Can We Really Land Big Z
I hope so. At first I was adverse to the move, but if the AJC is right then I may be okay with it. The AJC hinted that if we were to get Ilgauskus (sp?) then he would be our starting center, Josh would move to the 3 and Horford to the 4. Josh and Al moving positions would be the biggest impact of the move, especially if Josh continues to hit his jumpers. Even then, Z is a jump shooter, thus he can stretch the defense and allow Josh and Al to post up the smaller defenders. The key is, can Z guard the opposing teams big man which is our issue. At his size you would assume so. Overall, I would welcome him if this were the situation especially for the veteran minimum. Could we win a championship, not sure, but I think we could get to the conference finals (possibly).
Now after all this typing, do we have a real shot to get him? The only reason Z does not return to Cleveland is playing time. He won't get much in Cleveland if he returns. If the big man still thinks he can go, we have a legitimate shot at him, but so does Utah, Denver and Dallas. Stay tuned!!!

I'd personally...
rather Z join Crawford as 6th/7th man getting starter’s minutes. I just can’t see Josh having enough offensive ability on the outside to be effective at the 3. He needs to play C if only to force his butt around the paint. Letting him play SF would only reinforce his foolish idea that he’s productive standing around the 3 pt line (instead of the paint).
More important than Big Z joining the Hawks
I believe Big Z will help if he wants to join, though I would think it is unlikely for a player to join us and play more minutes and not go back to the team that stood by him while he was injured all these years. I would say we have about a 2% chance of landing him at best
More importantly, to me are the cries of help needed that I am hearing from Lion Horf. It is clear he needs help against big centers, and he knows that fighting out of position is a losing proposition. Where was old Sund and ownership before the trading deadline? I really think all we need is a big center that is a defensive rebounding center. He may even come off the bench, but play majority of minutes. Lion and Smoove can co-exist. Lion has a dependable enough outside shot, that we won’t miss Marvin’s shooting in a starting line-up.
Old Sund needs to listen to our players more and act as more than a care taker. He and this ownership are the ones that did not make any moves to help our front line before the trading deadline. As is, we are not close to Cavs or Magic. We may have to live with what we have till after the season.
Getting big Z would be a great signing for Atl.
He would not start at center, I just don’t see Woody changing the starting line, nor should he, they have played a lot of minutes together and are as a good a starting five as any in the league. He would be great in taking minutes off Horf and Smoove and his jump shooting would cover some of Zaza’s offensive deficiencies if you put them both on the floor at the same time.
The number one problem in matchups for the Hawks is Orlando, hands down. Josh is key for success this season, but against the Magic, I could see a front court of Big Z, Al, and Marvin logging minutes and creating better matchups.
Ok, During Hawks/Mavs game it was reported that Woody would start Z and move Al to the four position.
I think that would be a mistake, Al/Josh is a good combo, but I don’t see Josh playing small forward.

the real question is
how long would he sign for and how will it affect our ability to re-sign broadway Joe or another big name all-star?
I think we could resign him
We have exceptions available to sign him and with guys like Joe Smith, Jason Collins working one year deals and Randolph Morris coming off the books, that would free $3-$4 million available after signing Joe while still avoiding the luxury tax. So we can sign, the question will be, will we want to.

See Antonio McDyess...
rumors can float around with a number of other teams. Until a deal is announced, I’ll believe he’s headed back to Cleveland and not a second before.
Z would be fine if he replaced Morris or Collins as just another big man option off the bench. I don’t see what the Hawks would gain by starting him over Marvin and forcing Josh out of position. There’s really only a couple of centers in the league that Horford doesn’t hold his own against, and Z at this point in his career isn’t going to defend Dwight Howard better than Al anyway. There’s no reason to disrupt the starting lineup this late in the season.
