Blogging with the enemy: Third Quarter Collapse

From here on out, the Hawks are on television. Amen and amen. I love you Steve Holman, but that is a good feeling. So far radio has been a doozy to figure out how to DVR.

Tonight's game against the Magic will still be fake, but starter should play more minutes and the quality of the opponent even if it is just 2nd unit vs. 2 unit will be the highest the Hawks have seen so far. Maybe it is the opponent, maybe it is the closeness to the regular season, might just be the tv coverage, but this one just feels a little more real.

Looking forward to the action myself. I will be in out of the game thread and all are welcome. So settle in for a Friday night event (me), make it a pregame activity, or DVR the thing and watch it later, but join us in the game thread for all the pregame, in game, and post game musings.

The season is almost here. Go Hawks!

I'm nervous

I’m nervous about this game for two reasons:
1. We don’t play well on the road.
2. We don’t play well on national tv.

Either way we’re losers in this matchup because if we win, the media will say it’s just a preseason game. If we lose, they’ll say we aren’t ready to stomp with the big dogs. I’m just excited to finally get to see JC in action. I hope he doesn’t disappoint.

by dstdeelite on Oct 23, 2009 7:14 PM EDT reply actions

hawks dont play bad

they just lose.

but i agree. this is a zero win game. but it is preseason so you can’t get too upset. i just want to see jeff teague. espn is espn for a rookie. preseason or not.

by hawksdawgs on Oct 23, 2009 7:36 PM EDT up reply actions

joe smith out tonight

no reason to play meaningless back to back via twitter.

by hawksdawgs on Oct 23, 2009 8:04 PM EDT reply actions

bill simmons nba preview

i usually love the guy, but he once again managed to write 20,000 words on the upcoming nba season while barely mentioning the hawks.

all he really got in there was a small dig on jj and a less than flattering projection for our boys.

by hawksgate on Oct 23, 2009 8:07 PM EDT reply actions

It's the firs ttime I've seen it

So I have to say that I love the Horford beard.

by Bronn on Oct 23, 2009 8:09 PM EDT reply actions

Well, Josh, at least it wasn’t a three.

by Bronn on Oct 23, 2009 8:09 PM EDT reply actions

i like that shot

from hubie brown.

he has already messed up three player names and said he likes a josh smith jump shot.

preseason for all of us.

by hawksdawgs on Oct 23, 2009 8:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Mediot talking point #1

Hawks need a center to move Horford down to the 4.

by Bronn on Oct 23, 2009 8:11 PM EDT reply actions

Horford

Size of a PF, but he really does have a C’s game. It’s just something people who watch a lot of him should know.

by Bronn on Oct 23, 2009 8:13 PM EDT up reply actions

true, but if josh and marvin hit the boards a bit more, it may be an advantage in other aspects to have al at the 5.

by hawksgate on Oct 23, 2009 8:18 PM EDT up reply actions

vince vs. turk

this team will be pretty damn good. as much as vc was a pain in the ass for toronto, and hedo had a great year, carter is still an upgrade for the magic.

by hawksgate on Oct 23, 2009 8:17 PM EDT reply actions

I think it's a "wait and see" situation.

Vince is all flash and no substance. His teammates have historically hated him.

by Duff_Man on Oct 23, 2009 8:18 PM EDT up reply actions

true, but i still cringe thinking about that vc buzzer beater last year.

by hawksgate on Oct 23, 2009 8:19 PM EDT up reply actions

wait and see

let’s pray Josh plays as bad as Vince.

by RivBoatGambler on Oct 23, 2009 8:20 PM EDT reply actions

pachula?

hubie needs to learn how to say zaza’s name

by hawksgate on Oct 23, 2009 8:24 PM EDT reply actions

Haha

Gundy just needs a little more skullett and they would be twins. That is too funny.

by Jesse28 on Oct 26, 2009 7:58 AM EDT up reply actions

…or anyone who runs an offensive play other than “give it to joe and stand around.”

by hawksgate on Oct 23, 2009 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions

23% shooting

that is on open shots. no good.

by hawksdawgs on Oct 23, 2009 8:29 PM EDT reply actions

vince v. jj

contracts aside, who would you rather have?

i’m pretty sure it’s jj, but this may be close if vince actually gets his act together and tries while playing for a conteder.

by hawksgate on Oct 23, 2009 8:31 PM EDT reply actions

JJ. I don't want Vince on my team.

No guys who quit on an entire team and city. I don’t care how many he can score.

by Duff_Man on Oct 23, 2009 8:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Anderson and Carter have accounted for 25 of Orlando’s 33 thus far.

by hawksdawgs on Oct 23, 2009 8:32 PM EDT reply actions

Hawks are playing possum. Not that I have any evidence, at all, for this, but I like pretending that they’re not really playing, as opposed to thinking that Orlando can dominate them so easy.

by Bronn on Oct 23, 2009 8:33 PM EDT up reply actions

preseason – let’s just hope for no injuries.

by hawksgate on Oct 23, 2009 8:35 PM EDT up reply actions

"Vince is smart."

And we know that because he skipped a Toronto playoff game to sit at graduation.

by Duff_Man on Oct 23, 2009 8:38 PM EDT reply actions

don’t want to sound like a vc apologist, but i think he’s gone from wildly overrated to a bit underrated

by hawksgate on Oct 23, 2009 8:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Now I want Zaza to turn around

and drop it into the other hoop from there…like that video below.

by Bronn on Oct 23, 2009 8:41 PM EDT up reply actions

let’s hope the hawks 2008/09 shooting wasn’t a fluke (i think some national writer, maybe hollinger, made that case)

by hawksgate on Oct 23, 2009 8:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Bret, at hoopinion.com, has loudly and repeatedly made that case.

by Bronn on Oct 23, 2009 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions

i buy a few of those

bibby down, mo down, crawford no better, but i think marvin stays the same or up. joe same or up. josh maybe down but less important with less shots taken.

by hawksdawgs on Oct 23, 2009 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Okay, I can see why he said it

But if you force a double team right under the basket, how can it be “too much dribbling” ?

by Bronn on Oct 23, 2009 8:42 PM EDT reply actions

Hawks problems thus far:

2 point FG%
3 point FG%
2 point FG% defense
3 point FG% defense

by Bronn on Oct 23, 2009 8:44 PM EDT reply actions

Actually, here's the list what isn't a problem:

9 free throw attempts.

The rest could use some work.

by Bronn on Oct 23, 2009 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions

yikes, was it 2004 zaza was the starter?

great backup – a problem if he’s going 35 minutes

by hawksgate on Oct 23, 2009 8:47 PM EDT up reply actions

yes, but does he own a restaurant in midtown?

by hawksgate on Oct 23, 2009 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions

for real

gortat needs to check himself.

by hawksdawgs on Oct 23, 2009 8:53 PM EDT up reply actions

gortat

how much $ did he get.

zaza was a deal with about the same skill set (and fun eastern european personality)

by hawksgate on Oct 23, 2009 8:48 PM EDT reply actions

that called “too much”

by hawksgate on Oct 23, 2009 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions

if gortat

could keep his numbers as a starter would have been great. but paying that to backup the best center in the game? ugh.

by hawksdawgs on Oct 23, 2009 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions

0 shotblocking?

horford had a decent number last year.

by hawksdawgs on Oct 23, 2009 8:50 PM EDT reply actions

And Josh Smith

has something of reputation as well.

by Bronn on Oct 23, 2009 8:51 PM EDT up reply actions

has bibby blocked a shot since middle school?

by hawksgate on Oct 23, 2009 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes. He did.

95 to be exact. Up 20 from the previous year.

by Duff_Man on Oct 23, 2009 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Howard backs down, shoves Al out of the way,

lays it in. And yells “AND 1”??

Yeah…can’t wait for those old refs to get back. Geez.

by Duff_Man on Oct 23, 2009 8:55 PM EDT reply actions

Back to the VC bashing

I hate when VC makes a basket and has that dumbass look on his face. Almost like “Am I awesome or what?”

by dstdeelite on Oct 23, 2009 8:55 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

bibby was just guarding howard

for more than one second. i swear i saw it.

by hawksdawgs on Oct 23, 2009 8:56 PM EDT reply actions

smoove

want to see more of that

by hawksgate on Oct 23, 2009 8:57 PM EDT reply actions

he takes too much heat for being an a-hole…in his interviews he is pretty personable

by hawksgate on Oct 23, 2009 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Don't think that's quite accurate

It’s his immaturity that we dislike, and largely in his on-court demeanor and his style of play.

I’ve always been impressed in his interviews by just how intelligent he is, and his ability to communicate what he knows. But actually following through with his comments would also help a great deal.

But in a lot of ways, he’s impressively intelligent for a man who skipped college.

by Bronn on Oct 23, 2009 9:03 PM EDT up reply actions

i just think a lot of the national nba media/fans unfairly think of him.

i loved his interview with nbatv.

by hawksgate on Oct 23, 2009 9:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Randolph Morris was on the bench for that AAU team

And that, my friends, is when something went horribly, inexplicably, wrong…

by Bronn on Oct 23, 2009 8:58 PM EDT reply actions

randolph morris

is the mike williams/maurice clarret of the nba.

went pro then went back to college. never good.

by hawksdawgs on Oct 23, 2009 8:59 PM EDT up reply actions

randolph morris and talent

did i just here those inthe same sentence?

aside from height, that is.

by hawksgate on Oct 23, 2009 8:58 PM EDT reply actions

does this game seem frenzied to anyone else? i feel like there are not even any half court sets.

by hawksdawgs on Oct 23, 2009 9:00 PM EDT reply actions

umm, woddy is stil the coach, right. we don’t do half court sets

by hawksgate on Oct 23, 2009 9:01 PM EDT up reply actions

but there arent even any joe isos.

by hawksdawgs on Oct 23, 2009 9:01 PM EDT up reply actions

josh at the line

this is bad – how does he seem to get worse? that’s not supposed to happen

by hawksgate on Oct 23, 2009 9:03 PM EDT reply actions

Lack of practice.

He should be shooting thousands of FTs every day. I am 100% sure he doesn’t.

by Duff_Man on Oct 23, 2009 9:04 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m bothered by the fact that JJ doesn’t seem to anticipate the double EVERY time he catches it.

You’d think we’d actually have an advantage in those situations since we’re a perimeter oriented team, but it’s not turned out so well.

by Bronn on Oct 23, 2009 9:05 PM EDT reply actions

Wow

I’m actually impressed by the form on that last Josh Smith jumper. But still, in principle, no.

by Bronn on Oct 23, 2009 9:06 PM EDT reply actions

no thinking

is it really no thinking with Josh? maybe Zaza should run at Josh on offense.

by hawksdawgs on Oct 23, 2009 9:07 PM EDT up reply actions

No thinking.

That sums up Smith’s whole game a lot of nights.

by Duff_Man on Oct 23, 2009 9:09 PM EDT up reply actions

as soon as hawk passes to him in jump shooting position

they should run at him to keep the thinking to a minimum.

by hawksdawgs on Oct 23, 2009 9:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Josh seems like a pretty good guy

Bronn, just to be clear, I don’t think smoove is an a-hole (in fact, quite the opposite)

i’m just pretty sure most nba fans who don’t really follow the hawks like we do, think he is a petulant dick. i suppose he does act that way on the court sometimes, but he also know how to give an interview and is probably a pretty good guy.

did you see that adidas spot?

by hawksgate on Oct 23, 2009 9:13 PM EDT reply actions

I will say this.

I have seen Smith (on a few occasions) absolutely quit when he wasn’t getting his way in a game.

by Duff_Man on Oct 23, 2009 9:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm just not sure if that's really how he's seen nationally

I’ve never really heard anyone say anything bad about him. Most of his harshest critics are Hawks fans, and most of us know enough to realize that he’s a good kid.

by Bronn on Oct 23, 2009 9:23 PM EDT up reply actions

By bad

I mean, that he’s a bad person. There’s the continuing perception of a rift between him and Woodson…but nobody is saying he’s uncoachable or a jerk.

by Bronn on Oct 23, 2009 9:24 PM EDT up reply actions

i agree. but i’m still convinced (from reading guys on espn, si, foxsports, and others including my dad up in ct), that he has a bad reputation.

he may not be a steve nash, but he isn’t marbury either.

by hawksgate on Oct 23, 2009 9:27 PM EDT up reply actions

hubie brown is an idiot

the hawks are playing bad and the magic cant miss from outside. that is all.

by hawksdawgs on Oct 23, 2009 9:31 PM EDT reply actions

and i just got mad

this is becoming bad coaching.

by hawksdawgs on Oct 23, 2009 9:34 PM EDT reply actions

Hubie Brown

Likes that they isolated Joe Johnson.

He should really watch some more of this team.

by Bronn on Oct 23, 2009 9:38 PM EDT reply actions

I'm also certain

Hubie Brown can’t pronounce Pachulia.

by Bronn on Oct 23, 2009 9:41 PM EDT up reply actions

bibby against the nelson

might be one of his worst match ups. dude can drive and hit the three.

by hawksdawgs on Oct 23, 2009 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions

we need the sharp-shooter…a perfect transition to the teague era (i hope)

by hawksgate on Oct 23, 2009 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah, it’s probably time to give up on this one and wait for the regular season.

too bad the hawks meet/greet is on a sunday this year (last year’s thing at edgewood was pretty fun)

by hawksgate on Oct 23, 2009 9:56 PM EDT up reply actions

i hate to hear that.

we need more depth in the fontcourt (i love joe, but collins is pretty worthless)

by hawksgate on Oct 23, 2009 10:13 PM EDT up reply actions
