Game Preview:

If you wanted to know if the Hawks have Toronoto's number, a win tonight would prove it. The Raptors are in a sort of not really "must win" after losing their last five and nine of their last ten. Joe Johnson is out. The Hawks are on the road, the second of back to back. The team is starting Zaza at point guard away from making the odds completely stacked. Our boys bring home a win tonight, and you can safely start rooting for a first round with the Raptors.

Of note, and it is neither my idea nor a new idea nor an entirely thought out idea, but is it odd to anyone else that Bosh automatically is part of the 2010 max contract club? His stats are incredible. He is surely not the problem for the Raptors, but don't you want a max contract guy to be more than not the problem, but an actual problem solver? Anyway, I apologize in advance for Bosh's 40 point, 20 rebound game tonight.

Keys to the game:

  1. Hawks front court exceeds their averages in rebounding and points. Raptors front court falls short of theirs.
  2. Raptors making three or less more three pointers than the Hawks.
  3. Marvin Williams is aggressive.

Go Hawks!

Let's just say I am less than thrilled about this game

Toronto is going to be playing desperate basketball. Not good for us without Joe and the second night of a back to back. Our frontcourt should rebound like their life depended on it. I expect a big game from Smoove. He’s been coasting a little lately.

Bet it hit the rim!

cant wait for this one.

should be good but then again it can go both ways. A good game for marv to step up

Why is there a space between Lyons and Spakowski?

by Bronn on Mar 17, 2010 7:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Joe is out correct?

I wanna see what Teague does since so many cry for playing time. We know Toronto does not care for defense so if he can do anything offensively you should see it tonite

Calderon just got his starting job back from Jack...

What better way to solidfy your position at PG than to be guarded by Bibby. Calderon will be the bane of our existence.

i am continually amazed that Woody

has never realized there are easier ways to post up than someone running down the court and standing 18 feet from the basket as “the play.”

by hawksdawgs on Mar 17, 2010 7:28 PM EDT reply actions

I agree

I was watching Stansbury get Varnardo to the rim in that Kentucky game and I think Stansbury is a horrible coach I am starting to soar on Woody

by Truthspitter on Mar 17, 2010 7:29 PM EDT up reply actions

To Stansbury's credit

Varnado was a 200 pounder going against 240 pounders in the post.

by Bronn on Mar 17, 2010 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Correct

That’s why I am soaring on Woody, Al is a small center and Josh a small PF he needs to get them on the move, what they call rim runs

by Truthspitter on Mar 17, 2010 7:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Box score was very undstated

“Chris Bosh misses shot. Chris Bosh offensive rebound. Hedo Turkoglu misses shot. Hedo Turkoglu offensive rebound. Hedo Turkoglu misses reverse lay-up. Al Horford defensive rebound.”

by Hawksgirl on Mar 17, 2010 7:37 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Teague

Needs to learn to finish, maybe try the back-board out. Josh has taken 2 too many jump shots and Jamal and even Bibby are playing too fast almost out of control, so is Hortford. They all need to settle down

Josh Smith is 5-8

on shots he should be taking. He’s 0-4 on jump shots.

And his jumpshots haven’t even been like 12 footers. They’ve all been with one foot on the line, or practically on it.

2.1 seconds

That’s just time for 2 dribbles and a shot.

by Bronn on Mar 17, 2010 9:34 PM EDT reply actions

Well atleast

U people can’t claim that the Hawks are better without Joe, good night

by Truthspitter on Mar 17, 2010 9:37 PM EDT reply actions

Ladies and gentlemen,

Your 2010-11 Atlanta Hawks.

Other teams in the league run isos and THEY WORK???

by rbubp on Mar 17, 2010 9:37 PM EDT reply actions

Who won?

Why didn’t he get the ball at the end?

by rbubp on Mar 17, 2010 9:42 PM EDT up reply actions

because of Crawford

don’t think that would have been any different with Joe. Actually, Al would have had four less makes in the fourth with Joe.

by hawksdawgs on Mar 17, 2010 9:43 PM EDT up reply actions

this is idiotic to say someone is great or not great

being the go to guy for the first time in his entire career.

and actually performing. Anyone else makes shots in the fourth they win. Al was 5 of 6 in the fourth.

by hawksdawgs on Mar 17, 2010 9:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Would have could have

Quit making claims and prove something, you can’t prove that. This team is not better without Joe, the Raps are the softest team and NBA and we lose to them

by Truthspitter on Mar 17, 2010 9:46 PM EDT up reply actions

If Joe doesn't play against the Bobcats

we will find out. Its tough to play on a back to back on the road. I personally don’t think we are a better team without Joe but I am not sure we would have won that game even with him there. It was just a lack of focus at the end, which happens all the time with Joe in the game as well.

by VAHawksFan on Mar 17, 2010 9:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not even very pro-Joe

…I’m just saying that without him this is an average team at best because there is no go-to guy.

Al and Josh are not those guys. I don;t know how many times this sort of scenario has to happen before people realize who those two are: Above average.

by rbubp on Mar 17, 2010 9:47 PM EDT up reply actions

..Even if Horford played well at the end...

it was Toronto, who has no interior defense. And still, outscored 31-19 in the fourth.

Al really took over.

by rbubp on Mar 17, 2010 9:43 PM EDT up reply actions

did you watch the last three minutes?

he made three straight baskets. stopped Bosh twice, once blocking his shot.

by hawksdawgs on Mar 17, 2010 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions

It doesn;t matter

at the end Bosh won the game and Al did not.

END OF STORY.

by rbubp on Mar 17, 2010 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions

that makes no sense

so if Jamal makes that last shot, Al is better than Chris Bosh for outplaying in the fourth?

you can’t make those kind of statements based on one game. Al was the reason they were close.

by hawksdawgs on Mar 17, 2010 9:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Had Joe been there, i would have still given the ball to Jamal.

When is the last time Joe had a buzzer beating game winner? Two seasons ago maybe against philly?

Bet it hit the rim!

Not entirely, anyway.

by rbubp on Mar 17, 2010 9:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Drew, do this for me:

Post a poll on who the Hawks’ go-to guy is without Joe.

I submit that the answer will be all over the place. And when it is iy will prove my point: Al has a good game, Marvin and Josh suck. The next game Marvin is great and Al sucks. And then the third game…you know where I’m going. And at no point do ANY of them command a double-team. Ever.

You can’t have a contending team that does not have ONE go-to guy as THE man.

by rbubp on Mar 17, 2010 9:54 PM EDT up reply actions

you have no evidense of that

because none of those guys have been asked to be the go to guy, night in and night out.

i would contend that Horford rarely if ever sucks. He certainly sucks much less than Joe sucks.

joe is not a go to guy. his fourth quarter stats from a efficiency stand point are some of the worst in the league for his usage.

by hawksdawgs on Mar 17, 2010 9:57 PM EDT up reply actions

joe is just given the ball

we have no ideas what would happen if Al was given the ball.

telling a team to give the ball to bigs with 15 games to go for one game is a tall order when they are used to guards.

a new season with that mindset could easily be different. we don’t know. to make bold claims about how it can’t work makes no sense to me. Especially after tonight.

by hawksdawgs on Mar 17, 2010 9:59 PM EDT up reply actions

IN FACT,

Al is “just given the ball” about 15 times a game. And he passes the ball out of the post most of the time.

WHY does he do that, I wonder?

that I have to go with the groupthink that the team’s better off without Joe Johnson? That’s what this argument is about.

by rbubp on Mar 18, 2010 12:22 AM EDT up reply actions

Yes

I agree I am a Hawksfan and I don’t get these guys. Marvin is great and Joe is not needed. What a bunch of jokes.

i would never say Al is fantastic in the post

but to come on tonight and say he could not be dominant and to call his game tonight average is dumb. it is wrong. it is coming with an agenda.

he created shots for others in the first half and dominated with moves in the fourth.

by hawksdawgs on Mar 17, 2010 10:05 PM EDT up reply actions

also i think the Hawks would be much better if they did not play like one guy was the star

because to be honest, there is no true alpha dog on the team, just guys playing one.

by hawksdawgs on Mar 17, 2010 10:08 PM EDT up reply actions

oh i agree this team has no identity

i think with the passing and athleticism of Josh and Al, this team could easily have one playing through them.

three point shooters, guys willing to move without the basketball, and the offense running through Horford and Josh would be very, very good.

I never called his game "average."

I said it was “above average.”

By the way, I went back and watched the first half again. The Raps doubled down on Al three times the whole half. One other time they were in a zone and he caught a pass at the top of the key and three guys ran at him (because they are so bad at defense). Another time he screened for Crawford while still holding the ball on the wing. Wasn’t a double-down.

I can’t actually understand why they doubled down at all, frankly. At least two of the three times Al was far from the basket and had not moved into scoring position, and it was like they doubled just to get him to pass the ball away, which of course he did. Bargnani is a really crappy defender who would need help, but the Raps put the great Amir Johnson on Al and that pretty much ended any first-half production. Bosh was on him briefly and Al did get hi to foul a couple of times (not always leading to free throws).

At some times it is actually desirable to shoot through a double-team—if you have the ball deep enough to draw a foul, or if you have a path for a good shot. In two of the three doubles, Al did not have a shot and passed out immediately for a long jumper. It barely counted as inside-out, really.

Nonetheless, three double-teams per half is not exactly stretching a defense.

by rbubp on Mar 18, 2010 12:20 AM EDT up reply actions

joe johnson dribbles into three double teams a half. he is never EVER doubled right away three times in a half.

and it is good for Wade to dribble through double teams. Not Centers. Johnson never dribbles through double teams. He either creates a shot, forces a shot, or dribbles backwards and waste five seconds of the shot clock.

unless you are a Wade or LeBron and have the speed, athleticism and handle to break doubles, it is always better to pass out of them. if the other four guys play good basketbal on your team, you are going to get a wide open shot.

also, they didn’t double him in the fourth, and he owned them. Against Bosh, probably considered the second best power forward in the league.

by hawksdawgs on Mar 18, 2010 8:04 AM EDT up reply actions

I disagree.

Getting to the foul line is the single best play in the NBA other than a dunk or uncontested layup—consider that virtually every player in the league shoots at least 60% from the line, How many shoot 60% from teh field?

And yes, Joe Johnson’s inability to get to the line keeps the Hawks from being a legit contender.

BTW, getting to the line is why it’s ok for centers to shoot through double-teams too, and this simple numerical fact is why drawing a shooting foul is always a better-percentage play than passing out for a long jumper (possibly excepting when a three is needed).

It's funny...

spacing and who benefits from it…no one ever double-teams Al because even one-on-one many centers can stop him. He doesn’t even play in the paint half the time.

Have you not noticed that most of his points from jumpers when he has been left alone? Because others were being attended to?

How about charting where Horford’s point come from, then? I’ll wager 50% of them come on those kind of “left-alone” shots.

of his five fourth quarter makes

one was him moving without the ball and a great pass by Josh. The rest were grown man moves.

Talking about the whole year

so that a real understanding of his potential as a go-to guy can be ascertained. Not just against the weakest defensive team in the league.

stunned

this really hurts – Marvin you owe fans an apology

by ATLpaul on Mar 17, 2010 9:39 PM EDT reply actions

Is that something new

Marvin has owed fans apology since day 1

by Truthspitter on Mar 17, 2010 9:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Dammit Marvin

i bet chris paul wouldnt have stepped out

by Throw on Mar 17, 2010 9:40 PM EDT reply actions

Well...

not necessarily Marvin’s fault we blew that lead. His box out on the missed free throw, however, can be considered an epic failure.

by VAHawksFan on Mar 17, 2010 9:45 PM EDT reply actions

Marvin stats

one out of 10, how do you not blame him for a game that is like sleep walking??? The guy is horrible

by ATLpaul on Mar 17, 2010 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions

There are five players on the court at any given time

one player doesn’t account for blowing an eight point lead with two minutes left. Josh Smith failed to play defense on a few plays including a crucial three point basket by Bargnani down the stretch, that doesn’t make it just his fault we lost the game. If we hadn’t blown the lead as is the custom these days, Marvin wouldn’t be getting the flack for failing to box out. It’s a team game.

by VAHawksFan on Mar 17, 2010 9:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Then you are ignoring the facts about him

while he missed shot after shot, the last failure to block out makes this absolutely on him

by ATLpaul on Mar 17, 2010 9:54 PM EDT up reply actions

i bet he is going to kiss and make up after this

At least Smoove has the manhood not to shake that idiot Turkuglou’s hand after the loss

by ATLpaul on Mar 17, 2010 9:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Haha yeah...

I would have been too upset to shake the Hedo’s hand. Oh well, lets hope we show up against the Bobcats. Tough ending…

by VAHawksFan on Mar 17, 2010 9:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

I am now a complete Josh fan he has some Lebron in him, damn sportsmanship you lost. Give me Josh, Joe,and Al get rid of Marvin I’m sorry but Marvin just is an absolute bust

by Truthspitter on Mar 18, 2010 2:33 AM EDT up reply actions

Alright kiddies settle down

game was easily winnable. but they didn’t follow through

Atlanta will win a championship....someday

by maxxj3 on Mar 17, 2010 9:59 PM EDT reply actions

You are right

but i am almost crying – ahhhh well

by ATLpaul on Mar 17, 2010 9:59 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess you could say Josh is the barometer of this team

I agree, when he feels like it, he can be dominate. But why or why does Josh take long jumpers? the world may never know. I insist that whoever interviews the hawks ask Josh WHY DO YOU TAKE SCHOOLYARD “I DON’T CARE WHAT YOU THINK” JUMPERS? Say it real loud too…

Atlanta will win a championship....someday
