A brief reminder where Mike Woodson doesn't make his money.

In the Mike Woodson era, the Atlanta Hawks have lost 11 playoff games. The average margin of defeat in those losses was over twenty-two points a game. Twenty-two! That is borderline unsportsmanlike by the other team. And since I am one who believed a healthy Hawks team could have stolen at least a game from the Cavs, I will let Woody off the hook for those four losses. Oh wait, that pushes the margin to over twenty-five points a contest. You may not have known this, but that Cavs series was an example of Mike Woodson's coaching skills keeping it close.

Piling on? Over simplifying? A little mean to point out in September? Yes, yes, and probably.

Excusable for a coach? No.

i did have a dream that hawks acquired ricky rubio for nothing. dreaming about ricky rubio is weird on a number of levels.

Reminds me of the Tweet you issued yesterday

to quoth @peachtreehoops:

woodson, making hawks fans look at things 1/2 empty since 2005

And as I responded—it’s funny ‘cause it’s true…

Woody bashers here you go!

Okay guys I know you love bashing Woody, but I could not disagree more with this post. Okay, how about looking at the big picture? How about taking the Celtics to 7 games ..Very Impressive, How about going to the second round of the playoffs the next year ..Very good. You can go around looking for negatives ( PS you will find it with any team).
The fact is that the Hawks are a young team and young teams are very inconsistent. That has nothing to do with the coach. Isn’t it funny that he only mentioned the losses without mentioning the wins? Oh… Just to help you out, the average margin of win in the Woodson era is over 13 points .

by dkrib on Sep 15, 2009 11:38 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Actually, it's not over 13

It’s 12.43pts/w over the seven wins from last year and this year. I love your logic though, the Hawks win and Woodson did it, the Hawks lose, and it’s the players fault. Seems sound to me…

Check your stats

Jesse28. Please recheck your stats..It is 13.43 not 12.43. thats besides the point. If you are going to blame Woody for losing by double digits, then why dont you give him credit for winning by double digits????

by dkrib on Sep 15, 2009 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

done and done

26,10,15,19,9,5,&3 ar the win margins for the seven playoff games per Basketball-Reference.com. Thats 87 total points, divided by seven games, that gives you an average of 12.43pts/w. So, either Basketball-Reference is missing some points or your source is wrong.

Very inconsistent.

I did not say the Hawks lose and its the players fault. I said they are very inconsistent which means they LOSE and also WIN by large margins. This is common with young teams.

You’re right, you didn’t say that at all.

The “young team” card is going to be extremely overplayed, soon.

Mike Bibby: 11 years experience
Joe Johnson: 8
Marvin Williams: 4
Josh Smith: 5
Al Horford: 2
Mo Evans: 8
Zaza: 6
(Flip Murray): 7

I really don’t want that card to come out this year now that we’ve added:

Jamal Crawford: 9
Joe Smith: 14
Jason Collins: 8

Haha

No, that’s not what I’m saying at all. I’m saying the consistency in which we get blown out in playoff losses is Woodson’s fault, not that we simply lost.

i disagree with you. but i respect your opinion. i am glad you post it. it is good for the blog. and i probably bash woody too much. but it certainly deserved in some respect.

i will also say this. 95% of it comes down to the players if you have a serviceable coach. so of course if Hawks hit shots they have a better chance to win and if they don’t, they will probably lose.

but the players clearly fed off the home crowd in the boston series more than anything else. and with the losses so extreme, it seems woody has no answer to counter act an off night. if you lose big every time you have an off night even when you are the better team, the coach might not be the best game time adjuster/motivator.

coaches don’t make money when the team is drilling. they make it when the team is struggling. that being said you can’t really blame woodson for losing by 30 in game seven. there is enough blame/reasons to spread quite far there.

REQUEST

Please I would love for us to have a record of our predictions about what you think the Hawks should acheive this year assuming they have the best coach in the world. Not only you but all the Woody bashers. Then, at the end of the season we will compare their result to the predictions. If they achieve it, you all will promise to advocate for a Woody extension:))) LOL.
The predictions should be clear and measurable..E.g. 50 wins and conference final not ambigious like " develop Teague" or " use Joe less". Why am I saying this? Because before the start of last season, I said that given the team on hand, if they finish 4th and get to the seond round , it will be a very good season. THEY DID IT SO I CANNOT FAULT ANYONE OR BLAME ANYONE.
Whether they did it by running Joe to the ground or not playing Acie Law is secondary to the goal of the season.

2009-10 Goals

2nd round of the playoffs, better showing in the second round (win 2 games)

I don’t care how they get there, what there seed is or how many reg season games they win. If they do, give Woody 2 more years

Regardless of how many wins....

If your guys do not respect you, then you’re fighting a losing battle. My problem with Woody, (and I’ve stuck up for him more times than not) is that he fails to inspire them. I truly believe those guys are natural born competitors, but for that extra umph they need some nights, he falls way short. I look at their mannerisms towards him. Some of those guys barely make eye contact with him. They don’t have to necessarily like him, but they do have to respect him in order to succeed. Just like when Bibby got him told about Josh. Something in Woody’s brain should have clicked and said, “You’re right. Why do the plays I call leave Josh roaming around the perimeter? Why does Al get so little touches? Why is Joe torn down at the end of the season? Why do we switch on every play?” So riddle me this? Because we were exposed for our lack of offense in the second round of the playoffs (forget the injuries),whose responsibility was it to come up with offensive schemes? As a parent, I can teach my children the way to go, ultimately it’s up to them to put that knowledge to good use. They don’t have to love me. Hell, they’re not even required to like me, but I’ll be damned if they don’t respect me. There is no difference here.

To channel Woodson for a second, with annotations.

THIS TEAM IS GROWING TOGETHER AND MOVING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION (Never mind we’re not going to point out that the rest of the team can’t stand Josh Smith from their on court demeanor, or that Woodson never specifies what this team’s goal actually is.)

WE CAME OUT FLAT TONIGHT (Woodson sucks as a coach. If anything, the pre-game and halftime locker room meetings serve to deflate the team.)

THEY NEED TO LEARN ABOUT PROFESSIONAL BASKETBALL (Isn’t that your job genius?)

Again, how this guy still has a job is completely, totally, utterly beyond me. He must have great photos of ownership doing something as a group to livestock.
