Jason Collins Re-Signs with the Atlanta Hawks

Via a Hawks Press release the signing is now official. Jason Collins is back with the Atlanta Hawks

"We’re excited to welcome Jason back to the team," said Hawks head coach Larry Drew. "He’s a veteran presence in the locker room, and adds experienced depth to the frontcourt. Jason has worked hard in the offseason, and with his knowledge of the system we’re implementing, he’ll continue to be a valuable contributor to our club."

The move gives the Hawks 12 players just one short of the NBA minimum of 13. Per team policy financial terms of the deal were not released.

This move feels like a "rounding out the roster move". I would have much preferred someone with a little more upside to them. The Hawks seemed to feel that Collins positive influence in the locker room was valuable enough to bring him back.

Exit Question: Who will be #13?

well since Collins is back

There is no need for randolph morris. we need to try and get another sf

IF YOU CANT ACCEPT LOSING, YOU CANT WIN.

oh and by the way

I do not agree with this signing. we should have signed someone younger. I understand the “wisdom” and “maturity” but we obviously need younger legs

IF YOU CANT ACCEPT LOSING, YOU CANT WIN.

Josh Boone, among others?...

and the exit answer best not be Mario West.

Come on, Mr. S

…you know you want Mario on John Wall…you NEED him on John Wall….

If Mario was too expensive when camp broke last year

the he will probably be too expensive to start this year. Don’t count out a mid season pick up though.

I'll admit, I laughed on that one...

and I said none of that Mr. S business. You can call me Tiberius.

I really can't handle the truth

If the truth is that we’re using the exact same roster as last season, only it costs much more.

by Bronn on Jul 29, 2010 5:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I want Mario West to finalize this roster

Besides my stated bias, if for no other reason than if they don’t sign West then I’m not sure I will know who this team is. I mean, we need this team to be the same as last year or we might not make it out of the lottery!!! We might not win more than 13 games total!!!! I’m scared Sarge….hold me…

I was hoping for Boone or Shaq

But I figure Shaq is still overpricing himself and Josh Powell may have made Boone redundant.

Hopefully #13 is a long, athletic SF. I don’t care if it’s a guy from summer league as long as it isn’t Mario.

What this move accomplishes

Is to make me embarrassed to be a season ticket holder of this organization. Collins must be great in the locker room because he’s almost never on the court.

by Evil Dallas on Jul 29, 2010 4:55 PM EDT reply actions

I agree with you here

What I don’t want to see is Collins to sit for 30 games and then when we play Orlando be ran out there in the first quarter to pick up 3 fouls in 30 seconds. If he is going to be on the roster and you ever have any plans ever to use him then you need to give him some time sporadically throughout the season.

by Kris Willis on Jul 29, 2010 5:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Regardless of how he's used

We could have much better utilized any minute that Collins plays by signing someone younger and with more upside in the hopes of getting lucky and finding an actual useful player. Collins is possibly the worst player we could have signed to fill that spot on the roster.

by Bronn on Jul 29, 2010 5:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

and that is exactly what I said in the above article. I don’t like signing a player if we don’t ever have any intentions of playing him.

http://www.peachtreehoops.com/

by Kris Willis on Jul 29, 2010 6:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Hopefully he'll get some REAL minutes

While I’m disappointed we’re going with Collins, I still think he can help in the right situations. Rotation management was one of Woody’s biggest weaknesses. So we never had any legitimate look at Collins until Woody was forced to play Cheesy in the Magic series. I hope Collins is in as good a shape as he’s being advertised. And maybe Collins playing under Drew in the scrimmages will give him an edge in learning the system.

One of our main points this summer.

Ugh...

Don’t remind me. I was so excited when Whiteside was available. I was a little bummed we didn’t take him with our 1st round pick (although Jordan Crawford’s growing on me now)…But just think, we used that money to sign guys like Powell and Collins!

well

all we can do is wit for the 2011 draft and hope Sund learned his lesson.

by hawves on Jul 29, 2010 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions

To follow up on that

If you keep someone on your roster all year to use when facing Dwight Howard, then use him. He played 6 minutes in the Orlando series. Might as well have let him use all his fouls if that was the plan. Pulling the plug after 6 minutes showed 2 things, that Collins wasn’t ready to contribute and that Woodson couldn’t stick with a plan.

I feel sorry for Larry Drew. They’ve given him the same roster with only Jordan Crawford and Josh Powell as additions near the end of the bench and they expect him to go further to be considered successful. The odds are stacked against him.

by Evil Dallas on Jul 29, 2010 5:45 PM EDT up reply actions

That clearly showed how unprepared we were to play Orlando in my opinion

The fact that some of those 6 minutes came at the expense of Al Horford once again shows how vastly unprepared and unthought out our game plan was going into that series.

honestly

I’ll be fine with a .500 season. because…
1. Larry Drew is new at the head coaching job, and even if he knows the team well from being an assistant, I’ll cut him some slack.

2.

I think our biggest issues last year had to do with bad coaching and poor decisions

That’s why I think moving Woody was the most important offseason priority. AND, if Drew is what I hope he’ll be, I think less then 50 wins would be a disappointment.

by axhfan on Jul 29, 2010 10:38 PM EDT up reply actions

with Ax on this one

it seem like the biggest problem was Woody. I’m sure they asked Drew what he thought about Collins and there must be something there…I guess. He was pretty good in his NJ years. all we need is for him to bang in the box and grab rebounds. ( keeping fingers crossed) This team last year was suppose to be a contender in the ECF, as it was. So the roster wasn’t “gaabage” …it must have been the coach. Maybe Marvin is better than we think, maybe Drew is going to get in Josh’s a$$ when he screws up, and maybe they will have some actual plays that use the other 4 players on the floor with JJ

What a wasteland this is becoming

Washington re-signed Josh Howard for 1 year, we could have done that. Fesenko is still out there and we go with this Collins guy who has no upside and no presence when on the floor. #13 will hopefully be a some old washed up cheap guy, probably just bring Joe Smith back and be done with this its too much hard work

by formerlyknowna on Jul 29, 2010 5:58 PM EDT reply actions

Josh Howard wouldn't have helped much

He won’t even be on the court for another 8 months. Much less contribute.

Pros/Cons

Pros: Maybe Drew utilizing Collins correctly (or at all) will help his production, He knows Drew’s system from practicing on the second squad, veteran presence (I guess?)

Cons: Another year of Jason Collins

Re: Pros

This is the only remaining hope to hang on to. Maybe Drew can use Collins efficiently and in small amounts. If not, then we’re DOOMED!!!!

The sad thing is...

That Sund, on 680 The Fan this morning, said that they are happy with this team and will not go over the luxury tax (well…duh).

He said that he wants to follow the Detroit and San Antonio molds of bringing back the same teams over and over in order to build a championship team “together.” He mentioned that no wholesale changes would be made until next offseason, assuming that we don’t improve…He feels that we are only going to get better because the players are so familiar with each other…

I have a lot of counters to this rationale (like Tim Duncan is pretty awesome), but there it is…He is intentially bringing back the same team and will not spend any more $$$$. We knew this, but it just hurts to hear it.

by Jman781 on Jul 29, 2010 6:07 PM EDT reply actions

I believe that has been the plan from the beginning

That in particularly is why Jamal’s name hasn’t come up in any trade rumors. Do the Hawks as a franchise over value their own players? I think that is a legit question. Do they as owners and management look at this team and think that after another year of development from Josh Smith and Al Horford that they now match up with Orlando or Miami?

http://www.peachtreehoops.com/

by Kris Willis on Jul 29, 2010 6:12 PM EDT up reply actions

In fairness...

To the Hawks, I can see the argument that a major shake-up was not necessary. Some of our secondary players like Bibby, Williams and Crawford and our role players like Evans, Collins (okay what role?), etc. could’ve been swapped out without disrupting the apple-cart…

by Jman781 on Jul 29, 2010 6:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I am not arguing for a major shake up

but as Bronn has pointed out above we are basically bringing back the same team at a much more expensive price. That would be fine in my opinion if you were already on top of the conference. I think it is something else though when you are fourth and a team like Miami makes moves like they have.

Don’t get me wrong. I will pull just as hard for the team Jason Collins included as I did last year. I just question that they really think this group could improve in a years time with no major acquisitions and become the top team in the Eastern Conference. I don’t believe they can really think that

http://www.peachtreehoops.com/

by Kris Willis on Jul 29, 2010 7:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the FO believes it will come together

If not this year then soon. We do have a young team that can improve, so there is a legitimate strategy in locking up a core and letting them develop.

I can’t remember the article, but it has been covered how hard it is to keep a nucleus together and try this. Typically a key player gets too old before the others peak, players are lost in free agency, someone gets injured, ect.

by axhfan on Jul 29, 2010 10:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Another possibility is...

they are poor at evaluating the value of players. See Josh Childress.

by Mr. Sanchez on Jul 29, 2010 7:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Does this close the door on Shaq?

Probably not but I am of the opinion that he is going to have to knock on the Hawks door and say I will play for around the vet minimum.

http://www.peachtreehoops.com/

by Kris Willis on Jul 29, 2010 7:32 PM EDT reply actions

Actually...

In the interview I heard on the radio with Sund, he got kind of testy when the issue of Shaq was brought up. He really didn’t want to talk about it. Interestingly, he immediately went into the team not exceeding the luxury tax…Draw your own conclusions, but I didn’t get a strong Shaq vibe…

Call me crazy, but I kind of like the idea of Shaq on the Hawks…

Ironic...

considering after signing Joe they talked about how willing they’d be to go into the luxury tax area.

by Mr. Sanchez on Jul 29, 2010 10:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Theres a difference

Between willing to pay the tax and willing to overpay, what would be, a role player. No one is offering Shaq the full MLE, which I think is what it would take to bring him to Atlanta. There’s still a stigma with this team, not to mention there’s still a chance O’neal could find a “legit” contender.

by axhfan on Jul 29, 2010 10:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I never said anything about that...

it was solely on this comment…

I don't mind the 12th man being a smart/ good locker room guy

We’re going to make a trade, but either way, I don’t see why this signing is offensive to anyone. He’s smart and experienced. We don’t need anyone flashy as our 12th man.

A perfect picture of Collins in his natural habit

I gotta say, the only good thing about the Hawks’ roster inactivity is that I don’t have to buy the new NBA 2K11 for the roster update.

Let's go Mets!

I quit

That’s it for me fellow Hawk fans I’ve had it with Sund. The best moves we could make this summer was to sign Joe to a mega contract, where we can’t get help then we sign Powell who is no better than Pachullia then to top it off we bring back Collins !!! At least ASG could give us some K-Y jelly before they got started. We don’t have anything to be excited about for next season everyone around us had Christmas & we got a Pet Rock, Sund get yo f—-ing head out of your @ss !!!

The last time we had a summer of decisions this bad . . .

I didn’t renew my season tickets (I intentionally waited to see if they were stupid enough to draft Shelden Williams and they did). This year I was already renewed so I can’t do the same thing, but barring one of three miracles I’m done giving thousands of dollars annually to the ASG. The miracles would be either the team gelling into real playoff force under Larry Drew, the team getting sold to new ownership who can either spend or plan like winners, or Joe Johnson getting traded by the deadline followed by Atlanta landing a stud PG or C in the draft. All are long shots, but without one of those happening I don’t have the hope necessary to drive down to Philips Arena in 2011.

They could resign Joe Smith ,or Randolph Morris, or Mario West or
pick Summer league help , Aminu, Hendrix, Glider and a couple of others had good stats, or go for Free Agent , Hopefully one for under 1.5 Million a year The 10+ vet Salary being around 1,475,000 for 10 year plus players or try to get a younger player for under $1 million or sign a undrafted rookie for the Minimum.

Jason Collins is a low risk, low reward player. The Hawks know what they’re getting from him and it’s not much. It might have been better to have taken a higher potential player from the D-League.
