Was the Marvin pick really that bad?

I'm new here and don't kow if this has been discussed before, but how bad was the Marvin Williams pick.

Well Deron Williams, Chris Paul, and Danny Granger all are stars in the nba and all went after Marvin Williams in the 2005 NBA draft.

Williams( who I say is the best PG in the NBA) went 3rd, Paul went 4th, and Granger went 15th( i believe), Williams went 2ndBut my question is, is how bad of a pick was this

Well is we drafted one of those 3, we wouldn't have ended up with Al Horford( should be all-star), but also we wouldn't have ended up with Sheldon Williams( idk what he's doing), but sheldon is the main piece for bibby

We could indeed have Deron Williams or CP3, but would we actually be better

I could absolutly argue that Sheldon was a worse pick than Marvin, cinsidering Marvin is productive and Rudy Gay, Brandon Roy, and Randy Foye are the 3 picks after Sheldon

so i get to my qustion, was the Marvin pick that bad?

I answer no, it would be nice to have the best PG in the NBA, but its also nice to have a PF that averages a double-double and a good PG

I say ITS COMPLICATED...lol

this discussion has went on forever

But its good to see some positive feed. basically both sides of the deal from a fan. but the deal was okay for me. But out of the other picks, the hawks have arguebly (think I spelled it wrong) made the best progress. marv is doing extremely well this year although it took him a while.

IDK if i like it or not, its very complicated because if we got Deron we dont have Bibby, Marvin or Horford but maybe we draft Roy or Gay instead.. idk very complicated

I still wanna see Marvin...

with a little more responsibility on offense. He has the talent, it just seems hidden inside his shell.

so true

Marv has to bust out just like jj is overdue to bust out of the isolation that he has done for four years. marv isn’t used to having that much opportunity but he has shown some skills that I want to see more of

lol yeaaa I guess for a gal lol

But I liked sheldon til he became a bust and I would take al and BIBBY over Roy or any one player because Roy hasn’t takin his team as far as BIBBY and al have takin the hawks and the run still isn’t over yet.

I suggest you check out this other fanpost that looks in depth at the alternate realities that could have been if the Hawks hadn’t drafted Marvin:

http://www.peachtreehoops.com/2009/12/10/1194831/chris-paul-minus-al-horford

My short answer is yes the pick was that bad. The Hawks already had Smith and Childress to play forward. Picking Deron Williams or Chris Paul would have been much better choices and they wouldn’t have had to later pick Law and Teague or trade for Bibby. Horford is of course a very nice player, but he’s not on the level of Amare Stoudamire or Chris Bosh (yet). The Hawks almost surely would be better without him but with one of those elite PGs.

We could debate this until we're blue in the face

but it stil won’t change the fact that if we had taken CP or DW who’s to say Woody would have developed them anymore than he’s done anybody else? It’s neither here nor there. I have no problem with Marv. His game has definitely changed because Woody has inserted JC in the lineup more often than not. I still think there is an up side to Marvin. Woody should just utilize him properly and let him play to his strengths.

There is only one problem with these theories and postulations....

The determining factor is whether the HEAD coach would be willing to alter his coaching philosophy to better utilize a point gaurd as the primary offensive weapon. ISO is not what a PG should do with the dribble. A point guard should a) use the dribble to break down the defense and b) distribute the ball accordingly. The JOE ISO is not used in that fashion. Therefore, the question is " Even with the acquisition of CP3 instead of Marvin Williams, does the offensive scheme change to better utilize the PG position?"
All posts and replies to this topic since that draft has effectively alienated the MAIN issue and assumed that the offensive scheme would change with CP3 at the helm. BUT would it?
Honestly, with the same offensive philosophy from the HEAD coach, I believe the effects of change would be minimal at best!

STOP SAYING CP3… I specifically said Deron Williams because D-Will is better than CP3. Period no complaining i can argue that till i die that D will is better than Cp3

You guys might not know this, but I consider myself a bit of a loner. I tend to think of myself as a one-man wolf pack. But when my sister brought Doug home, I knew he was one of my own. And my wolf pack... it grew by one. So there... there were two of us in the wolf pack... I was alone first in the pack, and then Doug joined in later. And six months ago, when Doug introduced me to you guys, I thought, "Wait a second, could it be?" And now I know for sure, I just added two more guys to my wolf pack. Four of us wolves, running around the desert together, in Las Vegas, looking for strippers and cocaine. So tonight, I make a toast! - The Hangover

re: Marvin

The problem with Marvin going so high in the draft is he was an unproven player in college. He played only one year at UNC-Chapel Hill and he wasn’t even a starter ! They drafted on “potential” because of his athleticism and NBA prototype frame. Terrible pick.. Not that I don’t like Marvin, but way too high a pick, especially when we needed a PG ever since Mookie left the team. As for Sheldon, he just didn’t fit in with the chemistry.

I have to agree

With everyone that says Marv was not the pick the hawks NEEDED at two. I have nothing against Marv (except that he disappears occasionally on offense) but at that time they needed a point guard. This, I believe, goes to show you how deep Woody and Billy Knight go. All the subsequent point guards we drafted had not had their time to shine. I believe there’s a point guard discrimination going on. lol
