far from pissed. I’m sure t he NBA just loves empty arenas on national tv!

Not too soon...

I contend that the Hawks could upset the Heat in the Conferences, then take LA to 7 in the Finals… and still be overlooked for the Christmas day game.
