Hawks Injury Report: None

Magic Injury Report: Mickael Pietrus sprained an ankle but is apparently good to go.

Blogging With the Enemy: Orlando Pinstriped Post

Predicted bane of the Hawks' existence: Dwight Howard's rebounding.

Most important stat with less than three hours before game time? 0-0. The head to head record, the offensive efficiency, the rebounding rate, the player matchups, none of it matters come tip off. All that matters is whether the Hawks can win, and they can. The record is 0-0, and if that stat changes in the Hawks favor, this is more than a series, this is a chance to do something special.

Key to the game that has yet to be mentioned on this site? Transition defense.

Go Hawks!

means he is at the game and with credentials. Look for some good stuff tomorrow.

They have put me front and/or center in the press room

Nowhere to hide for THHB. Guess I’ll have to ask the question about how we defended Howard after the game.

I am really nervous about this one.

The Hawks absolutely have to play well tonight. I don’t want one of our classic road lie-down jobs. The Magic owned us this year…let’s prove everyone wrong!!

by Duff_Man on May 4, 2010 5:34 PM EDT reply actions

What if they lie down tonight

just to catch the Magic napping in game 2? I’d take it…Woody plays the “play harder—no adjustments” card again; Van Gundy, like Skiles, takes Woody for the goob he is and doesn’t plan for any actual adjustments, then Woodster breaks out the zone press or some mackin’ shi-ite.

It’s for real, yo.

Anyone know who's announcing this game?

Hopefully it’s Van Gundy and Mark Jackson
Worst case scenario would be Hubie Brown and Jon Barry

I have ZERO confidence of us putting up a halfway decent fight tonight.

I predict the Magic slaughter us by 30. Ugh. This is a nightmare matchup for us. We are so quick to go away from the game plan when they start draining their 3s. Josh starts jacking up jumpers and 3s. Joe dribbles for 22 seconds then passes to Josh who is more than willing to take the jumper. I have to prepare myself mentally for this game. I have to have the lowest of low expectations so that I can be presently surprised if they do the opposite of what I just wrote. Go Hawks!!!!

BTW Watch how Dwight drain the majority of his FT’s against us. It’s unreal!! This is my nightmare!!

Bet it hit the rim!

Good luck Hawks fans

I just wanted to express my well-wishes now before the games start since if this becomes a great competitive series (which I think it will), we will probably hate each other guts and probably won’t have any kind of conversation that won’t be misinterpreted as being hostile.

I guarantee Dwight will annoy you

Every time he looks at the refs increduously when he misses a shot and doesn’t get a call, by the 3rd game, you will want to punch him in the face.

Live at the Game

Just came from the locker room—can’t say it’s any different than in games past. Joe Smith offered that he can’t remember when a (53) win team was such an underdog—-Marvin said that the team has been unheralded since the beginning of the season (when they were left out of the Top 3 discussion). Horford offers that they will try to get the Magic moving, but did not specifically answer my question about the pick and/or roll.

Okay, you guys want to know something random: The Braves might be the key tonight.

When the Hawks won game 2 in the first series, the Braves had a big come-from-behind win against the Phillies that night.

The Braves then went on to lose 9 games in a row. The Hawks lost 3 games in a row. Neither team won until last Friday…when both won again on the same night. Then the Hawks won 2 games in a row while the Braves swept the Astros.

If the Braves win tonight the Hawks will win tonight. It’s random, weird sports karma that makes no sense.

Adjustments=

Woodson: We need more effort and consistency. It’s clear that if we were efforting and consistenting more often we’d have won this game.

Pack up the court, pack it up

….it’s all over. Turn out the lights, bulldoze Phillips and turn it into a parking lot.

I have never seen an all out, full scale laydown like I’m watching tonight. This is embarassing on all levels. There is no way (if the front office had any sense) you bring this team in full into next season. Keep Horford, find a legit defensive minded center, and let everyone else walk, J-Clank’em included.

I have to agree...

If the whole series is this lopsided there is no way they stay intact. You just can’t do it.

By not having a legitimate offensive concept.

And make no mistake about it…10 points and 7 TOs in one quarter will lead to defensive breakdowns.

Low blow

Very…very low blow.

Okay, possible good news

The Magic might be rusty for game 2 since it’s been so long since they’ve played basketball.

They're talking about Jerry Sloan

Just imagine, for a moment, this uber-talented Hawks team were coached by a man like him. If he had the health and talent that we’ve had here, these Hawks would be serious contenders.

wow Hawks really suck

wow you guys actually thought this series would be close. You barely beat Milwaukee. Magic are just far superior to the hawks this is insane. Its like they just took a huge dump on your season.

Woodson, where did that energy go from the first quarter?

Woody: I wish I knew. (Rambles on about Orlando being a good team.)

by Bronn on May 4, 2010 10:31 PM EDT reply actions

Question: Woody, what happened to the ball movement?

Answer: I think our defense was pretty solid tonight. We held them to under 200 points so we did our job on that end.

Bet it hit the rim!

Woodson: We had no juice tonight. We’ll have to regroup. We didn’t play Atlanta Hawks basketball tonight. I thought we were ready to play but…

Bucks fan here.

If it makes you guys feel any better, if the Bucks won that series they would lose by 80. I guarantee it. Only difference is that all sharp objects would have to be removed from Skile’s vicinity.

This what the Hawks look like without Joe Johnson...

because he is completely neutralized by Barnes.

Hawks have no answer for their best player, and they have the one guy in the league that really shuts down the Hawks’ best.

Not that JJ was tearin’ it up in the Bucks series or anything, anyway…

by rbubp on May 4, 2010 10:35 PM EDT reply actions

It's not that

The Hawks simply have no response when a team makes them work offensively. Their entire offense is actually built to do as little work as possible. Dribble, put up a jumpshot, and try to get some transition baskets. If you match them up against a team that’s actually comparable in terms of talent, they’re stymied because they don’t operate a functional offense.

by Bronn on May 4, 2010 10:37 PM EDT up reply actions

They're able to get away with this

because they have more pure talent than about 26 or 27 of the other NBA teams.

by Bronn on May 4, 2010 10:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, i agree...

I’m just saying that without Joe at all the others are reduced to sniveling smears on the floor. If one guy can contain him the others are dead meat.

by rbubp on May 4, 2010 10:39 PM EDT up reply actions

When we get in trouble

Ball movement absolutely stops. NOT AT ALL SURPRISING THAT IT ONLY GOT WORSE

by Bronn on May 4, 2010 10:39 PM EDT up reply actions

We are a PANIC team.

Composure is not a trait of the Hawks. Josh and Joe seem to mentally melt down and it brings everyone down with them.

by Duff_Man on May 4, 2010 10:42 PM EDT up reply actions

i think that is true

but in general outside shooting is the first thing that goes, becuse when shooters get tight they miss, and we got tight

by ATLpaul on May 4, 2010 10:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Shooters shoot better when they get open looks

And we stop trying for them, instead opting to dribble in place and hoist contested jumpers than to work the ball around laterally and try to kick the ball back out.

by Bronn on May 4, 2010 10:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes.

When there is no one on the team to cause the defense to bend through post-ups or penetration, it all devolves into a bricklaying contest.
