Williams as an unrestricted free agent could have received closer to $50 million, even in this climate. He's a stellar defender at the small forward spot, agile and looooong. But during his first three seasons, Williams's offense lagged and his instincts weren't quite developed. He worked hard last summer to develop a jumper ... and it worked! He went from quizzical to stud in one season, and he's one of the more promising small forwards in the league as a result.
I think Ziller knows much more about basketball than me, so I hope his greater optimism is more based in reality than my own slightly less excited (but still excited) approach to Marvin.

Hawks did the right thing
Signing a 23 year old guy with 4 years nba experience in our offense and major upside was the right move. Marvin is capable of putting up 20pts and 8 boards on a regular basis. He probably never will score like that with Woodson’s “run the shot clock out and pass it to JJ” offense but a young, experienced guy with top notch athleticism who is both willing and able to play terrific defense is REALLY hard to come by in the NBA. We got him for a fair price and it will probably look like a bargain after next years free agency free-for-all. I wouldn’t be surprised if Marvin was our best player in a couple of years.
You say Ziller knows much more about basketball than you, but this line is puzzling:
He worked hard last summer to develop a jumper … and it worked!
All of us who watched Marvin two years ago knew that he had a good jumpshot, and all he needed to do was extend his range by about 2 feet. We saw countless jumpshots in ‘07-’08 taken just a step inside the 3 point line and drained. This leads me to hope he could potentially become an ever better shooter.
true enough
and this article is also a bit weird http://www.sportingnews.com/blog/The_Baseline/entry/view/29008/glut?_what_glut?hawks,marvin_williams_stay_together
maybe no one actually watches Hawks games. or maybe i am a basketball genius.
yes ok fine, it’s the former.
No one actually watches Hawks games
except us!!!! That’s why I don’t give a damn about what national writers think about Coach Woodson or the Hawks. I know they’re just making ish up. And I finally wrote something!

He probably was referring to the 3-point shooting.
At least I hope so.
You're right
That article was very weird.
“Marvin Williams has improved every year in the league. Marvin is being paid solely on his potential”
“No one was interested in Marvin because he didn’t get an offer. But then again, the fact that no one low-balled him means teams value him. Marvin Williams had no leverage in this market. Marvin Williams signed a market-value contract.”
Most articles present information, discuss some background, and lead you somewhere. This reads more like a stream-of-consciousness bit of prose that’s kind of about Marvin Williams, kind of about Atlanta, and kind of about NBA Free agency, but the guy does take time to linger when he mentions Andrew Bogut (at least specifically enough to say that the Hawks screwed up in the draft, but Milwaukee didn’t).
