Who's cheaper than JJ?

I want Joe back and I want him here long-term, but if it requires a max deal then let him go.

Here are the candidates to replace the Joe Show.

John Salmons - Essentially the same player as Johnson though not quite as good defensively..... or offensively. But Salmons would fill the JJ void. And he has the added value of already playing with Bibby in Sacramento. Overall, I think Salmons would be a good alternative and just a lateral move.

Anthony Morrow - Call me bias for the GT grad but Morrow would be a nice option. In his two years at Golden State Morrow has been one of the best 3-point shooters in the league and the only good defender on a horrible defensive squad. Morrow is young, though, so the Spirit may be reluctant to give him the keys to the team. So Morrow, if signed, could fill Jamal's spot as Jamal fills Joe's. Either way, Anthony could be a nice pickup. Especially considering his upside.

Rudy Gay - Probably not as well rounded a player as JJ, but arguably still better. If Memphis can't lock this guy up the Hawks should definitely take a look at him, even if that means letting Joe leave. Plus, don't you kinda wanna get back at the Griz for almost stealing Smooth from us?

Micheal Redd - If healthy, could be a major steal. Though I don't see any logical reason for Redd to opt outta his contract.

Al Harrington - I realize he's a Foreward. Bring him off the bench to fill Jamal's scoring, then let Jamal start. Bam!

Allen Iverson - I don't care. I love AI. There.

Richard Jefferson - I don't want him. But he may be available. Not to mention we would finally have a player to provide that much needed chemistry with Jason Collins!

Jamal Crawford - "The Difference" may turn into "The Stopgap" if all goes horribly wrong this off season. I love Jamal off the bench, but the thought of Crawford and Bibby having to defend the best guards in the league to start a game? Not for me.

I like rudy gay. is he better than jj? no. could he be? of course

He is young and ready and if the inevitable happens, meaning jj leaves, then rudy gay could be a great addition. I don’t like wade or lbj. talent and attitude are two different subjects and the attitude ain’t happening

First of all

You have to know the rules we could only offer another teams free agent like 8 or 9 million, where could offer Joe $20, that’s what the Larry Bird rule is, and I doubt Gay is gonna sign for anything less than what Josh signed for which is more than 8 or 9 Mill. The rest of those guys aren’t worth discussing good day people

by Truthspitter on May 4, 2010 1:33 AM EDT reply actions

It can be done though

I see a way where we could sign both Joe and Rudy it is very possible

by Truthspitter on May 6, 2010 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think we could sign both

But we could sign one or the other. Keep in mind that Rudy is making less than 4 this year.

by axhfan on May 6, 2010 7:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes we could I know we could

We just have to sign Rudy before Joe and Mo must opt out. You have to no the cap rules to understand where Im coming from. I will explain after the season is over.

I wasn't talking about cap rules

I don’t think Sund would be allowed to use that much money. You know… cause he’s not the owner. I’ll explain budget to you once the draft is over.

I want to start a

MONTA ELLIS movement. A major concern for maxing out JJ is that he won’t be worth it in in the middle of his contract and towards the end because of his age.

MONTA ELLIS is as good or a better scorer than JJ. MONTA ELLIS is younger and more atheletic than JJ.

And yes, MONTA ELLIS is cheaper than JJ.

Al Horford and Josh Smith are gonna be the top players, leaders, and faces of this team and MONTA ELLIS will only solidify a youth movement for the Hawks again. Can you imagine the speed of this team with Jeff Teague and MONTAE ELLIS in the backcourt with Smoove and the Boss in the front court!!!!!!

I know its not speculation season yet, and I know MONTA ELLIS is not a free agent, but I was thinking of a trade (a three team trade).

A three team trade including Atlanta, Chicago, and Golden State. Chicago gets JJ – Golden State gets Luol Deng and Kurt Hinrich – Atlanta gets MONTA ELLIS and Anthony Randolph (not necessary but that would be even sweeter for the Hawks to add another young athletic big to the frontline rotation).

C’mon…. can I get some supporters.

Let's wait and see

This is the big question. I want to see how JJ plays in the series with Mickey’s team. I am a big JJ fan, but he needs to show up, no more 8 points on 4 of 14 shooting, and good D for max. No way. But let’s wait, this is the big question of the off-season.

by ATLpaul on May 4, 2010 5:15 AM EDT reply actions

Its a huge IF and I know we don't have the money

But its good to dream is it not? now if he has a monster series like ATLpaul said then no questions about next season, and to be honest I don’t want him to go at all but IF it happens, rudy gay or even montae Ellis would be a “dream” of mine

Morrow is the shizzle

We could easily rotate between JC and Morrow dependig on match-ups.

expendables

Marvin, Zaza, Mario, Collins, Morris, Chills- What can we get for these? This is how you keep Joe without going max. Make him a worthy offer and add some real players around him……AMARE!!!!!…or Bosh
I do like Rudy Gay…I would let Marvin go to get him.

by Cmart34 on May 4, 2010 9:41 AM EDT reply actions

We only have $10 mil

I am hearing if we don’t sign Joe we only have $10 mil to spend w/o going over the lux tax. You almost have to go young with that. I like Rudy Gay, but can we get him for $10 mil. If Mo was more consistent, I wouldn’t be against starting him and playing inside out. Make Al Horford the focus of the offense. Have him and Josh work inside and create for others. I think Marvin could benefit from this and Mo could hit threes and play “D”. Then you can pick up another good bench player, a nice SF backup to come in with Jamal. Woody though wouldn’t know how to handle it, so a new coach is almost inevitable, especially if we don’t resign Joe. I do like some of the suggestions above as well.

its a step back

Anybody who aint Melo, Wade, Bron, to replace JJ is a step back. Morrow?? c’mon, Monta?? There is nobody better right now face it. So if we don’t sign him, and add a star we will be going backwards……the only way I’m okay with losing JJ is……. The Wizards get to void the huge contract for Arenas and we some how can get him in FA because no team wants him and we get him for a lower cost than Joe, and then added C/PF like Bosh or Amare.
i would still rep Joe Johnson- Knick, Bull, Heat wherever he goes I’m rooting for him

by Cmart34 on May 4, 2010 3:49 PM EDT reply actions

My push for Morrow

It wasn’t one for replacing JJ one-for-one, but more an effort to help replace his overall production. I don’t believe the Hawks are in a position to even attempt to fully replace JJ with only one person, mainly because of financial issues, but also because the pool of players who could even do that are very limited. But, as I’ve stated before, it would be very possible to replace the production with multiple players. Moving JC into the starting 2 spot and adding Morrow on the bench is a good place to start, but it doesn’t have to end there.

There are other options out there and I think if JJ leaving should come to pass that we should at least look at them.

Currently we got...

Bibby
Teague
Crawford
Marvin
Smoove
Horford
Zaza

Now, anyone other than Horford, imo, should be available if an offer that can make us better is out there (meaning Smoove commands a high price, the rest not so much).

Beyond that, there’s Joe, and the need for at least 2 wings (Joe would be one if resigned). Then the need for 2 bigs. Also, the question of is Teague an adequate PG, but we don’t learn that until next year at the earliest.

at what point do we consider teague a bust?

by maxxj3 on May 4, 2010 4:23 PM EDT up reply actions

What about 2 years from now?

When Dejuan can’t stay off the DL and we need to replace Bibby. Hell, both of those scenarios could happen next year.

by axhfan on May 4, 2010 6:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Blair is one dimensional....

rebounding. He’s Tractor Traylor come again, and will probably have about as long a shelf life. Teague has a few more years, especially considering he’s had some flashes this year in limited time.

by Mr. Sanchez on May 4, 2010 8:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Smoove is valuable

But I don’t know if I’m ready to let go…ask me after he fires up a jump shot.
but he was a difference maker in this series and all year. I was a Marvin fan, but its time to listen to some offers. I think he will be a good player, but just not in ATL.

by Cmart34 on May 4, 2010 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not ready to let Smoove go...

and would prefer to keep him. But if the right offer came about, I’m not sold on him and Horford as capable of making a championship front line. Smoove isn’t a 3, he doesn’t have the handle, the shot, or the lateral quickness. Horford isn’t a 5, at least not when Howard is the competition. Now, the right backup C, a big guy like Gortat, Thabeet, etc, alleviates that problem. That said, I like Horf’s steady hand to Smoove’s outbursts of brilliance, that’s why if forced to pick one big man to be untouchable, he’d be my choice. I wouldn’t be looking to part with either, I can’t say that enough, neither should be actively shopped, just saying if it was between one or the other kept to play PF….

by Mr. Sanchez on May 4, 2010 8:26 PM EDT up reply actions

also

Forgot to add Ray Allen. Though kinda glad I didn’t remember.

by axhfan on May 4, 2010 6:44 PM EDT reply actions

Horford....

is the only keeper. He’s the uncrowned (by the media at large) leader of this team. The ONLY one who plays hard every night. Everyone else should be moved if can be….ESPECIALLY Joe. Boy, the drafting of Marvin Williams keeps kicking this team in the ass…every day…every day we have to watch Bibby get killed on a screen and roll, or a drive and dish. What we’re paying Bibby could have gone to a center that could hold his own and let Al play his natural position. Remember, Noah and Speights were the centers on the Gator title teams, and Hofrofd played the 4. Nothing wrong with J-Clank’em playing the 3…he’d be the ATL version of Ariza. For the future:

1. Let Joe Walk (Woody’s a goner anyway, no need to even say otherwise)
2. Get a legit competent center (draft, sign, or trade)
3. Let Teague start (either he sinks or swims…it’s time to find out)
4. Find a shooter to play the 2 (which keeps Jamal on the bench)

Lineup:
C
Horford
J-Clank’em
SG
Teague

Bench: JC, Marvin, Bibby, whoever else….

One step back to take the next big step into championship contention….I think this is the way.

monta ellis

1. not interested in sharing the ball, so unless u turning Jeff Teague into quick steve kerr where he is only point guard by title
2. not interested in defending anybody
3. he and crawford played together in GS and it worked out terrible so Crawford would have to go

a dynamic scorer without question and coming back to south might be good for him but i’m not a fan of the small 2guard as your lead dog

I said name the fundamental hawk then the second most fundamental. AND then tell me why would you let EITHER one of them go and keep everybody else. That post says “get rid of joe” It does not answer my question so you fail.

Atlanta will win a championship....someday

by maxxj3 on May 5, 2010 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions

True fundamentals or based on talent?

Talent: Joe & J-Clank’em
Fundamentals: Horford & Bibby

Horford is the only keeper in the bunch. Bibby is just a bit past his starter expiration date, but is useful as a backup/mentor to Teague. Joe is the most talented, but his game is an offense killer if he is to be the main option. J-Clank’em can jump out of the building, but has no reliable mid-range game, is lacking a real basketball IQ, and is too prone to emotional shifts in the game. Given those choices…talent comes and goes, but without a good foundation, no team can survive. Joe has to go for the sake of the team…if J-Clank’em can be put into a role where he isn’t one of the primary options, then he’s worth his weight.

Does that answer your question?

by ronniemac03 on May 5, 2010 7:57 PM EDT up reply actions

ok...you're putting Joe johnson in the same talent pool as Josh

And it’s not compatible. Joe Johnson has more than proved his worth and Josh still can’t make a jump shot or not take one for the sake of the team 6 years into the league. Joe Johnson’s game is predicated on the player movement of the hawks (which hardly has any) and has the most assists for any hawk. Bibby is fundamentally sound in what way, shooting three’s? I don’t get this, everybody dogs joe because he is the star but everyone else gets a pass cause they don’t get enough opportunities? That is unfounded

by maxxj3 on May 5, 2010 8:21 PM EDT up reply actions

look the reason I even asked that question

Is because going forward we need fundamentally sound players to compete with elite teams and we always give them away.

Atlanta will win a championship....someday

by maxxj3 on May 5, 2010 8:23 PM EDT up reply actions

I was stretching it was Bibby...

…though he is a serviceable backup who has been through the wars. Apparently you missed the actual answer and immediately jumped to the part that tells the truth about Joe. And how has Joe proved his worth? Consistently disappearing in the clutch? Going iso-Joe at any given moment and not working within the offense? Taking a contested shot against Milwaukee when one pass would have given Teague a completely open look?

Bottom line, Joe is not someone we can build our team around if ATL wants to be a perennial contender. It’s not in his pedigree. It is in Horford’s, and he is who we should build around, which is what I was speaking on in my original post.

But we all know what’s gonna happen. Joe will get his money, a new coach will come in, and maybe the new guy will let Teague get the lion’s share of the minutes. Marvin will still be an inconsistent bag of rocks, Josh will be Josh, Al will get his double double, and ATL will still be second round fodder going forward. That’s all ownership wants….6 to 7 extra home games a year.

by ronniemac03 on May 5, 2010 9:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Joe is sound...

but the thing with him is still price and role as it’s always been. Other than Joe who may be priced out, there’s Horford as said above. He’d be the only locked in player on the roster. IMO, the rest are suspect going forward. I’d like to keep them all, but some changes must be made either scheme wise, roster wise, or both. Considering the amount of bench players under contract, roster changes are a given.

How Bout

Some how, some way, getting a Brandon Roy, OJ Mayo, or Andre Igudala, give up some expendable pieces like Marv, ZaZa, Mo, & Bibby( we need to let Teague play, he’s aggressive, athletic, & pretty strong for a PG his size) or 1st rd pick this yr. Those guys (esp Brandon) would thrive in our system(that is if Woody aint gone) We will always be a team that will ALWAYS get into the conference semi’s & flop if we dont make moves!
