Regarding Horford's contract once up...

I posted this earlier but the topic since then has been bumped down.

Will we be able to retain Al Horford after his contract is up? Assuming that we lock Joe Johnson up to a multi-year, close to the maximum contract, will we have enough money to sign Horford next offseason? I’m asking because I’m not exactly a cap expert so I’m just wondering if we’d have to move Marvin or someone else’s larger contract to make room for Horford’s extension.

What do you guys think?

Yes we can...

especially if the ownership is willing to spend into luxury tax range.

Personally though, I prefer letting Joe walk if he demands max money and hoping Horford will sign a deal similar to Josh Smith’s. If so, that would make for a very good, but relatively cheap front court and leave plenty of money to spend on the backcourt and bench.

I think It may work out

And if we get deep enough into the playoffs this year, jj will more than likely take the original offer. but if we know the front office, he will get his contract

you can go over the cap to sign your own players

so it is on the Hawks to spend the money, but it is easily done.

the question will be if Joe Johnson gets max money, and Horford gets close to max or at least Josh Smith money, will the ownership be willing to spend money into the luxury tax to have people like Jamal around or will they have great starters and a bench full of Mo Evans.

Pony up the dough

The Celtics,Cavs and Orlando each have total salaries that are at least 15 million higher than the Hawks. I heard ownership say that they dont mind going over the cap if the team is a contender. Now it the time for them to pay.

Yes, I can tell he loves his time in Atlanta and wants to stay

so i think he might take up any contract they offer him

Horford is indespensable

Who else would be our center? There are rarely quality bigmen in the league, and even though JJ does a lot, there are many more talented guards/forwards than bigmen. May be we’ll find another Joe Johnson, and by that i mean a player that has played for a team with a limited role and is ready for the next level.
