Go Hawks!

Poll
Who should the Hawks draft if the team stays at 19? All of these players are mock drafted somewhere as high as 17 but if you do not think a certain player will be available, do not pick them.

How could you leave him off?

From Brett’s write ups, Collison sounds like the best fit for what the Hawks need: a very good scorer who is also a good defender. It doesn’t really matter though because it’s not like Woodson is actually going to play whoever gets picked at 19th for the next 2 years assuming the Hawks re-sign Bibby or sign/trade for a different veteran PG.

Mullens, Collison, and Holiday are all no-no’s for me. I don’t need a write up I watch the sport. All 3 guys were disappointments on the college level.

Lawson is unlikely to make it to Atlanta, but I just feel he’s the perfect type of player for Woodson. He’s got lots of college experience playing at the very highest level, which should help him work his way into the rotation, and he’s also got upside.

And if Bibby doesn’t come back, the best thing for this team is to resign Marvin and play an up-tempo game. Ty Lawson played a fast-break oriented offense at UNC, and assuming his improved jumpshot is legit, he’d be a great option for running it with the guys we have. And Acie would be able to serve as a good change-up with his size advantage; I’m sure he’d hate to come off the bench behind a rookie, but, well, this team has already made it clear that they don’t really value him.

Lawson seems like a solid choice but not noticeably better or worse than any of 4 or 5 other options. I kind of doubt after the experience with Acie Law that they are going to turn over the starting PG position to a 19th pick rookie regardless of who the pick is. Some “proven veteran” whether it is Bibby or somebody else will almost surely be brought in to start at point.

The Hawks have talked about playing up tempo for the past several years then reverted to form once the season started. I can’t see that changing while Woodson is head coach. It’s more important that they put in a better (any?) half court offense that moves the ball around and takes better advantage of the post players than to run more.

I’d hope that if (as expected) the Hawks don’t want to use Acie as the starter that they’d trade him to free up salary and acquire another draft pick/move up in the draft/acquire bench help.

Jodie Meeks

why not Jodie Meeks?
he could be a top 5 sg in this draft
Jodie Meeks would be the best pick for the Hawks in this years draft

If he comes out, I wouldn’t mind him. He probably has the best chance of all those who will there around the 19th pick of making a serious impact early. He’s the type of back-up SG who could actually spell JJ if Woodson had any faith in young players.

The problem is that we’d essentially have to resign Bibby to play PG, and then you’d likely see Meeks buried on the bench as Woodson continues to force-feed his square peg gameplans down various, unmentionable round holes. Bibby would still be the de-facto #2 to JJ’s #1, and we’d have very few adjustments made while Joe is out of the game, and you’d nearly never see Meeks in the game replacing JJ except in garbage time.

two directions to go in

Draft a PG or Draft a Center/PF. Holiday was my guy, but he has moved so far up it doesn’t look like he will be there at 19. Some boards have Maynor at 19 but it doesn’t look like he will be there either. Conley, Lowry, Westbrook, and others have made young Back up PG popular. We might have that in Acie, but only Woodson knows.
So Since none of my pikcs would be there here are some names that might be available:
Wayne Ellington, Nick Calathes, Tyler Hansborough (yes, he might be the best pick left), or the Casspi dude— bring him off tthe bench for points. In the 2nd Rd get Siller big dude..played DII out of Augusta led his team to the Championship one yr and the final 4 the next…..7ft and 300plus

pick something different this yr

Hoops Hype says we are taking Earl Clark- but their description sounds a lot like J Smoove (Athlete, likes to face the basket, poor shooter). I hope we take a PG even if he is just going to be a solid back up. If we have to take a SF and it seems that alot of the lat draft picks are SF then take one who already has a shot. we had to wait on Marvin to develop a shot this time get one who has it already.
According to Hoops Hype we pass on: Maynor, Teague, and Calathes. I would even take a chance on the french PG Beaubois. And we can move down and still get him. If we can’t get a quilty PG in the 1st RD trade down and get a good back up PG, then go for size and defense in RD 2

Atlanta's pick

I have alway’s thougt if they could get a big man then they could get over the top of the hill. Trade for number two pick with some of thier to many forwards and go after the big man Trabeet to help be competitive in the paint.

by Cowboy 5 Stars on Jun 20, 2009 5:59 AM EDT reply actions

why would we want Trabeet, he is big which is what the hawks need so al can get a more reliable backup even though im a huge fan of how zaza gets the fans and the players pumped with his play in the playoffs, but trabeet is overrated he does not have enough experience and relied solely on size as opposed to skill in college.
