The Peachtree Hoops Podcast: The Joe Johnson Contract and do you believe Hawks Management?

The Peachtree Hoops Podcast rolls along through Day Two of the NBA Free agency period. Chris Craft and Kris Willis join me to discuss:

  • Michael's Cunningham's article on management's explanation for the max offer to Joe.
  • Do we believe them and what most likely to happen
  • Will the Hawks bring in a big man to satisfy Al Horford...and what does that do to the lineup...will somebody be traded?
  • The free agent market...are most guys staying put and what does that mean to a certain divisional competitor in South Florida?
  • Who is most likely to leave around the league?
  • Finally, we ask the question...who is a better get at this point Joe Johnson or Gilbert Arenas?

Tune in below, comment, and place your bets!

Joe vs Arenas is a disgrace to Joe...

their production the last few years has been nowhere near comparable. Arenas has multiple knee injuries, while Joe has been relatively healthy. I agree Joe may decline, and may do it soon, but it’s not nearly as likely as Arenas’ decline (or failure to regain his past production since he already has declined considerably). Joe just turned 29, Arenas is 28, so the age isn’t a big difference. And while Joe may have mouthed off about lackluster fan support (and no one would disagree with him on that point), his off the court issues have also been a far cry from Arenas with the gun incident and multiple other off the court distractions.

That it is even a question is insane to me.

We have no choice but to believe them.

Because if they don’t really have this plan then they are imbeciles beyond even the worst recent NBA franchises. It may not be the worst contract ever, but in terms of the status of the player, size of the contract, and resources/status of the team, it’s pretty darn bad.

So it’s good to hear they have a plan and they apparently intend to spend money and/or make trades to do what it takes to move this team to the upper echelon.

That said, what has not been addressed is the chemistry of the remaining group, not least of which is Joe’s oft-mentioned resistance to truly integrating the younger players. Is that going to happen now, because Larry Drew will demand it? Is Joe ok with that?

The worst ever talk is nuts...

he’s not even the worst Hawks contract (see Speedy Claxton or Blair Rasmussen, or the most obvious answer, offering Jon Koncak a salary higher than Magic, Larry, or Michael in the late 80s). For current contracts, see Gilbert Arenas, Reshard Lewis, Eddy Curry, among others. Has Jerome James deal expired yet? Because if I’m thinking of the worst ever, he, Koncak, and Arenas have got to be above Joe’s deal.

hey what time does this start.

and yeah no joe over arenas

and i am inclined to believe them depending on what they do this off season. I have heard on more than one occasion that there are locker room issues and those need to be addressed. There needs to be a respect for all players and all roles. And there needs to be outspoken leader in the locker room and if we don’t get one of those this off season we are going to be in the same boat.

An outspoken respected leader.

Can Larry Drew add Alonzo Mourning to the staff?...

or is he with the Heat for life?

And I’m of the opinion that Smoove or Marvin (or both) are going to be dealt.

Last I heard

Zo was still the president of the player’s union

by axhfan on Jul 2, 2010 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Was about to say...

he can’t be the player rep, because he’s not a player. And Billy Hunter is still the head man.

I didn’t know Mo Evans was a VP though.

JJ is superior to Arenas in so many ways

Do you see any one lining up for Arenas? I did not think so. I just came back from Chicago, where the newspapers are abuzz with Lebron News. If they don’t get LeBron, they are laser focused on JJ, not to mention another free agent, but JJ is in every scenario they have.
Also, remember JJ never been injured, Arenas is damaged goods.

No doubt JJ is not in the first tier of free agents to have. Lebron, Dirk, D-Wade, Josh
But is firmly at top of second tier, Boozer, Stoudemire, JJ

If, and that is a big if, we are going to add a big man in addition to JJ, then the strategy makes sense. Keep JJ. Otherwise, you will see Lion move away next year. He does not want to play center. So the question is whether the ASG will in fact try to improve the team beyond the draft and keeping JJ. I am worried when I read Sund say he is just focused on JJ for now. Why? Why can he not think about multiple options. Keep JJ and what are options to help Lion.

If they're telling the *truth*

It looks like we’re about to go to war with Dwight Howard and the Magicians…

Joe is a Beast
Al is a Beast
Smoove is a MONSTER!

Shaq in Atlanta?!?

…there may have been a shift in management philosophy if the rumors about us going after Biedrens are true since that would just be an effort to make Al happy (and eventually re-signed)…and Shaq is supposedly (per 3D) choosing between Boston and Atlanta which i’d love, even at age 40 or whatever he is

by R.J. Smith on Jul 2, 2010 2:27 PM EDT reply actions

Shaq says he'll stay in Cleveland

for one more season

...in dixie land i'll take my stand to root for Atlanta

by southman on Jul 2, 2010 3:19 PM EDT up reply actions

yes, it's called Sports Center

...in dixie land i'll take my stand to root for Atlanta

by southman on Jul 2, 2010 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions

i wonder why Shaq would stay in Cavs land if Lebron moves on

Hawks are a much better fit for him. Even though he is extremely slow, i still believe he will bring value. ASG should try that.

by ATLpaul on Jul 2, 2010 6:52 PM EDT up reply actions

he wouldn't stay w/out 'Bron

…so i’d guess that thursday’s 9pm ridiculousness will also have a major impact on where the Daddy will end up …and Shaq’s biggest impact would be in the locker room and at the gate

by R.J. Smith on Jul 7, 2010 2:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Management may know something we don't

Remember, there is a new collective bargaining agreement coming up. Salary cap rules, luxury tax rules, and revenue sharing (all of which suck in the NBA) may be drastically changed in the next couple years. That may be one reason why ASG is suddenly willing to become a tax team. Maybe they know it’s only temporary.

Magic want Boozer

The Magic have been offering Marcin Gortat, Brandon Bass, the expiring contract of Vince Carter to interested teams. The Jazz may also have interest in a sign-and-trade for J.J. Redick. They still need a shooter to replace Kyle Korver……..Maybe we could do a 3-way and put Marvin in the mix and get Gortat or Bass

by Cmart34 on Jul 2, 2010 3:48 PM EDT reply actions

i don’t think Bass really played this year. and Gortat didn’t look like the center I would trade away starting player for (even if he shouldn’t be starting)

by RealSquawk on Jul 2, 2010 6:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I really feel like the hawks are going to have to do something extra amazing in order for us to be a contender. We are going to have to take some risk in order to move in some serious competitive pieces if Joe signs this contract because what it does more than anything is put a ceiling on or ability to compete for a championship year out to year out. Once Joe starts to decline we are going to be pretty log jammed in what we can do.

So its now or never once he signs. Players will have to be moved. and chances taken.

by RealSquawk on Jul 2, 2010 6:30 PM EDT reply actions

I think if we sign JJ

We actually are not that far away from winning the East. I trult believe Hawks are one respectable big man away from truly contending for a conference and world championship. The trick is getting that one good big man, and have a 4 man rotation of Lion, Smoove, Zaza and the new body for center and power forward positions.

by ATLpaul on Jul 2, 2010 6:55 PM EDT up reply actions

is lion horford? lol

And you can’t be taking into account the fact that the east is going to be looking a lot different and a lot more competitive.

1. you have potential superstars joining together possibly
2. you have superstars from the west migrating over here possibly.

the east will be more competitive and unless we are aggresive and adding some serious proven pieces we will be left behind with joe or not

by RealSquawk on Jul 2, 2010 7:01 PM EDT up reply actions

The East will be easier this year

Boston and Orlando won’t be as good

The Nets and Knicks would not be able to immediately field a competitive team around any superstars they get

The Heat, if they do get three superstars, will have ZERO depth and will still be lacking in two key positions

Chicago is the one that could potentially become a vastly superior team, but that depends a lot on who they get, the player’s health, and whether they can fill out a competent roster rather then just a starting 5.

by axhfan on Jul 2, 2010 7:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I just heard on ESPN

That D-Wade is seriously considering Cows. This really messes up the Pat Riley plans for Heat. If that is true, it will be very interesting to see where LeBron goes. If LeBRon and D-Wade end up in Chicago, there should be something illegal about that.

by ATLpaul on Jul 2, 2010 7:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Chicago would be able to take Bosh in that instance....

But since he’s pulling a Horford and wants to play the 4 and not 5, it doesn’t make sense for us to worry about it I guess…

You tried your best and you failed miserably. The lesson is 'never try'...

by NaGaNole on Jul 2, 2010 8:01 PM EDT up reply actions

You are right

East will indeed be very different. It will be one of the most interesting years in some for NBa. Yes Al is Lion, because he does everything with that heart.

by ATLpaul on Jul 2, 2010 7:50 PM EDT up reply actions

i was just making sure I kind of like that nickname

Boss Simba Mustafa Lion

then josh smith is what scar?

by RealSquawk on Jul 2, 2010 8:04 PM EDT up reply actions

not the best comparison my bad

by RealSquawk on Jul 2, 2010 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Smoove is my hero :)

i think Hawks are lucky to have two young big men like Smoove and Lion. i would keep them for ever. And if Teague develops, and Drew can coach Marvin and run screen plays and JJ and Crawford square bombing from outside, what a team. Just add a big man….
