Ball Don't Lie - Power Forward Rankings Josh Smith #7
Kelly Dwyer ranks the top 30 power forwards with Josh Smith checking in at #7. I can't really argue with any of the guys that are in front of him. Dwyer has Smith ranked behind Boozer, Bosh, Dirk, Amare, Duncan, and Gasol.
When compared to the guys in front of him, Josh is the youngest and the one with probably the most growth left in his game.

So according to these rankings
The Hawks don’t have a top 30 point guard
The #4 Shooting Guard in Joe Johnson
The #12 Shooting Guard in Jamal Crawford
The #21 Small Forward in Marvin Williams
The #7 Power Forward in Josh Smith
Can’t really argue with much here in my opinion. Still think that even an older Mike Bibby should have been able to crack the top 30 point guards. All that is left is to see where Al Horford ends up. What do you guys think?

My guess is
They included him with the centers because that is where they think he will start.

It's OK...
but I wonder if Horf would be any higher at PF than C, or if they’d rate him above Smoove at PF.

That is a curious point
Lion is really a power forward, pity we are not finding his potential in that position because of Hawks being cheap.
That is not the point - benching....................
Point is Hawks need a big man to rotate in and out interchangably.
People seem to get hung up on the idea of Smoove or Lion starting or not. Hawks can have same starting rotation, but keep changing and replacing Smoove or Lion with a true big center. Or even start all three (a new big center) and bench Marvin to begin with. Think how many big men Celtics have? Think how many Lakers have? IT is not about starting, it is about depth. And it is to have that big man that can rebound and play defense against big seven footers so that Lion can be relived from that duty.
i'm with you, and want a big that can play 25 minutes a night and rebond more than anything.
That would possibly give us the best frontcourt in the league with the ability to match up with just about anything. It would be amazing.
But even if that happens then Al is still playing most of his minutes at the center position. So he would be a center.
It depends
It is like when Zaza is in, Lion moves to PF position. So it all depends on the player Hawks can get to play that center position, if any one.
Point guard is Hawks unknown, and I take Smoove over several ahead of him
Bibby does not belong on the starting 5 of an NBA team trying to compete to be part of first tier of clubs in the league. The rankings are correct on that point. Actually Bibby did not belong on the club’s starting five even last year, unless he was like 20 pounds lighter. We have Sund to thank for signing Bibster to that three year contract. Think defensive deficiency big time, lack of speed bigger time, and no ability to penetrate any longer biggest time. At best, Bibby is a white chocolate type player now off the bench shooting 3s and giving Teague a break, assuming Teague makes it. At worst, my grand ma out speeds him.
As for Smoove, these guys are joking right. I mean Smoove will outplay Boozer any night. And I take Smoove if I am a club trying to work towards future championships, easy over Stoudemire and the Great Duncan. Clearly Stoudemire can score, but I can not, and won’t pay to build around him or the future. Not to mention, every time I watch Stoudemire, I go to sleep nowadays!!! And as for Duncan, clearly not enough juice left in the tank to carry me to the promise land any more.
Lookout for even greater things from Smoove, see him develop this year into the superstar that he is destined to be. Last year, was but a taste of things to come. The best passing big man in the game past Gasol, the best defensive power forward in the league, a gazelle running with the wind, a jumping jack of the highest caliber athlete in the world, with the most exciting moves ever. Watch him develop a nice midrange jumper as he grows and matures, and better lateral movement as experience will teach him to slow down. This is the Hawks wild card, and the essence of who they are. And a home made product to top it all.
Looking at the rankings
I was a little amazed at how high Smoove could jump up as some of the other power forwards age in the next season or two. Right now I don’t think I would rank him ahead of any of them but he could easily move to top 3 as soon as next season.
That said I want to see continued growth from Smith. After making a ton of progress last year he reverted back to some bad ways in the playoffs. Of course no one played well so we won’t try and pin it all on Smoove. I was most impressed with Josh Smith’s passing ability last year as that was something that I never thought he was that great at. Could be really effective in the offense that Drew is describing.

Let me ask you a question
You are the GM of an NBA franchise, you can choose and pick from amongst Smoove and Dunan and Stoudemire and Boozer, on five year terms right now, which one would you pick???
Sure I would take Smith
All I am saying is that those rankings are for next season. They are not looking past that.

Duncan is a Center
Amare and Boozer may not even last the whole season, and Bosh may be forced to play a bulk of minutes at Center.
