How bad are the Hawks at PG?
Yahoo just did a top 30 point guards and Mike Bibby was not on the list. I find it hard to believe that he did not make the list even at this stage of his career. If the list is looking at just 1 season, then he should be better than at least half the pg's in the league. He has and definitely will made a difference on a 50 win team. If you had a team for the coming season, who would you rather have as your starting PG? Derek Fisher( did not make it), Bibby or Jrue Holiday( made the list)?
To make matters worse, they even had 6 teams with 2 point guards. Yeah he is old and slow, but his playmaking skills is top class. I just find it hard to believe that you can win 50 games without a legit point guard.
What do you think ?

Looking at those three,...
I’d be Jrue all day long. Younger, strong defensively, he’d be ideal as our starting PG next to Joe.
what happened to experience?
I guarantee you if you put Bibby or Fisher on the Philadelphia team, they will win more games.
Probably because Phily could use a veteran in the backcourt...
and better shooting. I bet if you asked Sund or Kupchak to make that swap, they wouldn’t hesitate and would say they improved their team too.

Its hard to argue any of them over bibby except...
Mike Conley and Kyle Lowry. Every one of them do things better than Bibby and they all stay on the floor longer.
Atlanta will win a championship....someday
When you assume at Bibby's age...
his game will further regress, I’d agree. Hopefully Teague or Jamal proves themselves worthy of this list during the year though.
Without looking at the list...
I could probably come up with 30 PGs I would rather have than Bibby. I am not saying that Bibby is absolute trash, but he’s not the reason this team won 50+ games last year…
There were many games last season when I forgot that Bibby was even a Hawk.

I didn't vote on your poll...
because if Bibby isn’t considered a Top 30 PG, it doesn’t mean “he sucks!!!”
It just means there are 30 PGs who are ranked above him. If it was based on shooting, I would have a problem with the list too, but his all around game doesn’t match up well with a lot of other PGs in the league.
I don't understand how being part of a 50 win team
automatically means all of your players are in the Top 30 at their respective positions, and if they aren’t ranked in the Top 30, they suck.

If you are
A Starter
A key part of the team.
The key facilitator
The most important key to the team making the playoffs ( according to the coach)
Finishes games
If you do all this on a 50 win team, then you should be at least a top 30 point guard. My point is that if you replace Bibby with half of the PG on the list, this team will not be better
I thought really hard about Lowry
And I think I agree with it. That’s the only one against whom I would try to make a case for Bibby, at this point. I’d take any of the other 29.
I'm not sure about Conley either...
they have given him every opportunity, and he can’t win the job.
Bibby is a product of a the system
Although he has playmaking ability even at this age of his career, he takes a back seat in terms of offensive plays (apart from 3’s) in system that involved more isolations and drive-to-the-basket kickouts. That in turn doesn’t really mean more stats but his value to the team is more than just stats. That being said he the wrong side of 30 and serves more as a mentor to Jeff Teague than anything, which is good to know since back in the day he mentored a kid by the name of Rajon Rondo

That's a good point.
Would Steve Nash be able to thrive in our offense? He’d probably do ok, but he would be a liability in a lot of situations if his job was to make an entry pass and hope for a kick-out for a three.
Not that Bibby is in the same class as Nash, but it’s a much better comparison than someone like Rondo. The iso-joe is similar to the triangle in that there just isn’t a lot for the point guard to do. Hopefully the new offense will challenge Bibby and he’ll respnd with more production.

Steve Nash would thrive in any offense...
that tends to be the case with guys who are top notch with the handle, passing, and shooting.

True but he wouldn't be able to do anything without the ball
Everyone seems to think that if our frontcourt got more stuff ran that played to their strengths that that would increase their production. I’m not sure why more people don’t think that could happen with Bibby.
Also Bibby does have top notch handle, passing and shooting
It’s is athleticism that is in question, not his skills.
unfortunately, very few people in this blog appreciate his skills
you, me and hawksdawgs.
Those things aren't the issue
I definitely appreciate his ball handling, his passing, and his 3pt shooting, but the man can’t play defense and that’s what hurts this team more than anything related to offense. I’d take a slight decrease in offensive production at the point for a large increase in defensive production every day of the week, and that means that just about every one of those players listed above Bibby would be an overall improvement.
I don’t care if he is on the team, but I do think it’s time we start looking for towards the future at the point gaurd position. Maybe that means Teague, maybe it doesn’t, but we can’t sit around waiting for Bibby to retire to find out who the next one will be or we will end up with another set of Lue, Claxton, and Johnson.

Fact.
And while he's a good ball handler, passer, and shooter...
he also can not create enough space to get his shot off without help, isn’t quick enough to penetrate the paint and turn his handle and passing into points. It’s not that he’s bad, he’s just not the same player he was 5-10 years ago. He’s a good player, similar to Derek Fisher. He’s not gonna hurt you, cause he’s a smart, effective player. But he’s needs the right guys alongside him to allow his skills to show.
Agreed

I will say that I think you guys are sleeping on him a little bit.
There are plenty of players that would be worse for the Lakers than Fisher, but Bibby is not one of them. His passing and shooting are better, and he’s got just as much character.
He’s got plenty of playoff exploits under his belt as well, and hed have a ring if not for some ridiculous officiating.
Not bad
Confident shooter, but knows when to dish. Ton of effort on D, doubly so after making a mistake, which I like to see. Takes some risks though that work with inferior competition but may not work so well against tougher opponents.
Great vision, good shooter from all ranges, good defender.
