Not saying it's a good deal...
but the worst ever? Is he stupid? Well, going on some of their articles the last few months, I’d be inclined to say he just may be.
Comon
Worrt ever?
Here is something he failed to talk about.
1. He is the best player on a 50 win team.
2. He is the only player on the team that gets doubled every time!.
3. Joe is not super athletic which seems to contradict the statement that he will not age well. Athletic players do not AGE WELL.
4. Defence. He is by far the best defensive player on the Hawks team. A point that seems to have been forgotten.
5. If the Hawks let him go with out any comparable player in return( which is true given the fact that we can never get a comparable player in return) we would have one of the worst defensive backcourt in the NBA .Yes, worse than Golden State and not even as good offensively as Golden State – A lottery team.
6. Worst case scenerio, HE CAN BE TRADED IN 2 YEARS IF IT DOES NOT WORK OUT!!. This is a key fall back. If we dont keep him, the downside is really ugly.
Should i keep on going?
And based on ORtg
He’s the 6th best player offensively.
"You could spend the next fifteen seconds of your life watching a man and a tiger scream together, or you could be an idiot."
Fact.
Its stats like these make make me love you guys.
So throwed that Randy Moss jumpin up couldn't even catch it
Haha, well here's another one
According to DRtg, he’s the 10th best defensive player on the team. 10TH!!!!
Overrated, clap, clap, clap clap clap!
Overpaid, clap, clap, clap clap clap!
Seriously though, I understand what he brings to this team. I understand that for the last five years he has been the driving force for this team. Unfortunately that has been the case for about two yers too long. When Josh and Al are the focus and the game runs through them, this team has been damn near unstoppable. But all that aside, JJ is not a max player. For someone who thinks he is and wants to be, on the court he doesn’t show that he is capable of being a max player. Sure, he’ll make some big shots, but he’ll just as likely disappear in big games. He’s not a $100mil+ player and that’s all there is too it.
"You could spend the next fifteen seconds of your life watching a man and a tiger scream together, or you could be an idiot."
Fact.
4, 5, and 6 aren’t exactly true though. Trading him is not an automatic, especially considering the uncertainty of the collective bargaining agreement and what changes it will bring. If Jerome James and Zach Randolph can be dealt, anyone can, but it’s not a certainty. You are assuming in 5 that we’d go Bibby and Crawford as a backcourt, which is FAR from a certainty, should Joe opt elsewhere, and in actuality it is very unlikely those two would be our starting backcourt. And while Joe is a solid defender, our best is either Smoove or Horford, not Joe. Not even close, although the team really does lack a truly elite defender. Horford is solid, as is Joe, and Smoove has special numbers and highlights, but I don’t think anyone on the team can really claim to be among the best at their position.
Also, 3, more than just athletic guys have problems aging. See former HawkSteve Smith, who seems like a very comparable player to Joe in my eyes.
Good job...
…but I have to dissent on some issues here.
1. His gap between himself and Josh and Al is almost gone. The case could have been made last year that Al and Josh should have been the all-stars and Joe left home. The statistics are proving this out as well…except for points per game, impacted by the immense amount of possessions Joe uses on offense.
2. Not only doesn’t he do well moving the ball when doubled, but this was less the case last year with Crawford and Smith becoming more important offensively.
3. Most of his comps show a decline coming as soon as potentially next season. (Finley, Smitty, et al)
4. This was flatly shown to be untrue with Bronn’s analysis of hoopnumbers.com’s adjusted +/- and by Bret LaGree’s end of the season review of Joe’s year. Smith and Horford are the best on the team and Joe is fading…fast.
5. Based on the last bullet (#4), I’d say that we’re already there. Losing Joe would at least allow us the flexibility of re-tooling that while building around Josh and Al. Not the best news for next year, but after that we be able to get some players to peak with Al and Joe, not drag their primes down.
6. The downside to keeping him is paying a player, who is already in the 18-19 range in PER, even in his prime, superstar level salary in an unknown economic future where his 20M/year can easily restrict our abilities to add players who are peaking around our younger core. And if things change economically, who is trading for this contract?
Bottom line, it’s a short term move designed to tread water made by folks who aren’t going to be around when the pain hits.
But we will be.
I appreciate what Joe has done (#2 Hawk of the Decade as I ranked him), but giving him a 6 year contract, when he has already peaked, for almost 20M/year is franchise malpractice.

OK.
Heres more points.
- Smitty and Finley were far less versatile in terms of scoring the ball,.So the comparism is really not accurate. Other points include.- He is taller, stronger and bigger. Theses advantages will help with age. I see Joe as more like Paul Pierce – aging beautifully ;)
- He can be a very effective second option if Al or Josh turns out to be the 1st option. Remember his days at Phoenix when he was just a 3 point shooter ala Ray Allen.
- ANY PLAYER CAN BE TRADED. We are not even talking about a player like Joe that has no character issues and is a gym rat.
- He is certainly our most important defensive player. Who is responsible for guarding the other teams best backcourt player every night? You fail to remember that he was also overused on the defensive end where he had to guard the fast point guards .
- The Hawks cannot afford to look past 3 years from now. Heck no team can afford to look past 3 years into the future. The unknowns are too great to leave to chance.
Horford usually ended up gaurding other team's best guard
"You could spend the next fifteen seconds of your life watching a man and a tiger scream together, or you could be an idiot."
Fact.
No, that part actually worked
Horford actually did a better than average job defending players who were smaller and faster than he was. The reason the switching on defense doesn’t work is because of Bibby and JC, or when it put Josh on those quicker guards out on the perimeter.
"You could spend the next fifteen seconds of your life watching a man and a tiger scream together, or you could be an idiot."
Fact.
What, are in the front office???
Because your list is delusional, especially numbers 4 and 6.
Joe is extremely talented but a 6 year 119mill contract for a 29 year old is beyond insane. Especially one that’s better suited as a talented second than elite star, not sure what the Hawks are thinking on this one. Considering the Spurs had Richard Jefferson leave 15mill on the table, perhaps we should be wondering what the heck is happening with the NBA.
That would be more in line with their past...
considering how they didn’t make offers to Smoove or Chill before someone else did. Why offer Joe what no one else can? Oh how I hope you’re right, not that we lose Joe, but that we aren’t paying him $120m over 6 yrs.
I'm thinking that's Big Apple wishful thinking
sad as that sounds…

Who cares what Kelly Dwyer thinks?
He’s always been a hawk hater and the fact that we’re predicting a second round and out for Atlanta for the next six years only removes the preverbial blanket off of the stench of pessimism Atlanta fans have of this team
Atlanta will win a championship....someday
No way
is that contract worse than Arenas’. He was just coming off major knee surgery.
Is anyone else concerned??
I have been troubled by what the Hawks have been doing, and I wanna say it started sometime after we hired Larry Drew….heightened after the NBA Draft, then skyrocketed after hearing what the Hawks are offering Joe Johnson. My God I loved this kid when he was able to make those jumpers and his quiet demeanor…but JJ is NOT a first option and JJ is NOT worth 120 mil…I mean holy sh*t, this scares the crap out of me. Are the owners even worried about the Hawks’ supposed long-term? Are then even trying to improve the team? I know free agency just began, but this just doesn’t look good guys…something just doesn’t feel right about all this….still, GO HAWKS.
I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
-Michael Jordan, #23
Actually
Rumor is that Sund had to convince them to extend a max contract to Joe.
This is definitely NOT the worst EVER...
But let’s be honest… It’s the WORST FA contract we’ll see this summer!
WAAAAAAAAAY too much money for a dude his age, that’s not Kobe! I mean, c’mon! If you’re only as good as your last performance… Joe Johnson is TERRIBLE!
Joe is a Beast
Al is a Beast
Smoove is a MONSTER!
it not the worst deal. that a ridiculous thing to say
I know jj will decline but I don’t think he will be just an old geezer. I’m thinking a savvy veteran who will get better at different things and decline in other things. jj shouldn’t get this max deal. He should have 5 years max, he is very talented and has helped this franchise come up but he has even said that being the first option on the team isn’t easy and by his body language he isn’t “firstoption or captain” material. if he signs, they need to find someone to compliment him or change the gameplan.

Better at what? His legs will go out, so there is the consistent shot.. ISO joe? Lets hope not… Defense? Nope…
The only place I see him improving is his decision making, and I think that’s more of a result of him knowing he can’t handle it anymore.
Anyway you look at this is a bad decision. We got scared, plain and simple. Scared. To me it seems obvious that the Spirit just want to make the playoffs a few more years and sell the team, this kinda reeks of that.
I realize I am over emotional about this, but I feel like we just gave away our future unless somebody gifts us a big man.
Joe can play D
6’8, used to bodying up….Iso-Joe on the ice?

Its like he forgot about Gilbert Arenas.
how did Gilbert do after his massive contract. Injured season, injured season, washed up then pulled a gun out. DC is known for their stupid contracts. just take a look at the “dead skins”
So throwed that Randy Moss jumpin up couldn't even catch it
Not to mention
If Joe doesn’t get paid here, he’ll get paid somewhere. Gil had no chance to make that money anywhere.
exactly
Which is why I say with a new gameplan his decline may be graceful. and we all know players lose their legs but his court vision can increase and his assist ratio. he could be a better playmaker because he isn’t a bad one now. he is relied on a lot by the hawks which is why his Smarts of the game could help in the future……..though not at the expense of future players that could take us to the next level and signing current players(al josh teague, etc)
IF YOU CANT ACCEPT LOSING, YOU CANT WIN.
