Why does everyone seem to think smoove is a hazard?
Well yea he and woody have had their times but he is really a hardworking player and seems to get along with all his teammates and takes constructive criticizm from his teammates.
“And since he’s fleeing Atlanta this summer, it seems like the perfect time to mention that I’d renew my seats for a Kaman-Griffin-Johnson-Gordon-Baron starting five next season.”
He does not know if jj is leaving or not. Every journalist(except you) seems to think jj is going for money or just flat out leaving. Cant they just see it through like were trying to do?
His criticizm of montae was unwarranted as well.(I have a sweet spot for montae since Im a major fan since forever.) I think montae is great……..
I like Monte to
i think that system Nellie runs isnt to good for him in another system he could be a better player
He doesn't understand NBA salary rules
Odds are, no one will be able to offer him more than Atlanta will.
I never bother reading Bill Simmons
because he doesn’t know anything about teams outside of Boston and Los Angeles. He apparently doesn’t realize that Monte Ellis is for real either…
While Simmons can be close-minded on many issues (geographically speaking)...
he is a downright savant when it comes to the NBA salary cap structure and he understands basketball talent better than most. If you read his book, you realize how knowledgeable he is about all things NBA. He would be a better GM than 95% of the current GMs in the league.
Re: Smoove — Simmons was extremely nice about him. He said it is wonderful when a player decides to eliminate their negative aspects, as Josh has done this year. Ranking him 22 is very solid (and remember, this isn’t a list of “best players”, but of best players considering all contract considerations).
Lastly, he hates on ATL and other similar cities for a legitimate reason. We have inept ownership and our fan base doesn’t fill the arena, so the team continues to hemmorhage money.
I don't know why I felt the need to come to his defense
but sometime I think people take what he writes too seriously. Everything he writes is tongue-in-cheek, and he is the first to admit that he’s full of it most of the time. He’s there more for humor and alternative journalism than serious, Hollinger-like analysis.
Totally off the subject but....
Does anybody remember the game where we had back to back blocks on one play? I think Marvin blocked somebody’s shot, they got the offensive rebound, and either Smoove or Al blocked the next shot attempt. Something like that…I’m looking for the highlight, but I cannot remember what game that was.
That was against Memphis right?
Al blocked a shot, Memphis rebound, and Smooth blocked the put-back.
Got it
Let’s see, I think it was Mayo on the initial shot, but I’m certain it was Zach Randolph getting the rebound and going up, only to have Smoove come from behind to get that one.
Interestingly, I think we only got one block the entire rest of the game.
off topic but
has anyone seen the TBJ Does Dallas: All-Star Valentine’s Day video? It is hilarious. Its on the hawksblog. That is a must see. JJ and al are on there as well
Some interesting praise for the Hawks players
My favorite was the comparison of Al with Andrew Bynum. If you look at the stats they’re essentially the same player. The only difference is Al has been a more consistent rebounder (though Bynum did come straight outta high school) and Al costs a whole hell-of-a-lot less (though Bynum does score slightly more).
Another thing
His critique of Dwight Howard being “too nice and happy” is something that plagues Horford, as well. As you mention, axhfan, Bynum scores more than Al, but I think Al is entirely capable of significantly increasing his scoring numbers. He just needs to get nasty and demand the ball. Much of the blame goes on his teammates and Woody, who inexplicably limit his touches. In the same way that Dwight is capable of being one of the most dominant big men ever if he got the ball more often, Al could be top 2 or 3 at his position (small center? haha) with a little pushing.
Really good point DC
It may have something to do with there always being a shoot-first guard on the floor, or the lack of recognition of Horf as the franchise player. I think Al stays quiet because he doesn’t see himself as the star of the team.
Bill Simmons is dead on 90% of the time.
If things remain as they are JJ would be a fool resign with the Hawks. He wants a title and the team as constructed can’t do it. Now if we get to the ECF or make a move in the summer this could all change how he feels, but right now 4th should not cut it for JJ. Look at this way, we have essentially the same record as Boston and Orlando, but they are considered to be having down years.
So wait,
You think Chicago or New York w/o JJ is better constructed than the Hawks w/o JJ? And even though we have the same record as Boston and Orlando, we are better than Boston. I think JJ would be a fool if he didn’t return to Atlanta. he’s making what 15 million a year and he can get what 17 million as a max player? we might as well sign him to the max.
NYK/Chicago w/ only JJ
is assuming this is the only guy they get. Those two teams are willing to go into the luxury realm and could potentially add way more than just JJ. Understand where the Hawks sit. If we sign JJ to 17, that’s pretty much it. We are stuck with the current roster. Josh, Crawf, Bibby, Zaza and Marvin are signed long term. Al Horford will be restricted, but he could go elsewhere if he chose to. If I’m Joe looking at that, unless this team really shows me something this year I’m going to a better team. This team doesn’t have a whole lot more room to grow. And in a few instances (bibby) there is nothing more than decline to come.

Just so we're clear
Joe has nothing to do with the fact that the Hawks are only 4th? What do you mean that shouldn’t cut it for JJ? I mean seriously, please explain to me how the people around Joe are failing him.
@cocoqt81
huh?
Joe and all the other players are exactly why we’re 4th. I’m not blaming him. You totally misread my comment. I’m saying for Joe being on the east 4th best team should not be enough. With opportunity to move he should take it and try to go to an opportunity that provides a better situation for a title.
