Game Thread #57: Atlanta Hawks @ Denver Nuggets

Next Game

Atlanta Hawks
@ Denver Nuggets

Wednesday, Feb 25, 2009, 9:00 PM EST
The Pepsi Center

Complete Coverage >

WHO: Atlanta (32-24) at Denver (37-20)

WHERE: Sports South, Hawks Radio NetworkNBA Audio League Pass

Hawks Injury Report: Some dude named Craig. Mike Bibby is a game time decision due to a flu bug that is apparently trying to go 12 for 12 with the team. Josh Smith is out for personal reasons.

Nuggets Injury Report: Nene hurt his knee and is out.

Blogging With the Enemy: Pickaxe and Roll (is pixaxe really one word?)

Predicted bane of the Hawks existence: Chauncey Billups, call it a gut feel.

Game Preview:

One would think when two team playing fairly bad basketball meet up that the home team is going to brick slightly few shots and play slightly better mediocre defense.

Hopefully, Josh Smith's personal issues are nothing too serious. Outside of the circumstances though, I think a game off might be in order. Had it been the suspension and not the personal, I would have been perfectly happy. It seems our enigmatic power forward needs some perspective, a little distance. Maybe please let this game off provide him such.

Has anyone else noticed that Dominique only has two keys to the game. Steve Smith had "Smitty's Three pointers." To me the difference between two and three points is worthless generalization and moderately worthless generalization. Step it up Nique.

Three keys to the game.

1. Marvin holds Carmelo to jump shots.

2. Joe takes a lot of advantage of being far and away the best two guard on the floor.

3. Al Horford and Zaza out hustle Kenyon Martin and "the Birdman."

I am a win away from calling this road trip to perfection. Not exactly picking the winning lotto numbers, but hey, let me have something.

You are welcome to root on my prediction in the comments. I will be there.

Go Hawks.

Just to clarify

pickaxe
n.
A pick, especially with one end of the head pointed and the other end with a chisel edge for cutting through roots.

I’ll be among the crowd tonight so I hope Bibby plays so the Hawks can be as close to full strength as possible tonight versus my Nuggets.

Should be a good one – Atlanta is fun to watch, great group of young players.

Should have used this one...

Noun 1. pickaxe – a heavy iron tool with a wooden handle and a curved head that is pointed on both ends; “they used picks and sledges to break the rocks”

Sounds a lot better breaking rocks than cutting through roots! hahaha …

It’ll be interesting to see how Dahntay Jones and JR Smith can defend Joe Johnson. I like how Johnson plays and think he’s been great for the Hawks this season (obviously). He is definitely the man Denver needs to shut down tonight.

btw throughout the last 24 hours

the spread for this game has been getting bigger and bigger. vegas thinks josh smith is more important for this game than i do.

it is at 8.5 right now.

Interesting ...

Trust me … as a Nuggets fan the Hawks could be w/o Bibby and Smith and still easily win this one. Nuggets need to focus and shut this team down.

Any word

on who’s starting in Smith’s place?

The odds-on favorite has to be Pachulia, but I’ll ride the start Mario bandwagon until it rolls pathetically to rather quiet stop.

at this point in the road trip,

i don’t see any other bandwagon less pathetic really.

but no word that i have seen.

bad news

bibby is officially out.

and worse news for you Bronn. Zaza and Flip are starting according to yahoo.

by hawksdawgs on Feb 25, 2009 8:47 PM EST up reply actions

flip murray

is either going for over 25 on 16 or 30 shots. but he is def. going for 25.

by hawksdawgs on Feb 25, 2009 9:12 PM EST reply actions

i hope you are watching this

zaza just dribbled twice four feet from the basket and bounce passed to horford for the slam.

that does not do it justice.

joe catch and shoot

when was the last time that happened?

by hawksdawgs on Feb 25, 2009 9:19 PM EST reply actions

not sure if you can blame horford for that pass

if no player moves on the double team, you still have to pass it.

by hawksdawgs on Feb 25, 2009 9:40 PM EST reply actions

if your center gets a rebound and pushes the ball, beating three of you Hawks down the court by 15 feet, you may need to try harder.

by hawksdawgs on Feb 25, 2009 9:49 PM EST reply actions

please take mario out

he is a spurt guy, not a rotation guy.

by hawksdawgs on Feb 25, 2009 10:07 PM EST reply actions

i just realize marvin had two fouls

so i take it all back.

woodson is the man.

@#$%

this is an ugly 2nd half start.

by da fatchick thrilla on Feb 25, 2009 10:37 PM EST reply actions

if woodson's halftime talk

is anything like his press conference. it leaves a little to be desired.

by hawksdawgs on Feb 25, 2009 10:41 PM EST up reply actions

Oh man

I don’t wanna bring out the stress ball while hoping this nightmare of a road trip would be over already.

by da fatchick thrilla on Feb 25, 2009 10:44 PM EST up reply actions

with that make

al may have ruined my “give al 12 shots and we win” theory.

i blame myself not you al.

by hawksdawgs on Feb 25, 2009 10:46 PM EST reply actions

if the hawks can get it under ten going into the fourth, they have taken the Apollo creed upper cut.

by hawksdawgs on Feb 25, 2009 10:48 PM EST reply actions

acie cannot be endearing himself to woodson

but bibby would not be playing defense close enough to get those fouls. so choose your poison.

by hawksdawgs on Feb 25, 2009 10:54 PM EST reply actions

ok acie

now you are not endearing yourself to me.

by hawksdawgs on Feb 25, 2009 10:55 PM EST reply actions

marvin!

I wish he played like this on nights when all the starters were in.

Without Josh

redwhiteblackblue.blogspot.com

If only we had a Point Guard on our roster capable of playing defense. Why not put Joe on Billups, our PG on whatever craptastic 2 guard they throw at us. I don’t get it. Like Joe needed to worry about Dhanthahahahy Jones. It’s like Woodson is just trying to make his coaching decision their own version of failblog.com. matchupfail.
