Hawks Injury Report: None.
Lakers Injury Report: Pau Gasol is out.
Blogging With the Enemy: Silver Screen and Roll
Predicted bane of the Hawks existence: Ron Artest. There was a game two or so years ago when Artest was in Sacramento. He owned us, went to the free throw line about 100 times. Now, Ron desperately wants a breakout game. Be afraid, be very afraid.
Game Preview:
I have long thought, as long as Gasol or Andrew Bynum were out of the game, the Hawks actually matched up very well with the Lakers. And for at least the last four or five games, it seems one of those guys has always been out, and the Hawks have played well. Derek Fisher did not exploit Mike Bibby's defensive issues. Pre last year's tough guy Pau from the final, Horford always found great success banging inside. Joe Johnson seemed to rise to the occasion of playing against Kobe. The Lakers were always the better team, but the games were close. The past two years, the Hawks even grabbed a win each season.
While I am not a fan of the Ariza for Artest switch off, I do think it helps this match-up for the Lakers. Artest can give Kobe some reprieve against guarding Joe. All the quickness issues Ron now has guarding twos are not there because Joe drives to the basket slower than most people sleep walk. And guarding Artest, if he chooses to run his offense in the post, is going to be exceedingly challenging. Ron has lots of tricks and moves that I can see Marvin and Josh falling for straight to five fouls and 28 minute days.
5 Keys to the game:
- Hawks shoot more free throws. Atlanta has to be the more aggressive team. Period.
- Mike Bibby breaks out. He hates the Lakers. Might as well show it with a good game.
- No Black Mamba. I am fine with Kobe Bryant going for 28. Just not 40. Most people say that they are fine with a team's best player getting his and they will shut down the other guy. Kobe is not one of those guys. He will beat you by himself.
- Ball movement. The Hawks will probably go down big at some point this game. Just like first two, they cannot panic and deteriorate to out athleting the other guy in one on one basketball. If the team plays within themselves, they should have a chance to win in the fourth quarter. That is refreshing to write and mean it.
- Zaza gives his best minutes of this short season. We need his rebounds and we need his defensive annoyance focused squarely at Andrew Bynum.
The Lakers have clearly not come together yet as a team. When they do, they will be a top four team. Here is hoping the chemistry stays away for at least one more day.
See you in the game thread until I fall asleep on my couch.
Go Hawks!

Not a good test for first road game
Lakers coming off a loss at home=an uphill climb for our beloved Hawks. I totally agree with the Hawks playing within their games. They don’t need to try to hit a homerun. When the Lakers make a run, they need to stay level headed and play their game. With the time change, let’s just hope I can stay awake long enough to witness. Go Hawks!!

question, who would you rather have right now
on a three year contract, Pau Gasol or Andrew Bynum?
by hawksdawgs on Nov 1, 2009 9:11 PM EST reply actions 1 recs
Pau...
I’m not sure if Bynum is ever gonna put it all together. Maybe for a season or two, but not over the long haul.

It’s the lack of decent depth for the Lakers.

nique really likes joe, bibby, and crawford on the floor
because he hates perimeter defense?
by hawksdawgs on Nov 1, 2009 10:37 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Bibby on the line. Nice stack formation!
FUNDAMENTALS.

derek fisher has a headache this big
and it has excederin written all over it
by jeherv on Nov 1, 2009 10:38 PM EST reply actions 1 recs
I don't know what that play was
It looked like a JJ iso, only people were running all over the place, and JJ didn’t try to score out of it.
by Bronn on Nov 1, 2009 10:40 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
it's not taking out david beckham
but it’s a hell of shot, al.
by jeherv on Nov 1, 2009 10:40 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
that is at least the 5th
tap for control that has gone right back to the lakers.
by hawksdawgs on Nov 1, 2009 10:40 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
ugh come on i blame Woody for his crappy
subs
by Erihury on Nov 1, 2009 10:41 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I think we need to see some Al and Zaza in the 2nd half
by marvin's ladies of the night on Nov 1, 2009 10:42 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
we are not getting that this year
with joe smith.
and it is bumming me out.
by hawksdawgs on Nov 1, 2009 10:42 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
that was the a horrible pass
i obviously blame kloe.
by hawksdawgs on Nov 1, 2009 10:42 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
as i said earlier
Woody and his crappy subs
by Erihury on Nov 1, 2009 10:43 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
but he had two fouls...
this book I got says he’s supposed to sit when he has two fouls in the first quarter.
by Mr. Sanchez on Nov 1, 2009 10:44 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Bad ending to the half
I blame Woodson
by coachkcastellon on Nov 1, 2009 10:43 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
remember when joe could not miss
that was awesome. i guess mo evan’s dad complained about his minutes at the team party.
by hawksdawgs on Nov 1, 2009 10:45 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Why is the defense so bad?
I’ve watched maybe 2 decent defensive quarters this season…I hope this doesn’t become a theme throughout the season.
by dmortone on Nov 1, 2009 10:45 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
lots of possessions
i will say without looking.
too many turnovers and second chance points.
by hawksdawgs on Nov 1, 2009 10:45 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
score...
and rebounding seem to be directly related right now.

by Mr. Sanchez on Nov 1, 2009 10:47 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
marvin is above average
although danny granger would beg to differ.
by hawksdawgs on Nov 1, 2009 10:48 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Marvin Williams
But I know what you’re getting at.
Bibby/Jamal/Teague are all pretty bad-and at any point, at least one of them is on the floor.
by Bronn on Nov 1, 2009 10:48 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
And Josh struggles on stronger PFs...
as does Al at times. Zaza isn’t bad, but again not ideal height. Thanks for seeing the point though.
by Mr. Sanchez on Nov 1, 2009 10:51 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Still
Can’t complain about the look-I mean, JJ almost never gets that clear a look at the basket.
by Bronn on Nov 1, 2009 10:45 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
The play was perfect.
Both looks. No coaching blame.
by Duff_Man on Nov 1, 2009 10:46 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Sir dont bring logic and reason into this
it’s always Woodys fault now and forever
by Erihury on Nov 1, 2009 10:48 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Not necessarily the last play
Just the way we were down 2 to down 6
by coachkcastellon on Nov 1, 2009 10:50 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
“in that first quarter, it looked like we were going to have a game for the ages” Hawks studio show. and then woody took joe out. sweet.
by hawksdawgs on Nov 1, 2009 10:48 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
if this team is somehow
middling around or below .500 at the all star break, mid season “spark”. the question is who?
by Mr. Sanchez on Nov 1, 2009 10:49 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
If "if" was a fifth, we'd all be drunk
And I totally am.
by Duff_Man on Nov 1, 2009 10:52 PM EST up reply actions 1 recs

[yes, i’m jealous]

halftime waste of time...
4-3 yankees going into the 8th.
by Mr. Sanchez on Nov 1, 2009 10:58 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
If Woody can ever get Josh to play on the road like he plays at home
I’ll contribute myself to his extension
by dmortone on Nov 1, 2009 10:58 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
We need to become the 1990 Nuggets.
Our D can’t make it happen.

by coachkcastellon on Nov 1, 2009 11:06 PM EST reply actions 0 recs

by Erihury on Nov 1, 2009 11:07 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
We are screwed how did we just let that happen?
Laziness on both ends
by coachkcastellon on Nov 1, 2009 11:08 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Hawks need another way to create shots
JJ is looking at some tough defense and double teams-passing around the perimeter is not getting the job done. Someone needs to work at getting to the hole.
by Bronn on Nov 1, 2009 11:08 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I say keep feeding Al.
The refs may accidentally whistle every once in a while
by coachkcastellon on Nov 1, 2009 11:09 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
We are getting HOSED.
I hate the refs right now. Even the LA fans know it. You can HEAR them groaning for the Hawks’ calls.

Kobe gets touched and a foul WTF

And it’s on offense.
by Bronn on Nov 1, 2009 11:11 PM EST reply actions 0 recs

come on are we playing this bad or is it just the refs
by Erihury on Nov 1, 2009 11:12 PM EST reply actions 0 recs

and they are shooting FTs. Nice work refs, smooth as the b in subtle.

yeah...
that chant won’t get old this year
by Mr. Sanchez on Nov 1, 2009 11:26 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Hmm
‘Nique can’t diagnose the problem.
1) Officiating is questionable at best
2) Hawks seem unprepared for the Lakers to contest possession of the ball
3) Hawks need more looks going toward the basket in general, and specifically from Josh Smith…also Marvin to a lesser extent.
by Bronn on Nov 1, 2009 11:26 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
no offense Duff man...
but when they were handing out religions you musta been out takin a whizz

Um, that was a Simpsons line?...
http://www.snpp.com/episodes/9F01.html
Reverend Lovejoy recites the commandment ``Keep holy the Sabbath day’’,
as Homer buys a crate of Duff and a box of cigars from the Kwik-E-Mart.
Homer notes that Apu isn’t in church, but Apu corrects him: He has a
shrine to Ganeesha in the employee lounge. Homer walks over to the
multi-armed elephant, ``Hey, Ganeesha. Wanna peanut?‘’
Please do not offer my god a peanut.
— Apu, ``Homer the Heretic’’
Homer makes some disparaging remarks regarding Apu’s choice of religion. [see line above except replace Duff man with Apu]
[angrily] Mr. Simpson, please pay for your purchases and get out and
[brightly] come again!
— Apu, ``Homer the Heretic’’

Well, considering the Lakers got like 20 fast break points that quarter
the Hawks actually played good defense to hold them to 34.
That’s about the extent of my ability to praise something.
by Bronn on Nov 1, 2009 11:30 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
i was gonna say before when we were down by 5
at least were not down by 20 well now we are
by Erihury on Nov 1, 2009 11:31 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I think 10 in the third quarter alone
That’s disgusting.
by Bronn on Nov 1, 2009 11:35 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
that 3rd quarter is the ball game
at least Brad Lidge is collapsing I guess (my eyes couldn’t take the ugliness, and ears couldn’t take the “MVP”)

Jeff Teague doing a Mario West impression
In that, he’s doing some cosmetic work on the scoreboard in a big loss to the Lakers.
by Bronn on Nov 1, 2009 11:36 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
lets not get so down guys
its only the 3rd game there is plenty of time for Woody to get fired cuz we all know its always his fault now and forever
by Erihury on Nov 1, 2009 11:37 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
This game epitomeizes the Hawks we know and love
look outstanding and nearly the worst thing ever, in spurts.

by Mr. Sanchez on Nov 1, 2009 11:52 PM EST reply actions 0 recs

but watching it was horrible
by Erihury on Nov 1, 2009 11:54 PM EST reply actions 0 recs

and it wasn’t bad.

This game was a parable for why we haven’t run the offense through the frontcourt. Josh took to many jumpers, Horford looked over-matched, and they made baffling plays in transition (although the backcourt gets their share of the blame for that as well).
by thirdfALCON on Nov 1, 2009 11:58 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
watchin Josh take jumpers
during a pointless game still hurts so can someone tell Josh to STOP doing it

That was horrible.
