Michael's Cunningham's report of Joe Johnson's pending contract with the Hawks

The effect this will have on Josh Childress' status and Jamal Crawford.

How the signing of Johnson and the continued frustration of Al Horford may impact his desire to re-sign with the Hawks.

Agree with most.

The one area where I disagree is Al at center. If you go with the premise that it is better to build around Al and Josh, then Al has to play center. Yes, he’s not going to be comfortable going head to head with a bigger, functional center like Brooks Lopez, but lets face the facts. How many of those guys are there in the NBA? Not many. Al is already an upper echelon center in the NBA. He’s 8th among centers in PER. He’s 3rd among centers in win shares, and he’s 4th among centers in win shares per 48. The guy is in the top 10 in the NBA period for win shares and win shares per 48. What’s amazingly cruel to me is that the Hawks obviously do not recognize what a great talent and player they have in Al Horford.

With Josh Smith, you have a player that even though he doesn’t seem to understand his limitations, he was 18th in the NBA in 2009-2010 in PER and was 4th in the NBA in defensive win shares. The only players in the league who have more defensive win shares than Josh Smith are Dwight Howard, Gerald Wallace, and LeBron James. The problem with Josh is that he can’t shoot anything outside of 10 feet. If you go on the premise that Al should be a power forward, then that puts Josh at small forward, where he is going to be very much out of place.

If you move Josh to allow Al to be a power forward, then the player you put at center next to Al is likely not going to be nearly as good as Al as a center or as good as Josh as a power forward.

Why not Josh at C?...

how many others could really abuse him offensively? David Lee? Joakim Noah? Anderson Varejao? Robin Lopez won’t over power him. Neither will Bogut. The only ones he can’t defend are the same ones Al struggles with, so why not? It might help him play within those limitations a little better.

by Mr. Sanchez on Jun 30, 2010 10:09 PM EDT up reply actions

The problem is...

If Al is truly important to your franchise, why would you make him uncomfortable by playing him at a position that he admitted he doesn’t like playing? Right now he has no choice though.

We’re seeing it with David Lee and Bosh (well Chris just wants to win also) now… They are totally open right now while being unrestricted about not wanting to be centers anymore. The prospects of Al wanting to stay in Atlanta when he’s unrestricted if he continues to be forced to play PF is not good. Just my opinion though.

by Fan Scribe Chris on Jun 30, 2010 10:32 PM EDT up reply actions

It's CERTAINLY not about what he wants

Joe WANTS max money
Josh WANTS to be allowed to shoot 3’s
Al WANTS to change positions without any regard as to how it will effect the roster.

If you want a big that can come off the bench and rotate Al to the 4 on occasion, fine. But just because a player wants something does not mean it’s the best thing to do, or that it even makes sense.

Do any of you even have a PROVEN “true center” that we could sign?

by axhfan on Jul 1, 2010 1:16 AM EDT up reply actions

Al can get by playing Center but has expressed the desire not to play there

If he isn’t buying into it then it is time to make other plans

by Kris Willis on Jun 30, 2010 10:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Then he has to be convinced.

Someone has to convince him that with the make up of this team and the outlook of the entire league as a whole, the center position is the best position for him and for the long term success of this team. Like I said, he is not going to find a center to play beside that is better than Josh is as a power forward, and if you move Josh to small forward, you defeat the purpose of having him on the floor.

If you move Al to power forward, then you have to move Josh for a comparable player at another position. That comparable player would preferably be someone who, like Josh, is an elite defender and in the top 20 in the league in PER.

let's not forget

Al played in the All Star Game at the center position, so it’s not like he is getting killed in there

Speaking the truth!

Great podcast fellas, we can definitely see thru what Sund is doing! My feelings are telling me that the Hawks will give Joe the max deal and he will sign (just shot myself twice), so ladies and gents, we really don’t have a choice but to look towards the future and see how we can build a championship team in Atlanta. Joe, Al, and Josh is a great core, so how do we build a championship team around these guys (since Joe will get a max contract w/ our beloved Hawks) to bring a championship to a city that is thirsty for a ring?

this looks Soooo real

But who would we get in this trade?

so when yal said that it was reported

At yahoo that they won’t be around to pay jj the money. did yal mean the team will be sold? or the team will change hands?(come on Arthur blank! bring the bacon!) but seriously what did you mean? and great podcast fellas. sund can’t disguise his intentions, it so crystal clear

IF YOU CANT ACCEPT LOSING, YOU CANT WIN.

by Hawksgirl on Jul 1, 2010 10:14 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

The idea is..

…that the owners feel like they’ll be out before the end of this deal. Who knows. I think it’ll be tougher to find a buyer with this kind of deal on the books. Not impossible, just a little harder.

oh so like different investors for the team

Okay gotcha thanks

Hawks win championship 2011 or 2012

With this group of players, including Joe Johnson, the Atlanta Hawks will win the NBA championship in the next two seasons.

All you haters will be eating your words about the team and will be saying how great they are and how they can repeat for years if they keep the team together. Time to get behind this team because these guys are the best shot Atlanta has at winning a championship in years.

We will be deeper and more athletic than any team in the NBA. They have the potential to play the best defense in the league. The offense has no where to go but up with a new system in place.

Go Hawks!!!

We can't be deeper than any other team

Because the ASG refuses to spend on more than the NBA minimum roster limit. Hell, it’s worse than that, they refuse to “pay” for more than 8-10 players, the rest are just warm bodies to keep the league from fining them.

"You could spend the next fifteen seconds of your life watching a man and a tiger scream together, or you could be an idiot."
Fact.

We'll be ok

We are going to be just fine. The problem in Atlanta wasn’t the players, it was the stagnation. The ball was in Joe’s hands for 15 seconds out of the 24 and then we had 9 seconds to pass and find a good shot. I think it’s safe to assume that after, what was it, 5 seasons with Woodson? Point being, after that many seasons of watching Woodson’s failures, I think its absurd to assume Larry Drew is going to make those same mistakes…..

We have a great group of guys on roster now, Jamal’s 11 million comes off the books next year. He may decide to resign with Atlanta for cheaper, as well. He does have family that already moved here, we gave him his first playoff experience, we’re about to have a new PG running the show in Teague and he will be able to push the ball, and he will still get starters minutes off the bench and the flexibility to score the ball. Hopefully, he will resign at the MLE of around 6 mil, but we’ll see.

Point being, our team is just fine even after signing Joe. We may not win a title while he is here, but we’re not going to become a terrible team. We will just be the same old Hawks we have been, above average in the regular season (as we will continue to win more games as our young players mature – because we still are quite young) but then tank in the playoffs. It sucks, but at least we can all be happy that we will win a lot of regular season games :/

Optimism and patience

I am from Atlanta. I was a season ticket holder the past two years. And I cant stand how negative the fans/ bloggers/ other people who have never seen this team play talk garbage about them.

The Hawks could not have played worse than they did from game 3 in the Milwaukee series onto the end of the Magic series. But anyone who watched them play any other time of the year for the past couple of seasons knows that they can beat any team in the league when they are playing well and are healthy. As they continue to play more games together, they will learn how to stay at that level for longer periods of time.

You have to remember that this team is still one of the youngest in the league. How many championship teams to have there been in the NBA with young teams? Yes, Joe will be 35 when his contract runs out, but the Hawks made that deal to win now. They have the talent to do it now and they can put it together for a playoff run and play to their potential, they can beat anybody in the NBA.
