marvin a "streaky shooting" guy?

as someone who as watched almost all of marvin's games, i wonder about this.  here is a piece of charley rosen's post on foxsports.com...

"The hopeful recovery of streaky-shooting Marvin Williams, who just might be the best athlete on the team."

i usually like rosen, but his take on this makes me think he may not have watched too many hawks games.  marvin is a lot of things (both good and bad), but "streaky" is not something that comes to mind.

the guy can shoot, the guy can finish, and also play strong perimeter d, but he often seems to do this while playing large chuncks of minutes where we wonder whether or not he is actually on the floor.  for all his faults, marvin may just be the most consistent player on the team.

and though he may be a great athlete, josh is by far the best athlete on the team.

i just can't remember any real "streaks" from marvin.  thoughts gentlemen?

not streaky in my book

he just randomly shoots 18 shots every so often. i guess that is streaky in its own way.

The way people use the word athlete

really differs from person to person. There’s different athletic abilities that don’t always correlate, so two guys can be talking about how athletic a player is and not at all mean the same thing.

In terms of overall combination of strength, speed, size, and jumping ability, Josh Smith is clearly the best overall athlete. But if you limit that to more specifically speed, lateral quickness, and body control, then you could say that Marvin is more athletic.

The word “athletic” is so overused now that it doesn’t have a defined meaning. We used to know that it referred to a guy who had all the physical traits-speed, strength, stamina, vertical leap, and quickness, but now you hear it used more and more on guys like Jeff Teague, who are slight but quick.

My definition for althletic has always been the ability to be good at other sports. For instance John Smoltz is great at basketball, golf, football, rock-paper-scissors, tiddly-winks, whatever you name it and he can beat you in it.

I've always been different...

being good at golf, not so much. Being good in the decathlon, that’s where I’d say you’re an athlete. Can ya run the high hurdles under 14 seconds, throw a 15 pound ball 40 feet, and high jump 5?

I agree Bronn

People do use the word “athletic” in various ways. IMO, I think he means streaky by how when Marvin gets hot, he can light it up from anywhere (as he has improved is 3 ball last year). He started the season on fire, but once he get’s cold, he gets REALLY cold, not being able to hit much of anything. Marvin does play pretty consistent, but once he gets hot, or becomes streaky, it’s hard to stop……just my two cents :-)

The term "athlete"

This term has typically been used in all sports to refer to a player that has many physical skills that allow them to play many multiple positions well, but none of them singularly excellent. In football, this term has been used to describe players who could play in most skill positions (i.e. WR, RB, or QB), but probably couldn’t play one of them at an elite level.

Teague has been labeled a combo gaurd, having physical abilities to play the two and skills to play the one. Scouts will call him an “athlete” since it wouldn’t be a forgone conclusion that he would play one over the other.

Marv can be...

Marvin is streaky in a way that sometimes he steps up and has 18- 20 point game and sometimes he dsnt and has a 0-9 point game
but Marv is always there on defense and steps up wen needed like those back to back road gams that jj was missing.

Yeah this. The only streaky thing about Marvin is whether he comes to play or not on offense.

well......

His shot didn’t get any range until last season
He doesn’tt finish strong around the rim….not a lot of AND 1’s
But he can score the basketball when he gets aggressive

If not,

we can rely on the rest of the team to carry us throughout the playoffsif we make it

Y'all don't know what 'streaky' means???

They said the same thing about Bibby’s game when we got him at the deadline a couple years ago. They’re also saying the same things about J Craw’s game. All those players have the same thing in common. One night, they’ll get you 30+ points in a game and the next night or two, they won’t even break the double digit mark. They’ll shoot you into a game or they’ll take you right out of it. No consistency.

On another note, I’m giving Marvin until the end of the season before I’m packing my things and hopping right off of his bandwagon. Even a dog gets tired of waiting……

He's not showing up like he should

in the Lakers game last night he was a no show….what’s up with him…this is the year…no excuses…and a big game like that I would have like to see 17+pts, 5+rebs, 3 ast, and technical foul or some attitude
