The Josh Smith Identity: This Summer's Blockbuster HIT!!!

Sitting at home watching reruns of the Miami Love Orgy on ESPN I was thinking to myself how in the world could we get better. So I was wondered what could we get if we did trade Josh Smith. First off, I'm the biggest Josh Smith fan and think that we would be better with him than without him from his incredible court vision, tenacious defense, insane dunkage. Unfortunately, Al Horford is a better fit at the 4 and I don't know/think that Smith would be as efficient at the 3, even though when he was at the 3 he was alot younger, unrefined, and not fully matured as a player (I'm thinking Larry Drew can get the most out of this guy). Getting an All-Star Forward in return for a High-End All Purpose player like Josh Smith is difficult...So, ladies and gentleman, I give you Carmelo Anthony. I know we would have some defensive liabilities signing Anthony but thinking we would gain someone who can spread the floor, shoot the jumper, and also create at the rim. That will allow for Atlanta to have a more cohesive lineup and everyone is happy (if we find a legitimate big-bodied, shot-blocking C)

THE TRADE:

Atlanta will need someone else to go along with Smith to compensate the salary differential so I have:

Atlanta Gets:

Carmelo Anthony

Denver Gets:

Josh Smith

Mo Evan

THE LINEUP

PG : Teague / Bibby

SG : Johnson / Crawford / Crawford

SF : Anthony / Williams / (Childress)

PF : Horford / ? / (Free Agent Signing For Back Ups - Haslem)

C   : ? / Pachulia / Morris (Available Free Agent C - Shaq, Scola -RFA, Ilgauskas, Brad Miller... thats pretty much it)

Looking at it realistically ASG probably won't ever go for it but oh well.... What do you guys think? Would you ever be open to adding someone of this roster who doesn't have a J or a C in their initials?

Smooth is my favourite player

So unless it was someone that we knew would stick around (i.e. Not Melo) I’m not up for it. I would rather trade Crawford. Given his expiring contract and production he would be desirable to other teams. And due to his contract and our loaded back court (and our thin front court) I would give him up before letting go of Smooth.

Smooth or Williams has to go/ or Williams goes to the bench

Our problems would be solved if Smooth ( that’s a wack nickname) would improve his ball handling, medium jumper, and 1st step….but as it stands one has to be moved. The bad part is the Josh, Marvin, and Josh Childress will be great parts on another team. Childress is going to be awesome in PHX. Marvin Williams on any other team would probably avg 15 pts per game. Josh Smith would be an all-star if he played in Dallas for example. But for whatever reason they don’t click in ATL……anyway go get Tim Thomas and put him on our bench plz…he can score

The Suns offer to take Josh Smith off your hands

For Jason Richardson’s (playoff 20 ppg/5 rpg 50% shooting) contract that expires after next year so you can afford to resign Al Horford.

We promise to take good care of JS and JC as you have done with our JJ.

You want Josh Smith?...

It’ll cost Robin Lopez and Steve Nash.

by Mr. Sanchez on Jul 17, 2010 10:35 AM EDT up reply actions

Won't happen.

But we’ll take Smith and you can afford to keep Horford.

We need to find a third party interested in Richardson who can send you a point guard or center, or both.

If you haven’t already found one on your own.

Yeah, no....

That deal stinks, and does nothing the need up front. If Phoenix wants Smith, they part with Robin Lopez in the least.

Perhaps you failed to note the nice bit at the bottom about the trade where it says adding Ellis for Smith reduces wins by 8 for the Hawks, but increases the Suns wins by 7. What a shock you’d like that deal. But whether some ESPN app likes it or not, the fact remains that the Hawks aren’t going to give up Josh Smith without getting a big back in return, a big that can start alongside Al Horford, and then probably needs even more than that. It’s not surprising y’all might want him, because he’s good. But guess what, that means Atlanta will want him too, and not give him up for some undersized SG who can’t play defense and is little more than a pistol. Looking at the Hawks roster, how could you be so delusional as to think they’d be willing to accept Ellis (and only Ellis) in exchange for Smoove?

"how could you be so delusional as to think they’d be willing to accept..."

That’s easy to do…. A.S.G.

Yeah, they aren't that stupid...

the deal saves them nothing since Smoove and Ellis are both between $11-12m, and we’ve got SGs out the wazoo with Joe, the Crawford boys, and Mo. We need a PG, C, and better perimeter D. Monta Ellis provides none of the 3. I could see swapping Jamal Crawford for him, but certainly not Smoove.

I know we give ASG little credit around here, but they aren’t that dumb or desire that badly to suck. Can you imagine a lineup of Bibby, Ellis, Joe, Marvin, and Horford? With a bench of nothing but Zaza and some Gs (Jamal, Teague, Jordan, Mo). Unless Larry Drew is secretely Don Nelson is disguise, it ain’t happening.

by Mr. Sanchez on Jul 20, 2010 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the idea with that one

(not saying it was perfect) was for Ellis to play point, since he’s really a combo guard, and a good one at that.

I imagine he’d be a big improvement over Bibby.

and

that particular trade was based on the assumption that you had already landed a center you liked in free agency. At the time, the reports implied that Shaq was on his way to Atlanta.

by waxmonkey on Jul 20, 2010 11:23 PM EDT up reply actions

It's not about a desire to suck or to be good

It’s about a desire to save a few bucks today, regardless of how minimal that might be. If the trade would save them $100k, I wouldn’t put is past them to make it happen. We aren’t talking about an organization making genius moves and suddenly making a moronic one, we’re talking about an organization that has consistently made poor decisions making a slightly worse decisions. The jump sn’t that far to make.

I wouldn't be surprised if it happened with A.S.G. running the show

Bring back memories when Memphis dealt Pau Gasol for a couple Graham Crackers and a bucket of fried chicken… all im saying is it could happen

The wins and losses

change in the trade machine isn’t particularly accurate, since it only quantifies a player’s PER and doesn’t include things like a team’s needs. You could fill a team with the nothing but the thirteen best point guards in the NBA and the trade machine would think they’d be unstoppable.

We’ve had lots of trade possibilities listed in our forums that involve Josh Smith coming to Phx, J-Rich going somewhere, and a point guard and/or center coming to Atlanta. Maybe one of them would be acceptable to Atlanta fans, especially since all of them so far save the cap space you might need to resign Horford.

And I figured Atlanta fans would be happy to get a decent point guard and center, along with JJ at the 2 and Horford at the 4, rather than how the team stands now.

To address your question, no, I think the Hawks would rightfully want more than just Ellis for Smoove, unless perhaps you had already landed a quality center in free agency and Smoove was a twelve million dollar a year backup to Horford.

Am I right to assume you all want Williams starting at the 3 over Smoove?

For fun, here were some that were posted in our forums:

The Funny Thing Is...

All the Hawks player that go to Phoenix are becoming awesome (Boris Diaw + Josh Childress) ad Then I think Bryan Colengelo and the Toronto Raptors are trying to become Mini-Phoenix with the addition of Leandro Barbosa and Boris Diaw… Its like three way with two girls and Atlanta always gets blue-balled…

for that comment alone

so glad i checked in on peach tree…I like J smooth and in different circumstances I’d love this deal. but looseing barbosa and getting turkey glue puts us thin on gaurds and thick on forwards…I disagree that that ATL gets Blue Balled…I’d say that goes to the RAP’s!
BTW
thanks again for J-Chill (god i love that deal), and JJ is the onley player who didn’t tank after leaving PHX and the Nash effect

"I’ve been in the league 14 years and I don’t think I’ve been called for a carry yet. It’s news to me," "I’ve never heard anyone complain about me carrying the ball. The best coach in the league Gregg Popovich didn’t have a problem with it last week."
