Around SBN: Will Rhymes 'Fine' After Being Hit By Pitch And Fainting

The Houston Chronicle's Jonathan Feigen writes that a source close to the Rockets front office mentioned Joe Johnson as a potential target via sign-and-trade with the Hawks. The rumored proposal would most likely involve SG Kevin Martin coming to the Hawks.

I can take Johnson as a Nick or Bull

but not a Rocket

...in dixie land i'll take my stand to root for Atlanta

I’m curious why. With JJ in Houston, there’d be no chance of him burning the Hawks in the playoffs (at least until the Finals and if the Hawks make the Finals vs Houston we’ll deal with JJ then).

by redwards95 on Jun 28, 2010 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Haha

There’s no chance of him burning us in the playoffs regardless of who he plays with because he hasn’t played past April for a few years now.

Can we get Martin and Jordan Hill?

he’s a good scorer, not sure how much I’d want him as the go-to guy, but Martin is almost All Star caliber.

by Mr. Sanchez on Jun 28, 2010 10:52 AM EDT reply actions

Possible Coup for the Hawks

If they could get Martin for Johnson, that’d be an amazing windfall. Martin’s younger and gets to the freethrow line like crazy. I’d hate losing Johnson, but I think the Hawks would actually be a better team if they pulled that off.

by Auscorpiel on Jun 28, 2010 10:55 AM EDT reply actions

Which is why it reads, and I quote,

“…the Rockets are unsure if they would want to give up Martin to get Johnson. "

by Hoopinion on Jun 28, 2010 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Sund, make that deal happen, YESTERDAY!

we could get a 27 year old Joe Johnson for a 30 year old Joe Johnson, not to mention, for much cheaper.

Best Sign and Trade Rumor I have seen yet

that said I will believe it when I see it happening.

Why would JJ agree to this???

Houston is not among the teams that he is rumored to covet, is it? His best options are the Bulls, Heat, and Knicks, probably in that order. Also, if he could be a second banana to either LBJ or Wade, he will take it. It is hard to believe that all three of those options would fall through. Going to the Rockets would be worse than staying in ATL for him. Tougher conference, worst lineup (playing with a broken-down Yao???), but a somewhat better coach. Can’t see this happening at all.

by RepublicansWearNikes2 on Jun 28, 2010 11:22 AM EDT reply actions

I believe the thought was...

Yao opts out creating room, they sign Bosh and Keep Yao, using Martin to get Joe. That would give them Aaron Brooks, Joe, Ariza, Bosh, and Yao starting with Battier and others off the bench.

by Mr. Sanchez on Jun 28, 2010 1:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Also

To make the money work, wouldn’t Houston have to throw in some other pieces, or at least one more, say like Ariza? I know he had a down year but he was also playing for Houston. Maybe playing with Smoove, Horford, and bringing Martin over would allow him to show more of the year he had with LA than the one he just had with Houston.

by Jesse28 on Jun 28, 2010 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions

With LA or Houston...

I think we saw what Ariza is in both places—a long athlete, good defensively and on hustle plays, with some offensive skill but certainly not enough to be a focal point or anything more than a 3rd, 4th, 5th option.

And at that point, the moves seem to go into the ludicrous. Morey has built that team on reasonable size deals, getting loads of cheap but productive pieces that are somewhat interchangable (Battier, Hayes, Landry, Ariza, Brooks, Scola, Lowry, etc). Going back to the superstar centric style of roster, which they had with McGrady but this time with Joe and Bosh, just doesn’t seem like the path the Rockets would take. It makes them older, less versatile, and reduces their depth, that seems to be the opposite direction of the moves they’ve made the last few years. Not to mention if it’s even possible under the salary cap.

by Mr. Sanchez on Jun 28, 2010 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe

Morey could be feeling the heat to win. McGrady failed, Yao really hasn’t gotten them anything but an injured mantle piece, and while the team built has been cheap and produced admirably I don’t think it’s something sustainable in the NBA. The lack of numbers limits the ceiling on those kinds of teams, unlike in the MLB where there are tens of thousands of players in the minors that can be had for cheap to build a playoff team with.

Either way, I can’t see a SnT of JJ for Martin on the even so I added Ariza to the mix. At least we know he would be more assertive than Williams. We’d be looking at a Teague/Martin/Ariza/Smoove/Horford starting five.

Then again, I just put up a fan shot with the latest from Woj on Yahoo. Seems like sources are saying that Cuban might be looking for JJ to join Dirk through a SnT. There’s a couple of ways that could go as well.

If Sund wants Beaubois involved...

I’m sure this rumored deal would die almost instantly. I agree with mr above, Dampier would be an ideal piece to be involved for the Hawks.

by Fan Scribe Chris on Jun 28, 2010 11:58 AM EDT up reply actions

I'd rather Caron than Dampier...

although I wouldn’t be too excited about anyone on their roster (aside from the likely unavailable Beaubois).

by Mr. Sanchez on Jun 28, 2010 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions

You could get both Dampier and Butler if you include Evans in the trade.

Then move Dampier for a big man or waive him and use the MLE for once.

by mrHonline on Jun 28, 2010 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Nice deal if we have the stones to demand Martin. We got hosed in the Anderson deal.

by The Real Hawk on Jun 28, 2010 11:40 AM EDT reply actions

It's hard...

to get the better end of the deal when negotiating with Daryl Morey.

by Fan Scribe Chris on Jun 28, 2010 11:43 AM EDT up reply actions

NOT IN THE EAST!!

Please Sund, If you are going to let Joe go, let him go to the West. Right now, we are among the 4 best teams in the East. Trading Joe to Miami,Chicago will make our opponents better. Why do we want to do that?
Dallas is the best case scenerio. Besides, they have the pieces to do a sign and trade deal.

by dkrib on Jun 28, 2010 12:42 PM EDT reply actions

If true

I like it. Like the person said above a 27 yr old JJ for 30 yr old JJ for much cheaper. Kevin Martin would be a great addition to the squad.

by Sterling Platinum on Jun 28, 2010 12:54 PM EDT reply actions

JJ is better than Kevin Martin imo...

he’s good, but people calling him a 27 year old JJ are forgetting just what a special talent the man has been. He’s MUCH thicker than Martin, probably a better ball handler, more natural on the ball, better defender, among other areas of difference.

by Mr. Sanchez on Jun 28, 2010 1:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I posted that originally, and I sincerely believe that Joe's returns

will diminish exponentially beginning next season. He has been in the top 10 in MPG for the last 7 consecutive years, averaging over 40 minutes a game for 4 of those seasons.

Although his game is certainly not predicated on raw athleticsm, we saw evidence in the Bucks and Magic series of what happens when an athletic defender covers him one-on-one. He is relegated to the fadeaway jumper, and when it is going in, he is an All-Star, but it will be going in a lot less over the next couple of years.

I think that Joe’s production will drop precipitously and Martin’s will improve somewhat, thus, you would be getting the same production from a 30 year old Joe as a 27 year old Martin.

I would never pretend that Martin is close to the player that Joe has been, but I just don’t see Joe continuing to be that player either. Oh, and Martin may have the ugliest shot in the NBA.

by Fred Pen on Jun 28, 2010 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Ah, I see we are in agreement...

27 yr old Martin vs. 27 yr old JJ, and that’s no contest. But around $35m for 3 years of a late 20s Martin vs. $120m for 6 years of an early 30s Joe isn’t much of a contest either imo.

by Mr. Sanchez on Jun 28, 2010 2:04 PM EDT up reply actions

The last thing we need is another player who plays absolutely no defense

Martin can stroke the ball but his defense is wretched. Has anybody else read the article with Al talking about JJ re-signing? I love Al, but what is he smoking? He’s probably just being politically correct. Also what’s to make of the “team chemistry” issues. If that’s true, who’s the say this won’t happen again? We’re bringing back the same exact players next season. This whole process is so frustrating.

Bet it hit the rim!

by dstdeelite on Jun 28, 2010 2:29 PM EDT reply actions

I think Al as a player knows

taking a step back and losing Joe isn’t in the teams best interest to compete for a title. Management and players sometimes have different mindsets as far as team needs and he is blatantly saying that we need center. Everyone has to understand that the players know more than we do about this organization.

but who is he referring to when discussing internal problems?

if it’s Joe, then let him go. But that doesn’t seem to be the case with him wanting Joe. He does repeat the desire for a better backup C.

by Mr. Sanchez on Jun 29, 2010 7:20 AM EDT up reply actions

I'll believe it when I see it.

That deal would actually make some sense, so I know it is doomed to fizzle out. I fully expect us to end up trading for a role player and some goofy expiring contract.

Here is a thought completely off the current discussion but remains relevant.

I wonder if there is a consensus between the owners in what direction they should go with Joe Johnson? It would be easy if they all said yes or if the all said no. Who gets to make the decision? Will Joe be left twisting in the wind once again? You have to hope that they have given Sund guidelines going into free agency.

If the past is any indication

Then I fully expect the ASG to once again sue each other over JJ.

Look at it this way.

Kevin Martin – 27 years old, 0.145 WS/48 for his career.

Joe Johnson – 29 years old, 0.094 WS/48 for his career.

Also of note, Kevin Martin has had four seasons where he scored 20+ points per 36 minutes in his career. Joe Johnson only has two.

Houston is as close to home as it gets for him.

He can take advantage of the Chinese market via Yao Ming.

This is their lineup, it is championship caliber:

PG: Aaron Brooks, Kyle Lowry
SG: Joe Johnson, Shane Battier
SF: Trevor Arize, Chase Buddinger
PF: Scola, Jordan Hill, Patrick Patterson
C:Yao Ming, David Anderson

You assume Yao actually plays more than 10 games

That’s a pretty big assumption
