GAME THREAD: Summer League 2010 - Game 1 - Atlanta Hawks vs Memphis Grizzlies

The Hawks kick off Summer League Action tonight, 10:30 ET, against the Memphis Grizzlies. The game will be available for viewing on ESPN3.com or via NBA.com's Summer League Broadband Package

Jeff Teague will be headlining a Hawks Summer Team that includes first round pick Jordan Crawford and second round selections Sergiy Gladyr and Pape Sy. This will also be our first look at potentially the Hawks new offense in the Larry Drew era. Brand new Hawks assistant coach Lester Conner will be coaching the team.

Drew promises to turn Teague loose in this Summer League Team and all eyes will be on him to see how he does in running his own team.

We will be updating all of the action in the comments section of this open thread so be sure and stop by and join in on the fun.

Okay, I'm sold

Gotta see exactly what the deal is with Pape Sy. Not that we’ll see him in Atlanta any time soon.

I'm not filled with confidence in my purchase, though

…I am trying to watch the 10pm LAC/WAS game and it’s still asking me to standby

by The Human Highlight Blog on Jul 12, 2010 10:24 PM EDT up reply actions

It does that sometime

There is a small delay over real time. Just think about how many times you will get to replay these Hawks games over and over. :)

Predictions on Starting Lineup??

Teague, Crawford, Luke Jackson, James Augustine, Randolph Morris

my picks

http://www.peachtreehoops.com/

by Kris Willis on Jul 12, 2010 10:22 PM EDT reply actions

Randolph Morris in the starting line-up

Surely, surely, we had a better use for the starting position on the summer league team. No?

by Bronn on Jul 12, 2010 10:45 PM EDT reply actions

Second pick in the draft

At least we’re not the only ones making Sheldon Williams-esque selections.

by Bronn on Jul 12, 2010 10:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I kind of like it

There’s something about the complete lack of crowd noise so you can hear every squeak on the floor and every dribble making think of college pick-up games. Guess I miss that a little.

by Bronn on Jul 12, 2010 10:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Liking Crawford so far.

Looks like he has some good awareness. Loved seeing him follow that one jumper. Almost threw it down. Couple crisp passes.

by Duff_Man on Jul 12, 2010 10:53 PM EDT reply actions

I think Trey Glider is #18

He seems to be everywhere defensively.

by Bronn on Jul 12, 2010 10:54 PM EDT reply actions

I think he has a good chance to stick

Has good size, played pretty good in Orlando Summer League

by Kris Willis on Jul 12, 2010 10:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Try Glider got the assist on the alley-oop.

Very very early, and haven’t seen enough to draw conclusions, but I’m actually liking him so far.

by Bronn on Jul 12, 2010 10:59 PM EDT reply actions

Hawks pretty quick up and down the floor

This Grizzlies team is an athletic bunch also

by Kris Willis on Jul 12, 2010 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions

If Teague can play D with a little more discipline

I think he could help out the Hawks defensively in a major way.

by xavip on Jul 12, 2010 11:00 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Teague looks good...aggressive

Crawford likes to shoot and everyone else looks like summer league material.

Would like to see Gladyr shoot.

by Garrison Hayes on Jul 12, 2010 11:11 PM EDT reply actions

There's really nothing happening

Hawks had a very chaotic play set that resulted in Pape Sy traveling as he attempted to get rid of the ball, and going back down the other end, a drive resulted in a foul. I don’t know who’s shooting, and the announcers say it was Gladyr committing the foul but I think it had to be Augustine.

by Bronn on Jul 12, 2010 11:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Pape Sy

He doesn’t look so good. He’s long, but about as raw as a player can be…even in the context of summer league basketball.

by The Human Highlight Blog on Jul 12, 2010 11:12 PM EDT reply actions

That last shot from Jordan Crawford looked very much like Jamal Crawford.

by Bronn on Jul 12, 2010 11:23 PM EDT reply actions

Yes, sir...

..time to trade Jamal, Marvin, and Mike for…ummm…something?

by The Human Highlight Blog on Jul 12, 2010 11:25 PM EDT up reply actions

30-18, now?

Aminu with some nice touch around the basket.

by Bronn on Jul 12, 2010 11:24 PM EDT reply actions

It's a solid strategy except,

They are collapsing on him when he drives in and he is probably being asked to work on being a distributor in this new offense.

by The Human Highlight Blog on Jul 12, 2010 11:26 PM EDT up reply actions

so OJ Mayo is going to play SG now...

..as the Grizz look to lock up a summer league title.

by The Human Highlight Blog on Jul 12, 2010 11:26 PM EDT reply actions

Ok--he's back to the point...

..still…he could score 40 in this game in he wanted.

by The Human Highlight Blog on Jul 12, 2010 11:27 PM EDT up reply actions

What is OJ doing playing?

People want to say the kid has an ego…. From all I’ve read and seen, the kid just loves basketball. I’m sure he doesn’t have to be playing in Summer League.

Yep.

by Fan Scribe Chris on Jul 12, 2010 11:26 PM EDT reply actions

Started at the Point

They want to get a look at him playing point guard

http://www.peachtreehoops.com/

by Kris Willis on Jul 12, 2010 11:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Because they don't like Conley JR...

correct. Trying to mold Mayo into a PG since they don’t have one, and he’s a bit short for SG.

by Mr. Sanchez on Jul 13, 2010 8:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Playing the point...

…working on that part of his game for the team. And I completely agree with your note there.

by The Human Highlight Blog on Jul 12, 2010 11:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Ugh

Good D from Crawford there to prevent the transition basket, but Aminu couldn’t prevent the score.

Preeeeetty stroke

But we all knew that right? Love that draft pick y’all.

by Fan Scribe Chris on Jul 12, 2010 11:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

Too bad he’s not going to get any playing time this year.

by Bronn on Jul 12, 2010 11:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah... maybe after the All-Star break

We’ll see if Jamal Crawford is even around after the break depending on the standings.

by Fan Scribe Chris on Jul 12, 2010 11:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought we were going to see some of Sergiy Gladyr

So far, he’s been in for like 3 minutes where he didn’t take a shot.

Too many turnovers, though defense not too bad

I don’t have the numbers but I bet the Grizzlies hold an advantage on the boards

http://www.peachtreehoops.com/

by Kris Willis on Jul 12, 2010 11:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Rapid Reactions

1) Trey Gilder might be a nice player if he could shoot.
2) Jordan Crawford is a nice player and he’s not afraid to do some work on defense.
3) OJ Mayo really is above the Summer League
4) Pape Sy looks like a waste of a draft pick
5) James Augustine is Zaza in a lot of bad ways.

by Bronn on Jul 12, 2010 11:34 PM EDT reply actions

Augustine didn't look bad in Orlando

Granted he hasn’t been great tonight

http://www.peachtreehoops.com/

by Kris Willis on Jul 12, 2010 11:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Aminu deserves a mention as well

He is being active around the basket, one of the few guys converting for Jeff Teague

http://www.peachtreehoops.com/

by Kris Willis on Jul 12, 2010 11:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Augustine

He makes me think of like…you know how Zaza tries some stuff that shouldn’t work for him but sometimes does? Like that behind the back pass or the bounce passes in traffic, things like that?

Augustine looks like he’s trying that stuff and it just ain’t workin.

by Bronn on Jul 12, 2010 11:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I really hate comparing Jordan Crawford to Jamal Crawford

Because it feels like I’m doing it just based on their names, but he really does have a lot of Jamal in his game.

Randolph just hasnt improved

by dkrib on Jul 12, 2010 11:56 PM EDT reply actions

As far as Greivis

I would still like to see him play PG in Memphis if possible… If defense is the problem, he can cross-match. I think his size can be an asset. You can tell he has a PG’s mentality. ::Ok back to Hawks talk::

by Fan Scribe Chris on Jul 12, 2010 11:59 PM EDT reply actions

I can't hear "Marc Gasol"

Without thinking about that Christmas marketing Ad the Grizzlies made last year.

Ok I obviously need to do more Pap Sy research

Cus dude is handling the ball quite a bit… I thought he was more of a 3/4 hybrid. Not sure if the team NEEDS his skill set.

by Fan Scribe Chris on Jul 13, 2010 12:11 AM EDT reply actions

Wow, Sy

Looking like a different man in the second half.

by Bronn on Jul 13, 2010 12:12 AM EDT reply actions

Damn!

Nice aggressive move. Luke Jackson didn’t want any piece of that action and gave it up to Sy and he DID something with it. Yes sir.

by Fan Scribe Chris on Jul 13, 2010 12:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Good ball movement for the Hawks

But too many passes as they let the shot clock expire, there.

by Bronn on Jul 13, 2010 12:18 AM EDT reply actions

James Augustine

Didn’t always have this much hair right? He might be having some reverse Samson action going… He needs to cut that ish off. ::Okay back to Xs and Os::

by Fan Scribe Chris on Jul 13, 2010 12:19 AM EDT reply actions

Don't think JC2 is a PG.

Don’t even think he’s a combo guard. Not sold on his dribbling / penetration and orchestration skills.

you need to put “LBJ killer” on the back

So throwed that Randy Moss jumpin up couldn't even catch it

I just joined the thread but

it’s really not fair that OJ Mayo, Thabeet, and Young are playing against our rookies. Getting my excuses ready for a loss. I like what I see though. They’re sharing the ball. I forgot what that looked like.

Bet it hit the rim!

by dstdeelite on Jul 13, 2010 12:28 AM EDT reply actions

Oh well

Hawks are going to lose this, but it’s really been a good game considering the attendance is like 25.

by Bronn on Jul 13, 2010 12:31 AM EDT reply actions

For the guys that matter...a good game tonight.

If the team defense in transition had been better, they might have won tonight.

by The Human Highlight Blog on Jul 13, 2010 12:31 AM EDT reply actions

That was entertaining.

Thanks Hawks for having a Summer League team this year.

by Fan Scribe Chris on Jul 13, 2010 12:33 AM EDT reply actions

Amen to that!

It was worth the money for the package just for tonight. JC2 made me smile.

More thoughts

1) Jeff Teague looks ready to get some serious rotation time. I think he had something like 16/4, but he had plenty of great passes that weren’t converted which should have increased his assist number. Of course, Acie Law had some great numbers in his second year of summer league, too.

2) Alade Aminu looks pretty solid, even though he didn’t see any time in the fourth quarter. Made some heads up plays, and he’s got some good touch around the basket.

3) Jordan Crawford did what was expected offensively, good shooting, ball-handling, and passing. His defensive effort was more than I hoped for, though-he looks pretty good.

4) Hawks didn’t have many other notables. Sergiy Gladyr might be a good shooter, but we need to see more of him to be sure. Pape Sy had a good second half after a first half where he just didn’t look ready at all. Trey Gilder is very active defensively, but it might just a Mario West kind of activity.

by Bronn on Jul 13, 2010 12:38 AM EDT reply actions

Teague looked confident

Best part of the game was Zero-wing trying to dunk on Thabeet.

by axhfan on Jul 13, 2010 12:46 AM EDT reply actions

I think he could have, too, he just took off a little bit too early.

by Bronn on Jul 13, 2010 12:47 AM EDT up reply actions

Question

Was LD’s new motion offense on display? If so, how did it pan out?

by Anonymous HawksGuy on Jul 13, 2010 8:31 AM EDT reply actions

I thought the ball moved pretty well

Given that these guys got together for about three days before they started play. Found some guys on back door cuts and swung it around the perimeter for some open looks from three. Also played at a pretty fast pace. We will see how much of that translates to the regular season.

http://www.peachtreehoops.com/

by Kris Willis on Jul 13, 2010 9:07 AM EDT up reply actions

That works for me

as long as the ISOs are at a minimum and the ball and players are actually moving, that’s a great thing!
