On Jeff Teague's Role--Now and in the Future

Star-divide

So this is my first Fanpost--erroneous information but interesting nonetheless. I've been a Hawks fan since I was a wee lad, but only really got into the team two seasons ago.

Now, I've seen a lot of hate spewed at Woody for not playing Jeff Teague more often--and no doubt, he's a good player. He displays flashes of brilliance, especially on defense, and he'll be capable of running the offense after a few years. Those come-from-behind blocks. Those jump shots. And from what I've read, he's a dilligent worker too. Make no mistake, Jeff Teague is a good player--but he's a better bench player.

On the flip side, you have the Bibster: aging, but knowledgable of the game. He fought against Kobe in his glory days and nearly won, too. At this point in his career--however successful--he's a prime candidate to teach Jeff everything he knows. And why is that bad? I'm not asking Bibby to surrender his starting role (that would be absurd), but to prepare Jeff for the future. Bibby was and still is a brilliant point guard--but the torch must be passed at some point. From Michael Jordan to Kobe Bryant; from Magic Johnson to Zaza Pachulia (I kid, I kid)--and now from Bibby to Teague.

Jeff is ten years Bibby's junior. In other words, he has a rare opportunity most rookies and sophomores never have: to learn from an experienced, reknowned player. That is his role for now: to learn. A first hand example? Darren Collison and Chris Paul of the New Orleans Hornets.

After Chris Paul was injured, Collison took over--no one expected him to explode the way he did. But after a few weeks, people began to wonder, "is there a point guard crisis in New Orleans?" Don't get me wrong, Collison did most of the work, but you always saw Chris--before a game or during timeouts--whisper or point out something. That's the role Bibby should play: the facilitator; the offensive lubricator; the teacher.

Or I'm just crazy, and the Hawks should start the rookie.

But--I know I'm not crazy, because I'll take experience over youth every game.

You have it exactly right. Bibby should start because he’s just better even with his abilities diminished by age. Teague should continue to come in off the bench and should get more minutes especially when the Hawks play a team with a fast PG whom Bibby can’t guard. I worry about Teague’s ability to make shots, but it’s too soon in his career and he’s been given too few minutes to write him off as a bad shooter just yet. The Hawks can afford for him be Bibby’s understudy for another year, but hopefully whoever coaches next year will not forget to play Teague or use Mario West as a end of half defender instead of Jeff.

But that implies Teague gets decent minutes off the bench...

10-15 or so, and he doesn’t. Hell, Woody often gives him less than 5 minutes if not a DNP-CD. That is no way to learn.

Well

You have to consider Teague’s competition: 6th man of the year Jamal Crawford—and as far as point guards go, that’s about it. But then you look at Maurice Evans and Mario West, and when they come in, Joe can slide into the point guard position. There’s no real place for Teague off the bench.

And besides, a bench player with 15 minutes instead of 5 minutes is still a bench player. You can’t forget about practices—ethereal as Iverson makes them out to be—and scrimmages, either.

I see a big difference between a bench player getting 15 minutes vs. 5...

especially with a rookie. One is a definite part of your rotation, the other is an afterthought scrub. It’s the difference between Zaza Pachulia and Randolph Morris.

You're splitting hairs

because either Bibby teaches Teague when he’s on the floor for 15 minutes, or he’s teaching Teague when he’s on the floor for 5 minutes. In my opinion, Jeff was not drafted to provide instant offense, or even an instant player. He was drafted for the future. So deliberating the difference between bench minutes is pointless at this, well, point.

Jeff’s not an afterthought—far from it, in fact. He’s an investment in the Hawks’ future. So for now, he will sit back, watch, play limited minutes, and learn. And when his time comes, he’ll actually start playing.

Just my opinion.

I hear what you're saying, but...

…it’s not simply a start or don’t start issue, which unfortunately are the only options in your poll. It’s a play more minutes issue. You bring up Collison but without ackowleding that it was a completely different scenario. Paul is the PG for NO, he got injured, and the back-up PG, Collison is now getting all of his minutes. Crawford is not a PG and shouldn’t be playing the point, Bibby isn’t out for the season, and Teague should be getting more minutes than 3,DNP,5,DNP,9,DNP, etc.

Collison didn’t explode because of something Paul said, he exploded because of his own talent and the opportunity to flew said talents. Sure, having Paul around to point out some of the finer things helped, but it’s not a black and white one-for-one relation.

Do I believe Teague should start? No, not if Bibby is healthy, but I do believe he should be getting many more minutes than Mario West (and I’m a huge West supporter), and, on ocassion, he should probably get more minutes than even Bibby. Like you said, if Paul can teach/coach/mentor Collison from the bench, then why can’t Bibby?

Agreed. Woody hasn’t given Teague the minutes he needed to develop this year. 5 minutes here and 0 minutes there aren’t enough even for Rick Sund to make a judgment whether Teague is on track to become the team’s starting PG in a couple years. You can only learn so much in practice. You have to be on the floor when it actually counts to develop as a player. Hopefully we’ll see a lot more of Teague next year although that’s unlikely based on past history if Woody is re-signed.

TEAGUE

In my opinion Teague should be starting…period.Bibby is a liability on defense and is too in love with the 3ball.He has lost his ability to penetrate and rarely has a chance to show whatever game management skills he may have left because of the isolation offense that Woody runs(i hate it) Let Bibby mentor him from the bench

TEAGUE

Here is what i think needs to happen.Add a center(THIS IS VERY CRUCIAL),move Al and Josh to forward with Joe and Teague in the backcourt.Bring Bibby,Jamal,ZaZa,Moe and Marvin off the bench. This gives a virtual 2nd starting 5 and a super solid 10 man rotation.I just think that Marvin and Bibby are better suited playing against bench players. The question then becomes,Are these guys willing to accept playing the backup roles
