Can we make an offer for Rudy Fernandez?

http://blog.oregonlive.com/behindblazersbeat/2010/07/trail_blazers_looking_for_a_fa.html

A first round pick and the trade exception?  Mo Evans for Fernandez straight up?  Jamal for Fernandez and Pryzbilla perhaps?  Bibby, Mo, and the trade exception for Fernandez and Andre Miller?  Smoove and a future first for Fernandez and LeMarcus Aldridge?  As some may recall, I've long been a huge fan of Rudy Fernandez and his game.  Good shooter, good creator, and I'd love him next to Joe on the wings.  Their desire to expediate the deal might be a problem considering ASG's general slothness in decisions, but damn if I ain't intrigued by the posibilities.  Of the deals above, I like Jamal Crawford for him and Pryzbilla (include a pick if needed).

It makes the team younger

…which is good…but why lose a nice chip like JC1’s expiring? I’d be inclined to moving Marvin and the exception for Rudy and Prysbilla. Play Smoove at the 3, or move JJ to the 3, and now you have a defined backup at every position

Please don't mention Smoove at the 3...

and big P is expiring at the end of the year too, so it’s not like he wouldn’t provide a nice expiring contract of his own. The JC for JP and RF deal gives us that big, strong defensive C we lack (if he’s healthy), and Fernandez replaces Crawford as 6th man. Could still use a 3rd PG, but we’d still have enough room under the cap to go get Will Bynum, or maybe Earl Watson since it’d be a guy on the end of the bench.

And Fernandez just might be good enough to allow Marvin to become a 6th man and allow Joe play a less physically demanding spot at SF. Hell, with the way those two handle the ball, you could probably use them both as a big backcourt alongside Marvin waiting for the corner 3, and Smoove/Horford working the lane.

Thank God

Marvin should be the first to be dealt….stop throwing in Jamal Crawford and Smith…and yes you CAN play Smoove at the 3.

I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.

That's too much of a shake up...

Once the ASG realized that JR Rider would not be coming back with Rudy, they would decline…

Which one, because I tossed a few possibilities out there...

and imo, none is that big of a shakeup (except for Smoove/Aldridge, or maybe the one with Bibby/Miller).

I actually like some of those options above...

My jab was more directed at the doggedness of the ASG. They seem utterly unwilling to bring on new pieces…Thus, my joke was implying that if the players coming back aren’t re-hashes of failed signings/trades of yore, then they won’t make the move…

Now that that is out of the way, if I got choose one of your options (assuming they are all viable) I choose Smoove (and pick) for Rudy and Aldridge. Why? Because I simply am not a Josh Smith fan…Yes, he is crazy talented, but I just don’t think he plays the way he should…He frustrates me as much as he excites me…

I could elaborate, but this isn’t a Josh Smith post…If we could turn him into a legit big who can play center (thus moving Al to PF) and a playmaker with a good stroke, I am all for it…

I'd go with the Ja. Crawford deal

It’s doubtful that he can sustain the level of production he put up last year , which was a career year in just about every single major offensive category, and I’m not ready to give up on Josh Smith just yet. We have a younger and cheaper while not yet fully polished replacement in Jo Crawford and big P’s expiring would replace Ja Crawford’s expiring.

Letting Rudy take minutes at the 2 while moving JJ to the 3 for stretches seems like a good move to me. Maybe even let Smith play the 5 while Horford mans the 4 during those same stretches and things could get wicked fun.

There's something to...

Sticking Smoove at C. What makes me cringe is his inability to realize that if he honed his skills near the hoop and stopped trying to take as many jumpers, he’d be a force…Putting him in the middle would almost force him to stay close® to the hope where his athleticism could truly shine…I and I am adament in my belief that Horford is a great PF, not a C.

But I digress…Mr. Sanchez, I would be very happy with Rudy on the team.

I think Jamal is the most realistic too...

he gives them an instant offense 6th man behind Roy (unless they think Bayless is filling that role), a somewhat local kid being from Seattle, and end of the year they can either let the deal expire or use Paul Allen’s deep pockets to resign him, since they’ve never shown a fear of the luxury tax. I doubt they want to give up Pryzbilla, but maybe they don’t mind moving him.

Sign a 3rd PG like Earl Watson, or preferably Sherron Collins/other rookie that can spend time in the DLeague or push Teague.
Bibby/Teague/Signing
Joe/Rudy/Jo Crawford
Marvin/Mo/Joe
Smoove/Marvin/Powell
Al/Pryzbilla/Zaza

That’d be your 13, maybe add a young F behind Marvin and Smoove for depth and to rotate with the 3rd PG on the Utah D League team. And Fernandez/Pryzbilla is slightly cheaper than Crawford at around $8.5m vs. $10m, so it allows my desired players 13 and 14 to not put us over the tax.

What do Contador, Nadal, the Spanish Soccer team, and Rudy Fernandez have in common?

Yes, they are all from Spain! (Well…Duh).

But notice the first three are on top of their sports…Let’s cash in while Spaniards are dominating!

Unlikely To Happen

My Thinking is that he is most likely headed to Celtics or Knicks. Celtics because they can offer a big like Davis (Maybe Perkins?) or Sheed and a couple of other spare parts for RF and Joel Pryz. The Knicks are in there too because they can offer a capable starter SG in Chandler (he plays alot better as a 2 than a 3) which the Blazers need.

I like the idea of rudy coming here

I dislike the idea of smoove being traded or moved to the 3. through only position I see smoove moving to is C. He could learn more discipline down there banging with the big guys and use his skills better at the rim and stay in the paint. I would say jamal Crawford and exception.

Too late

Fernandez would have been a good plan while letting Joe go elsewhere. With Joe signed we don’t have the minutes at SG to keep Rudy happy. If you don’t give him an expanded role then he’d just be a rental on his way back to Spain.

A backup SG change isn’t going to help this team. Improvement would come from PG and 3rd rotation big (Zaza actually gets closer to 4th big minutes) if the ASG would spend (or draft not sell off) to help shore up these positions. We’ll see if Jeff Teague can see major minutes this year in hopes of limiting our defensive liabilities.
