Game Preview:

I have no problem admitting it. I love disliking the Celtics. On their ten deep roster, only Ray Allen and Shelden Williams are tolerable. It is like they built the team with human disdain in mind. It is the only reason I can think to sign Rasheed Wallace to the kind of contract they did. The Celtics needed Rasheed. I am more impressed than anything. I think they may have had a sit down with Rondo and told him he needed to step up his ability to be disliked. So he started slugging people. Is any part of this hate healthy? Certainly not, but like so many unhealthy things, it just feels so good.

With the season still so young, games like this will always be important, but they are not season changing. If we look back and say this was the game it all changed, the Hawks are either winning 20 games or 60 this season. Still, as we try to decipher what kind of team this is, you cannot get a better challenge than a healthy Boston Celtics team.

The Hawks very good offense so far is going to be put to a serious test. The Celtics are giving up a league best 88.5 points per game. Josh Smith has been great, but Kevin Garnett does not let anyone just out athlete him. Horford is playing well, but Kendrick Perkins does not give up freebies. And I fully expect Rondo to drive Mike Bibby crazy. The Hawks are going to have play like a team for four quarters if they expect to win. If you are getting hard baskets against Boston all night, you are going to score in the 70s.

Keys to the Game:

  1. Quicken the pace. You can disagree with me, but outside of Joe Johnson, I don't see how the half court game is advantageous for the Hawks. Basically, as the pace quickens, Horford, Josh, and Marvin get scarier and Paul Pierce and KG get less scary. Plus, the Celtics one loss this year was to the fast paced Suns.
  2. Joe Johnson and Jamal Crawford playing well. If they are in rhythm, I don't know who the Celtics can throw out to guard them.
  3. Rebound. I don't want to sound like Dominique and have the same three two points every game, but the Hawks must remain close in the rebound battle. Plain and simple.
  4. Why does Marquis Daniels scare me? Well, he does and so it is a key.

Comment of the Knicks game thread to Duff Man at the low point of the first half:

"Joe's post game comments: Well I am leaving after the season. I figure I owe it to Hawks fans to get Woodson fired as well."

See you in the national tv spot of the game thread.

Go Hawks!

I know, wrong place, but I gotta know...

…what’s up with Marvin Williams?

Seemed like he was improving at the end of last year, maybe starting to justify that #2 overall selection, maybe giving the Hawks a FiveStar starting lineup…and now, this year, nada.

Is it Jamal Crawford’s presence?? Horford doing more on offense??

I kinda like the Hawks’ team (at least, compared to Boston), but I have to be honest. This question is in part fantasy basketball-related. Still…what’s up with him?

ps) Good luck against the Smelts.

by MegaTrollificus on Nov 13, 2009 5:03 PM EST reply actions

joe johnson has played much better at the 3 this year with Jamal at the 2.

that along with mo evans playing well has left Marvin not really knowing where his role is this season. plus, he is missing shots he normally makes.

www.hoopinion.com had a great article today about how marvin is not making the Hawks worse compared to last year just worse compared to Mo Evans and Joe playing the three.

i am not sure we are going to see Marvin take any kind of jump this year, but i think when he figures out his new role he will become much more efficient as the year goes on.

by hawksdawgs on Nov 13, 2009 5:09 PM EST up reply actions

Adds a little more perspective.

Until he plays better Marvins minutes have been 22 and 23 the last two games. Who says Woody can’t adjust. Evans and Jamal have filled the missing minutes. So far so good. Marvin will be bk, Long live Marvin.

Keep in mind it's a post contract year for him too.

I don’t even think you can be naive enough to get upset about that with athletes anymore

That loss to Charlotte really stings

I mean think about it-without that, tonight is a battle for first place. How awesome would that be?

by Bronn on Nov 13, 2009 5:13 PM EST reply actions

and now we have an even 50

reasons why that bobcats game sucked beyond belief.

by hawksdawgs on Nov 13, 2009 5:19 PM EST up reply actions

A win tonight puts us right back in that conversation.

A loss will make us look wide eyed at the next 4 games. All play off teams from last year.

by RivBoatGambler on Nov 13, 2009 5:49 PM EST up reply actions

I am one of the Hawk's biggest fans but.......

If we do ANY of the bad things we’ve done in the past 8 games i.e. turnovers, selfish play, and/or no defense, we will once again get our asses handed to us on a national stage. I’m not even pumped up about this game. The last time I was excited about us playing on National TV, we were beat by a zillion points. As much as I hate to admit it, here’s how I see this ending. (Close your eyes, cuz it ain’t pretty.) Nearing the end of the 3rd quarter, you’ll see Bibby sitting on the bench with a towel draped over head looking like he’s lost his best friend. Joe will be sitting with his hand under his chin wondering what went wrong and we’ll be blogging about how everyone on the team needs to be traded and Mike Woodson needs to be fired. Now, God knows I want us to win, but our track record on the biggest stage is unflattering. Personally, I like watching Boston play when it’s not against us. They show you what ball movement and trust in teammates can do for you. I just want us to go out there and compete for 4 quarters. You may come up short in the end, but at least compete. Who knows…..anything can happen on Friday the 13th. Go Hawks!!

Keys

Cant argue with your first 3 keys. Spot on.

My key,
3pt %
Boston .399 69-173
Atlanta .343 46-144

Pierce 3 pt % 19-36 ,528 This dude is hot. Can JJ shut him down. We lose if we get into a shooting contest.

by RivBoatGambler on Nov 13, 2009 5:57 PM EST reply actions

One more key

Boston averages 26 assists. Atlanta averages 21 assists. We have shown flashes of playing around the 30 assist level in a couple games. We will have to flip flop that disparity to win.

Rondo has 83 assists and 80 shot attempts. Geeeez what a stat.

Zaza

is da man i think we can win this one lets go Hawks

by Erihury on Nov 13, 2009 6:43 PM EST reply actions

All I know is this.

The HAWKS need a signature win in Prime Time against a Top Level team. At some point they need an identity, that the national media can expose to fans league wide. This in turn should inspire the team to bring it’s A game every night, because it’s expected by the opponents. "Confidence is built on the fears of your opponent."

I gotta miss the game tonight.

Have a young lady to entertain with food and mass amounts of booze. I’ll miss you guys. If I can get in front of a TV, i’ll try to chip in where I can. Young tail wins out over early regular season.

Definitely make it up tomorrow. GO HAWKS BABY!!!

by Duff_Man on Nov 13, 2009 7:18 PM EST reply actions

I'll be out of the thread also

Going to record it and watch it on playback with the wife. Last I checked the line was 9.5 Boston, so I’m picking the Hawks to win by 5. Have fun guys!

Corey Zickefoose: I think they should still be able to play football, regardless. Tennessee is my place. You know, it's my football team.

Reporter: Even after they put a gun in your face, you say let them play football?

Corey Zickefoose: Yeah. It's Tennessee. That's the way it is sometimes.

Welcome to the SEC!

I don't expect a Hawks W in Boston but

I do expect the Hawks to come out sharp& agressive and to get physical and dish out some hard fouls against the C’s. Especially Rondo. Let the Celts and the league know it’s a Big 4 in the East.

by xavip on Nov 13, 2009 7:25 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Im loving our young legs right now

But JJ and crawford need to be in sync and we have to play some lockdown defense. If we start doing like we did in the first half of the last game, we will get buried early. Dont want to be catchin up too much.

Im still buggin on the t on al in one of the last games..

The fox in the henhouse.

Hello there Hawk fans.

Just a friendly visit by this here lost fox. I wanted to wish you good luck in the coming game. For some reason, I quite like your young team. We Celtics have a healthy hate for you lot as well, after that long long first round in the playoffs a while ago.

But the fact of the matter is, it’s a healthy hate based on respect for your crew.

I could throw in some personal touches, like how I like Bibby, Jsmooth etc, but let’s keep one thing clear.

Us Celtics are going to win ;)

Have fun tonight peeps.

Not such a young team anymore

Top offseason additions: Jamal Crawford, Joe Smith, Jason Collins. JJ is closing in on thirty, and Bibby is on the wrong side of it.

Tonight’s game-ie, a road game against a top opponent-should start to give us an idea about what to expect from the Hawks. The real question is whether this game is closer, or if the Hawks look like the team that was no match against Cleveland last year.

by Bronn on Nov 13, 2009 7:55 PM EST up reply actions

True that.

Which is why I look forward to the game, Bronn.

See, I like basketball, and honestly, I do like the Hawks. That’s why I want to see how this matchup goes.

Kiorrik - welcome to the blog

Your team should win. Ya’ll are top 2-3 teams in the NBA. Hawks are maybe only one of a handfull of teams that can match up. We will see. We are improved but your Celtics play great ball. No hate here, only respect. If we pull it out i hope you agree.

by RivBoatGambler on Nov 13, 2009 7:55 PM EST reply actions

Should maybe, but...

… this is the NBA ;) Stranger things have happened! We’ll see in a bit. I promise you I’ll hop by to congratulate you, should you guys win ;)

Givens:

Josh Smith will get a technical
Bibby will get repeatedly beat by Rando off the dribble
JJ goes on tirade @ halftime. Swears on his life the team is selfish.(JJ the only player in the 1st half to touch the ball)
Marvin goes missing in action.
Jamal blows hot air into both hands, chafes together, repeat
Teague meets future self in Rondo, which breaks the time & space continuum

Omg. these refs. the beans are just pressing and the refs are giving them calls

As I told the guys on the Celtics message board:

Stop whining about the refs. They’re bad all around. Blaming the refs makes you look bad tbh.

My vote for Game Thread Comment

Doc Rivers: “They just have better athletes.”

Yet another example that the ISO-Joe needs to be put to bed.

Also part II

How many more times do we have to watch Pierce walk off with fake injuries? I’m sorry, but the knee is probably the most used joint in sports, but in basketball even more so because of the massive amount of jumping and landing. I don’t understand how his seem to be so damned resilient.

Agreed

But Wade’s constant posturing and taunting is getting old quick. His purposefully turned around to “step over” Verajeo after that dunk, flexing like some backyard scrub.

Like Hubie said when our bigs learn how

to cut to the basket when JJ has the ball the offense will be pretty good. I do think JC’s overall effect on JJ will show him to look for other players in isolation situations.

by xavip on Nov 13, 2009 10:28 PM EST reply actions

Agreed, but

JJ has to learn to stop dribbling for 10-15 seconds at a time.

Yet another bad possession by JJ

I dont think they had a defender within 6 feet of any player other than JJ and he still dribbled down the shot clock to make a bad contested shot.

I'm not certain the better team didn't win.....

…and if you think the C’s looked tired and lethargic tonight, wait until you see them in 5 months.

Hell to the yeah baby!!!!

Blazer fan here y’all. Love this Atlanta team. Great win for you guys. Our loss to you guys hurts way less after you just toasted Boston on their home floor! Eastern Conference finals baby! Book it.

Probably. I pencilled that as a loss before this trip started.

we’re feeling it this road trip though. We’re 3-0 so far. Grinding out wins. We have a new 3 guard line-up that’s playing pretty well and lets Andre set up the offense. I REALLY don’t think it will last until Monday though. no way we try to check 6’7" johnson with a PG.

I love how they kept bringing up the fact that we had lost to them seven straight times in the regular season, but neglected to mention the very small average margin of victory.

My last wish for this weekend

is that the Hawks don’t come out lethargic against the Hornets tomorrow. Let’s hope Chris Paul is out with that ankle injury. Mommy is proud of her Hawks!!!!

Great win

What might be the most important but most understated point of this win, is not only does it go a long way toward establishing this team as a legit contender in the East, but it also goes a long way towards the overall confidence of this team for the long haul.

The times, they are a’changing.
