Lakers Injury Report: Pau Gasol is out

Blogging With the Enemy: Silver Screen and Roll

Predicted bane of the Hawks existence: Ron Artest. There was a game two or so years ago when Artest was in Sacramento. He owned us, went to the free throw line about 100 times. Now, Ron desperately wants a breakout game. Be afraid, be very afraid.

Game Preview:

I have long thought, as long as Gasol or Andrew Bynum were out of the game, the Hawks actually matched up very well with the Lakers. And for at least the last four or five games, it seems one of those guys has always been out, and the Hawks have played well. Derek Fisher did not exploit Mike Bibby's defensive issues. Pre last year's tough guy Pau from the final, Horford always found great success banging inside. Joe Johnson seemed to rise to the occasion of playing against Kobe. The Lakers were always the better team, but the games were close. The past two years, the Hawks even grabbed a win each season.

While I am not a fan of the Ariza for Artest switch off, I do think it helps this match-up for the Lakers. Artest can give Kobe some reprieve against guarding Joe. All the quickness issues Ron now has guarding twos are not there because Joe drives to the basket slower than most people sleep walk. And guarding Artest, if he chooses to run his offense in the post, is going to be exceedingly challenging. Ron has lots of tricks and moves that I can see Marvin and Josh falling for straight to five fouls and 28 minute days.

5 Keys to the game:

  1. Hawks shoot more free throws. Atlanta has to be the more aggressive team. Period.
  2. Mike Bibby breaks out. He hates the Lakers. Might as well show it with a good game.
  3. No Black Mamba. I am fine with Kobe Bryant going for 28. Just not 40. Most people say that they are fine with a team's best player getting his and they will shut down the other guy. Kobe is not one of those guys. He will beat you by himself.
  4. Ball movement. The Hawks will probably go down big at some point this game. Just like first two, they cannot panic and deteriorate to out athleting the other guy in one on one basketball. If the team plays within themselves, they should have a chance to win in the fourth quarter. That is refreshing to write and mean it.
  5. Zaza gives his best minutes of this short season. We need his rebounds and we need his defensive annoyance focused squarely at Andrew Bynum.

The Lakers have clearly not come together yet as a team. When they do, they will be a top four team. Here is hoping the chemistry stays away for at least one more day.

See you in the game thread until I fall asleep on my couch.

Go Hawks!

i would give it to him in heartbeat with a double double in a win.

Not a good test for first road game

Lakers coming off a loss at home=an uphill climb for our beloved Hawks. I totally agree with the Hawks playing within their games. They don’t need to try to hit a homerun. When the Lakers make a run, they need to stay level headed and play their game. With the time change, let’s just hope I can stay awake long enough to witness. Go Hawks!!

question, who would you rather have right now

on a three year contract, Pau Gasol or Andrew Bynum?

by hawksdawgs on Nov 1, 2009 9:11 PM EST reply actions   1 recs

Pau...

I’m not sure if Bynum is ever gonna put it all together. Maybe for a season or two, but not over the long haul.

by Mr. Sanchez on Nov 1, 2009 9:31 PM EST up reply actions

Pau

Bynum always get hurt or just ends up playing good then getting hurt

And of course, it was two handed.

That was the worst timeout I’d ever seen

by coachkcastellon on Nov 1, 2009 10:09 PM EST up reply actions

It's tough on Woody

When EVERYBODY is horrible except for JJ. Tons of turnovers, poor rebounding, missing shots everywhere.

by Bronn on Nov 1, 2009 10:11 PM EST reply actions

Got to admire tenacity from the Hawks

they’re finding new and innovative ways to turn the ball over, despite all the pressure to take care of it.

by Bronn on Nov 1, 2009 10:13 PM EST reply actions

Ok

JJ was on fire…he’s been sitting now for almost 15 minutes-he could very well be ice cold by the time he gets back on the floor.

by Bronn on Nov 1, 2009 10:14 PM EST reply actions

zaza with the spin move, and of course, he misses but gets the points on a hustle tip.

got to at least play one minute.

Think how lopsided this move will feel after 82 games. It’s the franchises redemption for Steve Smith/Isia.R. Rider

by Mr. Sanchez on Nov 1, 2009 10:21 PM EST up reply actions

i think jamal just

dribbled through a few of his own guys just to up the difficulty level there.

by hawksdawgs on Nov 1, 2009 10:16 PM EST reply actions

Crawford is so nice.

Once he meshes, we will have the best bench in the league.

by Duff_Man on Nov 1, 2009 10:16 PM EST reply actions

looks like he's meshing pretty well...

so far. We were all clicking game one, so he steps in and keeps the ball moving to the open man. We have trouble scoring these last two games, and he comes in making. 6th man?

by Mr. Sanchez on Nov 1, 2009 10:20 PM EST up reply actions

does andrew bynum travel every time he touches it? i don’t blame him for doing it since the refs never call it.

by hawksdawgs on Nov 1, 2009 10:21 PM EST reply actions

One thing is for sure...

we’re hustling and working for glass.

I don't know what that play was

It looked like a JJ iso, only people were running all over the place, and JJ didn’t try to score out of it.

that was awesome. i guess mo evan’s dad complained about his minutes at the team party.

by hawksdawgs on Nov 1, 2009 10:45 PM EST reply actions

Why is the defense so bad?

I’ve watched maybe 2 decent defensive quarters this season…I hope this doesn’t become a theme throughout the season.

by dmortone on Nov 1, 2009 10:45 PM EST reply actions

lots of possessions

too many turnovers and second chance points.

But I know what you’re getting at.

Bibby/Jamal/Teague are all pretty bad-and at any point, at least one of them is on the floor.

by Bronn on Nov 1, 2009 10:48 PM EST up reply actions

And Josh struggles on stronger PFs...

as does Al at times. Zaza isn’t bad, but again not ideal height. Thanks for seeing the point though.

by Mr. Sanchez on Nov 1, 2009 10:51 PM EST up reply actions

Still

Can’t complain about the look-I mean, JJ almost never gets that clear a look at the basket.

by Mr. Sanchez on Nov 1, 2009 11:07 PM EST reply actions

Hawks need another way to create shots

JJ is looking at some tough defense and double teams-passing around the perimeter is not getting the job done. Someone needs to work at getting to the hole.

by Bronn on Nov 1, 2009 11:08 PM EST reply actions

I say keep feeding Al.

The refs may accidentally whistle every once in a while

by coachkcastellon on Nov 1, 2009 11:09 PM EST up reply actions

We are getting HOSED.

I hate the refs right now. Even the LA fans know it. You can HEAR them groaning for the Hawks’ calls.

by Duff_Man on Nov 1, 2009 11:08 PM EST reply actions

WTF

come on are we playing this bad or is it just the refs

by Erihury on Nov 1, 2009 11:12 PM EST reply actions

Refs.

It’s gone all Dick Bavetta.

by Duff_Man on Nov 1, 2009 11:15 PM EST up reply actions

Hmm

‘Nique can’t diagnose the problem.

1) Officiating is questionable at best
2) Hawks seem unprepared for the Lakers to contest possession of the ball
3) Hawks need more looks going toward the basket in general, and specifically from Josh Smith…also Marvin to a lesser extent.

Please do not offer my god a peanut.

This game was a parable for why we haven’t run the offense through the frontcourt. Josh took to many jumpers, Horford looked over-matched, and they made baffling plays in transition (although the backcourt gets their share of the blame for that as well).
