Hawks coach Mike Woodson is not going anywhere.
Hawks general manager Rick Sund made that clear on at least three different occasions Tuesday, on two different sports talk radio shows in the morning and later to me in his office.
Not that it was an issue or anything (laugh track goes here).
Woodson has one year remaining on his contract and Sund, while not confirming or denying any details pertaining to said contract, insisted that the Hawks would indeed "honor Woodson’s contract."

Again,
any moves this team makes will be negated by the fact that this particular head coach is still in place. I’m not saying Mike hasn’t done a commendable job, but the team has gone as far as it can with him. They need a new coach or he needs a new system. Also, having a dead man walking coach on a team full of players whose respect for him lies somewhere between nonexistent and minimal is not a good situation. They either need to extend him (by need I mean they need to if they plan on getting a modicum of effort out of the players) or they need to fire him (by need I mean they NEED to fire him). They cannot go into next season with Woody’s deal expiring. If you thought Smith undermined him before, just wait to see what happens when there’s no guarantee he’ll be the coach going forward.

you raise a great point
what are they waiting to see from Woodson this year? if the team gives up on him or doesn’t.
I would either fire him or extend him. woodson’s expiring contract can be very intriguing…to the players who don’t like him.
and is it a weird situation when you have no worry that your coach will be coveted by another team?

"is it a weird situation when you have no worry that your coach will be coveted by another team?"
That should be the only question Atlanta Spirit asks itself. if we fired Mike Woodson, would he get another head coaching job? I’d have to say the answer is a resounding no!

no surprise
This was pretty much a foregone conclusion. Anybody who thought this messed up ownership group in this economy was going to fire Woodson and pay him and a new coach was kidding himself. What we should be scared about is that they will go ahead and extend him.

Trust me
That simple thought gives me night sweats. And you can count me as one of those who knew that Woodson wasn’t getting fired. This ownership group has proven it has no intention of spending more money that it absolutely has to. They might as well fire the GM and just not have one. Not only would it save them money, but the end effect would be exactly the same as if they were using a GM as their puppet, as they are now.

i concur!!
They might as well not have one if the GM can’t do his job which is to MANAGE. I think the Spirit is taking after the braves owners.
Atlanta will win a championship....someday
